    Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Man, just realized that loss to the Saints deflated my fan support a little bit.

I know the Rams coming to town will draw fans, but I'm also thinking of upping the advertising and making it a Fan Appreciation Day. Don't F.A.D's bring in more fans? I want to finally have a sellout crowd, especially for a big game like this.

Week 14: St. Louis (8-4) at San Francisco (10-2)
This amazing late-season matchup was even better for the fans as the Niners organization held a Fan Appreciation Day with many fans receiving a complimentary NFL football. Then they got to stay and see an entertaining division rivalry game.

            1st Quarter
San Francisco received the ball first but a stingy Rams defense forced a punt. One play later, Isaac Bruce was burning the secondary for a 74-yard score. That would not be the only noise he made, but it definitely shut the crowd up as the 49ers found themselves quickly in a 7-0 deficit. They responded with a 3-play drive of their own. The third play, St. Louis brought a few blitzers and Garcia let go of the ball just in time. The ball found it's mark-- Cedrick Wilson, who caught it in the middle of the field and was gone for a 53-yard score to tie it at 7. This caused the fans to go nuts. The Niners forced St. Louis to punt, which was bad news for the Rams as their punter got a bad foot on it and it went out of bounds at the St. Louis 30!! San Francisco was only able to muster a 29-yard field goal from Chandler, but it did give them a 10-7 lead. With thirty seconds left in the quarter, Tony Parrish picked off pass-happy Kurt Warner and blazed downfield 42-yards to paydirt to make it 17-7.

            2nd Quarter
Things would calm down a little bit in this quarter. The Rams drove into Niner territory but were held to a 49-yard field goal from Jeff Wilkins. After punt, the Niner D came up big again. Boulware intercepted the ball at the Rams 16 yard line. This led to another Chandler field goal which made it 20-10. The half was obviously not over, as Warner demonstrated. He led the Rams to consecutive first downs before hitting Bruce once more, this time for a 45-yarder. This made it 20-17 at the half.

            3rd Quarter
The Rams again made it into San Francisco territory but once more were held to a field goal by Wilkins. This tied it all up at 20. This particular drive was costly for the San Francisco defense. CB Ahmed Plummer went down to a broken collarbone. He is expected to miss at least five weeks, which could spell the end to his season. The 49ers knew they needed to answer the previous 10 points by St. Louis and they did with a consistent, 7-minute drive that ended with Garcia rocketing the ball to Freeman from 4 yards away. Just as the quarter expired, CB Jimmy Williams intercepted Warner at the St. Louis 33.

            4th Quarter
This turnover led to more than a field goal, as San Francisco was quickly positioned once more at the 4 yard line. Garcia hit Beasley in the flats and Fred busted through a couple of tackles on his way to the endzone. This gave the Niners a 34-20 cushion. That cushion was quickly taken away as Warner once more found Bruce torching the secondary to the tune of 79 yards. At 34-27, the pressure was back on. The offense of SF would have to punt it away following a couple of sacks. Kurt Warner quickly ended the hopes of Rams fans as he tossed his fourth interception into triple coverage. It was caught by Zack Bronson, who made it to the St. Louis 21 before being brought down. Barlow's 3 yard run for the score sealed the game at 41-27 with just over three minutes to play.

            Final: SF gets revenge 41-27!

            Player of the Game
            QB Jeff Garcia - 102.6, 20/34, 281 yards, 3 TD, INT

            Key Performances
RB Kevan Barlow - 18 att, 73 yards, TD
WR Cedrick Wilson - 2 rec, 76 yards, TD
WR Terrell Owens - 4 rec, 80 yards

            San Francisco 49ers: 11-2

Next Game: @ Tampa Bay (7-6)

Straight From the Coach- On the loss of Ahmed Plummer
"It definitely hurts this incredible defense. He was a key part of the reason why this defense has been so good this season. We will miss him on the field, but we've got to find a way to move on. The playoffs are coming, and we've got to figure out what we're going to do."

Week 15: San Francisco (11-2) at Tampa Bay (7-6)
Chris Simms was starting in place of an injured Brad Johnson, which only seemed to boost Tampa's offensive production.

                        1st Quarter
The 49ers got the ball first and on the kickoff, Jimmy Williams got his first ever kickoff return for a touchdown, flying downfield 97 yards to give SF a quick 7-0 advantage. Tampa took the ball and got within the 5, but in the end would have to rely on Gramatica booting in a field goal of 20 yards. Just before the quarter ended, Simms hit Keyshawn Johnson for a 43-yard score to put Tampa Bay on top 10-7 heading into the second quarter.

                        2nd Quarter
Early on Tampa added another field goal making it 13-7. Finally the 49ers put together a successful drive as all their others had been 3 and out or at least very short. This drive ended when Beasley smashed his way into the endzone from the 2. Taking the lead 14-13, the Niners got pumped. After forcing a fumble, Garcia found Owens from 24 yards away. Chris Simms then threw an interception to Jimmy Williams but on the return, he fumbled and TB's rookie WR Deion Williams recovered it and ran it in for the touchdown. After the two-point conversion failed, the score was 21-19 at the half.

                        3rd Quarter
Early on Chandler added a 27-yard field goal to increase the lead to 5 points. Simms fumbled at the Bucs' 11 on the following drive and one play later, Garcia again hooked up with Owens to make it 31-19.

                        4th Quarter
Keyshawn Johnson found himself on the receiving end of another touchdown pass, this one of 33-yards. The Bucs defense forced a punt. The Niners defense responded in kind. However, Jimmy Williams returned the punt about twenty yards and then fumbled the ball away at the 46 of SF. Three plays later, from the 24-yard line, Chris Simms hit rookie WR Adam Robinson. This time they made a two point conversion and the Bucs took a 34-31 lead with 1:40 left to play. On the first drive, Garcia hooked up with Cedrick Wilson for a 58-yard pass that set up a 46-yard field goal by Chandler to tie the game at 34 as time expired.

                        Overtime
The Buccaneers won the toss, but their offense faltered and had to punt the ball away. San Francisco made it downfield quickly and ended the game with a 31-yard field.

FINAL: SF comes out of Tampa with nice 37-34 win!

                        Player of the Game
                        QB Jeff Garcia - 91.8, 17/30, 246 yards, 2 TD, INT

                        Key Performances
RB Kevan Barlow - 19 att, 83 yards
WR Terrell Owens - 6 rec, 69 yards, 2 TD

                        San Francisco 49ers: 12-2

                        49ers have clinched the West!
