Illinois shows Michigan how it's done with second half explosion

Powerhouse Illinois and surprising Michigan faced off at Crisler Arena with the winner gaining the inside track to the Big Ten Championship. The Illini were ranked 4th in the nation at 18-4, with the Wolverines just behind at #5 with a 20-3 record.

The two heavyweights felt each other out for the first half, with Michigan coming out on top 35-32 for halftime. After the Wolverines scored the first two of the second half to gain a five point edge, Illinois' Big Three of Dee Brown, Deron Williams and Luther Head stole the show as the Illini went on a monstrous 20-0 run to take a 52-37 lead. From there the Wolverines were hobbled, as they struggled to claw their way back. They got the lead down to 5, but a Dee Brown triple pushed it back to eight in the dying minutes, and the Illini prevailed, 78-71.

Tough loss, another one may be on the horizon with MSU again.

              How has your recruiting gone?
              Blind to this impending fate
We let the world carry our weight
It's back breaks with every mile
But we all live in denial

Wolverines fight off Spartans, earn series split

When the Wolverines lost to the Spartans in East Lansing 16 days ago, it left a terrible taste in their mouths.

When they lost to #4 Illinois four days ago at home in Crisler Arena, they promised they would not be outdone by the Sparties again.

And their determination showed in the first half as they shot 47%, while holding MSU to 38%, and UM had a comfortable 44-30 halftime lead on their instate rivals.

However, Michigan came out totally flat in the second half, making only two of their first 20 shots. The Spartans quickly chipped into the lead, but could not get over the hump. Michigan finished the second half shooting only 9-31 (29%), but their excellent free throw shooting cancelled out MSU's 12-32 second half (38%), and Michigan finally beat their big brothers, 71-65.
