    Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 7: Rams (4-1) at San Francisco (6-0)
This heated rivalry called for something special. That something was Fan Appreciation Day, as most fans received complimentary miniature NFL helmets.

    1st Quarter
On the opening drive, San Francisco managed to draw first blood after FB Phillip Crosby trucked into the endzone from two yards away. The Rams offense started off stagnant and they were unable to put any points on the board in the first quarter. A 38-yard field goal from Chandler made it 10-0.

    2nd Quarter
Kurt Warner dropped back and threw a pass to Bruce... but he did not see CB Drew Jones who intercepted the ball and returned it to the St. Louis 5 yard line. This set up a 5-yard run by Kevan Barlow and the Niners had a 17-0 lead. The Rams made it to the 49ers 36, but a 53-yard attempt by Jeff Wilkins came up just short. Likewise, when Chandler attempted one from 51 yards, he too came up short.

    3rd Quarter
The Rams finally got onto the board on their opening drive of the new half after Marshall Faulk ran in from the 8 yard line to end a nice, 9-play drive. The wind was taken directly out of St. Louis' sails on the kickoff, however, when Drew Jones returned it 87 yards for the touchdown. Later, a 39-yard Wilkins field goal made it 24-10.

    4th Quarter
Warner was going back to pass from LE Andrew Williams hit his arm, causing a fumble. The ball bounced back to the Rams 5 before being scooped up by Andre Carter and taken in to add to the Niners lead and make it 31-10. St. Louis' passing game quickly got them within San Francisco's 5. On 4th & Goal from the 6, Faulk made a reception and was ruled in for the TD! But a challenge from Dennis Erickson allowed the refs to take another look and they determined Faulk was down at the inch line. This kept the score at 31-10. That is, until the Rams next drive when Kurt Warner found WR Shaun McDonald for an 11-yard score but at 31-17, the game was already over.

FINAL: San Francisco defeats St. Louis 31-17!

    Player of the Game
CB Drew Jones - 3 tackles, INT, KR TD

    Key Performances
    QB Seneca Wallace - 83.1, 17/27, 185 yards
RB Kevan Barlow - 23 att, 56 yards, TD

    San Francisco: 7-0

      Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 8: Washington (1-6) at San Francisco (7-0) Monday Night Football
A 1-6 team vs a 7-0 team on National TV? No way the 49ers would be embarassed in this one... right? Either way, an injured Patrick Ramsey meant that back-up QB Brian St. Pierre got the nod.

      1st Quarter
On Washington's opening drive, the 49ers forced a three and out. San Francisco got into a goaline situation and on 4th & Goal from the 1, Erickson gambled and gave the ball to Barlow. That's the thing about gambling... you're bound to lose sometime, and sure enough Barlow was stuffed on the down, giving the Redskins the ball and some serious momentum. St. Pierre dropped back three plays later and found WR Taylor Jacobs behind Ahmed Plummer who was going for the INT and Jacobs was gone for the 68-yard score.

      2nd Quarter
A 50-yard field goal from John Hall made it 10-0 Redskins. San Francisco managed some points when Barlow found the endzone from 7 yards out, capping a 10-play drive. After stopping Washington, the 49ers got the ball in position for a 22-yard field goal from Chandler and it was 10-10 at the half.

      3rd Quarter
There was a lot of defense in this quarter. The only time either team made it past the other's 35 was when Washington got to the 7 to allow for a 24-yard field goal from John Hall as the Redskins regained the lead.

      4th Quarter
Down 13-10, Seneca Wallace led the Niners down the field. They look poised to score from the 6 but Wallace's pass was a tad bit off, and Fred Smoot snatched the ball and took off. Smoot ran 101 yards on his way to a touchdown to help give the Skins a 20-10 lead. With five minutes left, Wallace did it the right way, hitting Randle El on a three yard out to cut the lead to 20-17. St. Pierre answered with a short toss to Rod Gardner. Down 27-17, the 49ers had 2:30 to mount a comeback. Wallace again led them down the field but was once more picked off, this time at the Washington 6. San Francisco got the ball back and Jones returned it to the 30. On the next play, Wallace connected with rookie WR Donald Evans for a 30-yard touchdown and it was 27-24 with 38 seconds left. The momentum died for one final time when the onside kick attempt was unsuccessful.

FINAL: San Francisco embarassed on National TV 27-24!

      Key Performances
      QB Seneca Wallace - 85.5, 27/44, 381 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
RB Kevan Barlow - 20 att, 65 yards, TD
WR (R) Donald Evans - 4 rec, 113 yards, TD
WR Terrell Owens - 9 rec, 98 yards

      San Francisco 49ers: 7-1

Next Game: @ Green Bay (4-4) [Week 10]

Week 10: San Francisco (7-1) at Green Bay (4-4)
Needless to say San Francisco was upset after their loss to the then 1-6 Redskins on Monday Night Football. Would they take it out on the Pack? Well... let's just say CB Drew Jones got his first career taste of Green Bay and wanted seconds.

            1st Quarter
On the opening drive of the game, Green Bay was forced to punt. Jones made his name known to the fans of the Packers with a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown to put San Francisco on top 7-0. Around the middle of the quarter, a 43-yard field goal was attempted by Jeff Chandler but he hooked the kick to the right. No problem... as Brett Favre dropped back to pass, Drew Jones knew where it was going and stepped in front. After intercepting the ball, he had wide open field and returned it all 47-yards as San Francisco now had a 14-0 lead. 14 points... all scored by CB Drew Jones.

            2nd Quarter
The defense of Green Bay buckled down in this quarter, holding San Francisco at bay for the most part. However, with no offense, the Packers were still behind 14 points as they were getting ready to head into the half. The 49ers had the ball at their own 39 yard line and there were just a few seconds left on the clock, so Erickson told Wallace to launch one. He did, and his target? WR Donald Evans, who caught the ball on a deep slant and was gone 67 yards to give the 49ers a 21-0 lead with 0:00 left on the clock!

            3rd Quarter
Green Bay's offense was still nowhere to be found. Barlow added a 4-yard run, however, giving the Niners plenty of breathing room.

            4th Quarter
Barlow added another 2-yard run and the Niners found themselves on top 35-0. With five minutes left, Favre was knocked out of the game with turf toe. His backup, Jeff Garrett, came in and led the Pack down the field before handing Ahman Green the ball from the 3 yard line.

FINAL: San Francisco stomps Green Bay 35-7!

            Player of the Game
CB Drew Jones - 5 tackles, 4 pass def, INT. def TD, PR TD

            Key Performances
QB Seneca Wallace - 82.8, 19/30, 221 yards, TD, INT

WR (R) Donald Evans - 2 rec, 67 yards, TD

Week 12: San Francisco (9-1) at Minnesota (5-5)

                  1st Quarter
Minnesota was forced to punt on the game's first drive. San Francisco's offense could do no better and also were forced to punt. The Vikings returner had problems catching the ball, however, and the 49ers recovered at the Minnesota 18. Seneca Wallace then threw an interception at the Vikings 10 two plays later. The play after that? 40 yard pass to Randy Moss, but Parrish knocked it loose and Julian Peterson recovered it at midfield. The 49ers still could not make anything of it and had to punt it back. Three plays later, Vikings QB Luther Blount was intercepted at the 31 by Tony Parrish who decided to generate the points himself, running it into the endzone.

                  2nd Quarter
In this quarter, Wallace threw two more interceptions but Minnesota was still unable to get anything going. On the next drive, Wallace hit Lloyd on a short out route and Lloyd took off around the corner for a 49-yard touchdown. Minnesota's kicker Preston made it 14-3 with a 32-yard field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, however, Donald Evans took it 99 yards and to the house as the Niners grabbed a 21-3 lead going into the half.

                  3rd Quarter
San Francisco added 10 points in this quarter off a 2-yard Barlow run and a 34-yard Chandler field goal. Minnesota's offensives woes persisted.

                  4th Quarter
Barlow got knocked out early in the quarter with a strained back. After forcing a punt from the Vikings, Jones fumbled the return and the Vikings picked it up and ran it in making the score 31-10. Another 30-yard field goal from Chandler made it 34-10, however.

Final: San Francisco beats Minnesota 34-10!

Week 13: San Diego (10-1) at San Francisco (10-1)
Drew Brees was out with a concussion, so backup Alfonzo Anderson was called in to take the reins.

                        1st Quarter
On the first drive of the game, San Francisco scored 3 points after Jeff Chandler nailed a 50-yard field goal attempt. These were the only points by either team in the quarter.

                        2nd Quarter
Early in the quarter, Wallace hit Randle El for an 8-yard score. San Diego QB Anderson led the Chargers down the field but was intercepted by Parrish in the endzone. But wait! FLAG on the play... Ahmed Plummer was called for pass interference on the play, giving the Chargers the ball at the 1 and setting up Anderson's pass to TE Justin Peelle on 3rd & goal from the 1. After San Diego got the ball back, they handed off to LaDanian Tomlinson, but Tomlinson fumbled at the 45 of SF and Bronson took the ball and ran 55 yards to paydirt, giving the Niners a 17-7 lead. It became 17-14 after Anderson found David Boston for the 17-yard strike. In the first half, Kevan Barlow was held to 13 yards on 8 attempts.

                        3rd Quarter
Barlow contributed to the scoreboard with a 4-yard run. San Diego's Steve Christie tried to contribute, but knocked a 48-yard field goal attempt wide of the goalposts.

                        4th Quarter
Tomlinson helped the Chargers with a 4-yard score of his own to make it 24-21 in the Niners favor. But all of San Diego's hopes were destroyed by a short toss to Brandon Lloyd from Seneca Wallace for the touchdown as San Francisco held onto a 31-21 lead for the remainder of the game.
