FLORIDA STATE PULLS OUT A MIRACLE

Wow. What. A. Game. This has to possibly be the biggest miracle I’ve experienced in a long time. FSU did the impossible. After giving up a late Field Goal with 14 seconds left in the game. A pass interference call that brought back an interception that would have ended the game gave the Noles one last shot at a miracle. And boy did they ever. Sarderrious Minter threw a 50 yard game winning touchdown to Jamar Reid for the eventual game winner. What a turn of events. The Noles were looking at going 1-3 in ACC play and 2-3 overall. But with that miracle play, the Noles are 3-2 Overall and 2-2 in the ACC and still lead the Atlantic Division and control their own destiny.

The Noles played probably their best game of the year vs an extremely talented team. The Noles Defense finally stepped up to the plate and consistently made plays. They gave up a couple of chunk plays that led to scores, but nothing like we saw in the previous weeks. However the Defense almost let them down by giving up a long pass that lead to a probably game winning Field Goal with 14 seconds to go. The defense gave up another rushing week of over 200 yards rushing, but 2 of those runs were for long busted runs. Other than those two runs the Noles contained the run game. But the Noles did something they failed to do the past few weeks, and that’s find a way to win.


The Good

Freshman QB Sarderrious Minter continues to impress. He’s putting up Heisman like numbers. And after today he definitely should be in consideration. He threw for 435 yards, and ran for another 137. He is clearly the life of this Seminole offense. And his Freshman WR counterpart Jamar Reid isn’t far behind with a 5 catch 145 yard performance.

On Defense, Sophomore CB Detaro Levine has stepped up his game and has become a dominant shut-down cornerback. He plays the run exceptionally well for a Corner, and has really turned up his game as a defender vs the pass.

Freshman CB J.D. Davis who moved to the Ace (Strong Safety) position in favor of veteran Kyle Moore to give the Noles more athleticsm and coverage ability started his first game today and showed plenty of Flash. He played the majority of the game last week and finished with 7 tackles and the Noles rewarded him with his first start this week. He finished with 8 tackles and 2 PBUs at that position.

The Bad

FSU still has to stop big plays in the clutch. FSU did a good job for the majority of the game in limiting an explosive Baylor team from chunk plays. But when FSU needed a stop the most, they gave up the big play. The Noles once again gave up another 200 yard rushing performance and gave up 319 in the air. They found a way to win, but consistency is key this season.
The offensive line still cannot muster a run game. Kartrelle Gaither only had 42 yards on 14 carries, while backup Zaleel Hamby had 4 yards on 2 carries. 16 carries for 44 yards will not cut it if FSU wants to hang on to the Conference Division lead for long.

Preview
This will undoubtedly be the toughest matchup of the year thus far. We welcome the # 1 ranked Hurricanes to Doak-Campbell Stadium this weekend. The Hurricanes made it all the way to the College Football Playoff Championship game last year and lost to Michigan in a thriller of a game. While Michigan has taken a step back this year, Miami has not. They have taken off. They defeated two top 5 foes already this season in #4 Oregon, and #3 Notre Dame in conference action. This will be the Seminoles first primetime game since defeating Maryland the first week of the season.

Key Matchups
Miami boasts probably one of the most star-studded rosters in the country. The only other team that probably has a better roster from top to bottom is Georgia Tech who currently is ranked #2 in the country. For starters, Senior Running Back Maurice Harrison (6'2" ,232) is a projected first round draft pick. He is a workhorse in every sense of the word. He's a big back and Miami uses him effectively. So far this season he's averaging 6.3 yards per carry and 8 touchdowns in 4 games this year.

The Hurricanes also boast a duo of explosive receivers, Chad Chambers (6'1, 177) and Brian Woods, Jr. (6'6", 220). Woods leads the team with 5 Touchdowns so far this season.

On defense, the Noles Offense will have their hands full. Defensive Ends,
Junior Gonzalo Koonce (6'3", 261) and Senior Thomas George (6'3", 253) have been causing havoc all year. Both ends are tied with 4 sacks a piece on the year, with multiple QB hurries to go along with it.

The Hurricanes boast probably the best cornerback groups in the country. Seniors Ricky Booker(5'11", 175) Blaike Jackson (6'0, 185), Junior Chris Key (6'1", 192) and and Redshirt Freshman Charles Ball-Walters (6'3", 188). The Quadruplet corners have a combined 11 Turnovers this season.

The leader of the Defense for the Hurricanes is Linebacker and All-American Senior Rory Owens (6'2", 230) He has 38 tackles and leads the team this season.

FSU STUNS #1 MIAMI

What. A. Shocker. The Noles finally played their best game of the season. Without a doubt. Like, where do we start? The Noles couldnt stop anyone with a pulse this year up until tonight. They rendered the Hurricane offense for the majority of the game. At halftime the Noles only had given up 6 points, and a combined 82 yards for the half TOTAL. A rushing attack that had been plaguing the Noles all year? Only 9 total yards to a guy that came in averaging over 6 yards per carry. The Noles absolutely flipped a switch tonight and finally became a very very good football team.



The Good

Freshman DL Zaveri O'Born was unstoppable tonight. The former Five-Star recruit has been answering the questions about his size all year long and he delivered his best performance to date. The 6 foot, 252 pound athlete finished the night with an astounding 4.5 Sacks against the #1 team in the country. O'Born lined up all over the DL, played both end spots, Nose Tackle as well as DT. Nobody on the Miami Offensive Line could match up with him at all.

Quarterback Sarderrious Minter better and rightfully so, should be in the conversation for the Heisman. He by far had the best game of his young Career. 16/30 311 yards and 2 TDs through the air. Also chipped in 93 yards on the ground, which is also his first game this season not rushing for 100 yards.

The Offensive Line!!

I have no idea what OL coach Dan Rouchard did to make the Offensive Line look the way they did tonight, but please, GIVE THAT MAN A STEAK DINNER! This is the best the OL looked the entire season. They only allowed 2 sacks tonight, and they blocked one of the best front 4 the country has to offer. And they did it consistently. FSU replaced Kevin Lewis who started 4 games this year at Left Tackle with Derique Smith, and returned Right Guard Alex Benson to the starting lineup, and it appeared to be the recipe to success. Smith, Merrick, Lamb, Benson and Martin were the starters and they looked to be the best unit that FSU has had all season long.

FINALLY! A 100 Yard Rushing Performance at RB!

Due to the OL's emergence, FSU finally was able to secure it's first 100 yard rushing performance by a Running Back this season. Kartrelle Gaither finished the contest with 21 carries 113yds (5.3ypc) and 2 TDs. He also busted his longest run of the year for 55 yards for a TD that broke the game open.


The Bad

After you beat the #1 team in the country by double digits, you tend to not really care about the bad. So atleast for this week, we wont even focus on the bad.

BYE WEEK

Current Record: 4-2

After at 4-2 start to the new season, Florida State finally gets to rest and heal and get ready for the second stint of the season as they have arrived to their Bye week. During the bye week we will visit a plethora of things to catch you up to speed with the team, stats, standings and news around the NCAA.

MIDSEASON THOUGHTS
Thus far I am having a blast playing this season. So many ups and downs. So many shockers. So many unexpected things have happened. We are 4-2 and possibly one amazing play away from being 3-3. However, we are still i the thick of the ACC race. To have the schedule we've had and to be 4-2 is a heck of a feat.

QB Sarderrious Minter has been amazing to play with . He is the definition of a playmaker. He just makes plays. He isnt the most polished, but he makes play after play.

WR Jamar Reid who was the former #1 recruit in the country is an absolute monster, and Kennard Thomas is the deep threat that is needed to compliment him. All of our WRs have been a treat to play with.

The Offensive Line has been horrid to average most of the year up until last week vs Miami. Injuries and suspensions probably kept the OL lineup from being paired correctly in order to achieve, so I love the effect of that. But that OL lineup from last week vs Miami I hope I can keep around for a while. They played terrific vs a HECK of a Defenive Line that Miami had.

My defense is solid, and maybe a year or two away from being elite. I still have some positions to fill and some coaching to do to have the player I need in my system thrive. But the Defense is fun to play. The 3-3-5 is such a gimmicky defense and we are making it work and it looked very good against Miami. Again tweaking a few lineup changes may have made the difference. Putting Freshman J.D. Davis at Ace (Strong Safety) over Senior Kyle Moore has really changed the Defense tons too. J.D. is much more athletic than Kyle and can do more things athletically than him. The second half of the season should be really fun.


RECRUITING

Last weekend vs Miami there was over 15 players on an official visit to FSU. And FSU got a ton of good news after they pulled out the upset win vs the #1 team in the nation. FSU got a total of 8 committments from the weekend! Heres a breakdown of the commitments from that exciting weekend!



Pre Scout Rating: 77
The electric athlete chose FSU over Ole Miss, Virginia Tech and Utah. The stout built athlete can play both Running Back and WR for the Seminoles. He is electric with the ball in his hands so the staff will need to find unique ways to get him the football.

Previous Hot Board Assesment:
WR Sytavious Graham 5’6” 183 Belle Glade, FL
#13 WR, #53 Overall
Why I want: Electric athlete. Can fit in the return game and short game I impletment with the offense. Never can have enough playmakers In space. Could also play Running Back.


Pre Scout Rating: 70

He brings the size needed to play both H-Back and TE for FSU in the future. FSU needed a Tight End or two bad in this class and they got one in short order with Whitehead.

Why I want: Low Risk option at H-Back. The preferred is Bailey, but Whiteheads measurables matched with his interest level gives us an opportunity to possibly steal a gem without maxing resources.

Big time pick up at a position of need. Rodriguez chose FSU over Florida, Miami and Georgia Tech. His healthy offer list shows he's a true talent. He could possibly fill the Hawk or the Ace spots in the secondary. If need be he could also play Free.

Why I want: Versatility. Big Time Athlete. Need a secondary like him on the back end.
The Plan: Ace will probably be best suited for him to play. He also could play Safety also. But if we get him Ace would be the best spot for him.



Pre Scout Rating: 88

One of the biggest PICKUPS last weekend was this Five-Star gem. Dixon is the #3 overall prospect in the class and the #1 Athlete. He is the third Five-Star so far in the class. Although listed as an Athlete, he most definitely could play multiple spots, but FSU is recruiting him to play the Free (FS) position or Ace position. He chose FSU over Georgia Tech, Georgia and Florida.

#1 ATH, #4 Overall
Why I want: He is an elite Athlete with one of the top Sparq ratings in the class.
The Plan: He's listed as an athlete and he will be used either at Free, Hawk, or Ace in the secondary. Will see the field early and often.


Pre Scout Rating: 67

We wanted to get bigger on the front line of the defense and it starts with a guy like this. May need time to develop but he fits our scheme perfectly. Chose FSU over Miami, Florida and USF.

Previous Hot Board Assessment:
DE Terrence Manson 6’5” 260 Brent, FL
#17 DE , #238 Overall
Why I want: Great sized gap filler. Underwhelming 40 time at 5.02, but has impressive Bench and Squat numbers.
The Plan: Stricly DE. Could definitely be a great gap control/penetrating DE. Fits into exactly what we need.


Pre Scout Rating: 75

Big time Athlete that can play almost any spot on the defense he wants with his blend of speed size and agility. Right now FSU hasnt placed a specific position he will play when he enrolls. Will possibly be a wait and see type situation depending on needs filled. However, he will see the field early and often.

S Jonathan Stephens 6’3” 220 Sparta, TN
#5 S, #151 Overall
Why I want: He’s the definition of an athlete even though hes a safety. He has a great Sparq Rating, 4.5 speed for a guy a 6’3” 220 is darned good also.
The Plan: When I added him to the board, my initial thought process was he would be one heck of a Bandit(OLB). So its possible he could be moved to Bandit.


Pre Scout Rating: 74 OVR

FSU is getting bigger and more athletic with this pickup. He will definately play one of the Linebacker spots when he enrolls. CHose FSU over Nebraska, FIU and Michigan.

OLB Rashaun Britton 6’5” 230 Poteau, OK
#10 OLB , 190 Overall
Why I want: Could play Mike or Bandit. He’s a hitter, but not only limited to downhill plays. Good sparq rating. Great Size.
The Plan: I believe Mike would be the best landing spot for him. Hes strong and athletic. But also appears to be able to play Bandit also. Once again versatility is a plus.



Pre Scout Rating: 79 OVR

This was a huge pick up in many ways. With the FSU WRs playing very good ball so far this year, adding a guy with elite size like this only makes the unit scarier. He chose FSU over FIU, ECU and Michigan.

Why I want: Big bodied WR. The current Freshman I have right now are 6’3 210, 6’3” 195 and 6’1”205. Adding another big body would be great for the passing game and with his listed 4.36 gives us another vertical threat down field with that size.

This is a very important ACC game. The Noles are back ranked in the top 25 after their stunning overtime victory over Miami. The Noles check in at #22, and are still in the hunt for a chance to play in the ACC title game. In order to obtain that feat, winning out in the rest of conference play is an absolute must. And it begins this week at home vs The Cardinals.

Key Matchups

Junior Quarterback Matthew Graham leads the charge for Louisville. At 6'5" 215 he has the size NFL scouts love. And he's been playing pretty well this year. Throwing for 65% of his passes with 17 Touchdowns. Louisville has a pretty thin WR corps, but its led by All Conference WR Jordan Gray who is second in the ACC in touchdown catches with 9.

Defensively the Cardinals are lead by Senior Defensive End Sean Parham, who has 6.5 sacks on the season. The Cardinals also lead the ACC in pass defense efficiency, only allowing 174.4 pass yards per game. Cortez Temple leads the crew with 3 interceptions on the season.

BREAKING NEWS
Florida State will be without its leading reciever this week vs Louisville.

Jamar Reid has suffered a sprained hamstring and has been deemed OUT for this weeks game vs Louisville. It's possible Freshman Benito Tipton will start in his place this week.

FSU will also be without Starting Senior DE Cameron Landrum as he has suffered a broken foot. Landrum is second on the team in Sacks with 6.5. Look for DE Sharaad Bonner to replace him this week.

Reserve veteran, Senior DB Kyle Moore is also out this week with a sore ankle.

FSU ROLLS PAST LOUISVILLE 56-14

What a difference a week or two makes right? Just a few weeks ago FSU was sitting at 2-2, and here we are. The Seminoles pull of a convincing win vs the #1 team in the country 1 week prior, and this week they absolutely roll the Louisville Cardinal. The Noles team tonight looked primed and destined to compete at a high level. They looked much more confident this week and actually probably played even better than they did vs Miami. The Noles needed this win and handled buisness.


The Good
The receivers had a great collective effort being without their #1 option this week Jamar Reid. Kennard Thomas lead the bunch with his 2 touchdown effort. He led the team with 4 catches for 135 yards on the evening.

QB Sarderrious Minter added to his impressive Freshman season Heisman campaign, going 18/42 326 5 TDs and 2 Ints, and chipping in 174 yards on the ground on 12 carries.

On Defense, Freshman 'Spud' LB Kyson Perry had his breakout game of the year. Perry had 5 Tackles on the night with 3 sacks and 2 PBUs.



The Bad
Wasnt much bad this game with a 56-14 victory. The Offensive Line howeever did take a few steps back after playing an outstanding game vs Miami. They alllowed 4 sacks, and RB Kartrelle Gaither couldnt muster much on the ground with 19 carries for 61 yards.

Preview
The race to the ACC Championship heats up as we are in midseason form. FSU must go on the road and defeat inner-division foe Wake Forest(3-3). Wake has had a surprising good start to their season. They started the season 3-1, and have dropped their last 2 contests to Virginia and #25 NC State. If FSU wants to keep their ACC hopes alive, they must continue on their trend to win out the remaining ACC games. Wake forest, like FSU only has 2 conference losses. So it's imperative FSU comes in focused and primed to win or else their Conference title hopes are all but over.

Key Matchups
Junior QB Antwan Melton leads the Demon Deacon offense this year. Currently he's completing 57% of his passes with 10 TDs with 5 interceptions.

RB Brent Davis is averaging 6.1 yards per carry this year ..****shing for 671 yards. Its important FSU contains him or they could be in for a long day. Good news is the past few games FSU has played much better against the run.

Defensively , the Deacons are led by Junior S Kenneth Canaan and (RS)SO S Gary Williams. They have anchored the Demon Deacons Defense by holding down the back end of that defense.

FSU must find a way to over come the undersized Defensive front the Deacons will put on the field saturday. Defensive Tackles Kevin Jean (6'2" , 268) and Kendall Jean (6'2" 287) are the starting DTs for the front line, along with John Thompson (6'3" 250) as the one of the other Defensive Ends. Converted DT Van Calhoun plays the other Defensive End spot for the Deacons at 6'3" 288.

**BREAKING NEWS**
Starting CB Detaro Levine has been suspended for this week's game vs Wake Forest for violation of NCAA rules. Levine has started every game this season and has played 100% of the snaps at Cornerback for the Seminoles. Levine has big a huge part of the defense for FSU this season as he is third on the team in tackles with 52, to go along with 4 interceptions and 5 pass breakups.

The Noles even got more bad news as starting LB Sapomo Onwtagwu has been suspended for the season for violation of NCAA rules. Onwtagwu a former Five-Star prospect, was second on the team in tackles with 59. He also has played the majority of the snaps at the Mike position for the Seminoles this season. His status to return after this season is unclear at this stage. Last season Onwtagwu was the Seminoles leading tackler as a True Freshman.

Replacements for Suspended Players
WIth the suspension of Leonard for this weeks game, FSU does not have much experience depth at corner. Leonard has played every snap at Right Corner for the Seminoles. Coach Verner has announced that he will start True Freshman Jerrell Horn (6'0", 183) in his place this game. That will make Four True Freshman starting in the secondary against Wake Forest. Isaac Boles (6'3" 190) has started every game this season at CB opposite of Leonard, J.D. Davis (5'11" ,191) entered the starting line up three weeks ago at the Ace position, Bihadda Maddox (5'11" 190) has started the majority of the year at the Hawk Position other than the 3 games he was supspended, and now Jerrell Horn will make his first start this year at Corner. Horn has played limited snaps this season only recording 3 tackles on the year on special teams.

At Linebacker, filling the shoes of Sapomo Onwtagwu will be a bit more complicated. Verner announced that (RS) JRRashad McCullough will move to Mike, he's been playing Bandit most of the season. And with SRBuster Burkes, the backup Bandit suspended for the next two games, that leave the position very thin. With McCullough moving to Mike, Coach Verner will start True Freshman Taylor Covington at Bandit vs Wake Forest. Covington has played sparingly this season mostly as a pass rusher. On the season he has 10 tackes, 1 sack and 2 tackles for loss.

GAME RECAP

Florida State continues its win streak as they continue their win streak in must win game situations. The weather wasnt pretty, and after the first two Seminole drives the Seminoles wasnt very pretty either. The Noles stuck hard and fast the first two series with Jamar Reid erupting after missing last weeks game due to a hamstring injury. After the Noles jumped out on top quickly in the 1st quarter, the game slowed down tremendously. The game never seemed in doubt, but Wake Forest played one heck of a football game.



The Good
Florida State won. Thats the best you can hope for the later the season goes. FSU has two must win games left on the schedule. Syracuse next week, and Clemson at home in two weeks.



QB Sarderrious Minter continues his magical season yet again. However, Duke did one hell of a job on containing him as much as possible and making him a passer. Wake Forest kept him to a season low 48 yards rushing. However, Wake Forest dared him to pass, and he did just that. Minter finished the game 19/32 402 yards and 2 TDs and 2 Int on the night. Minter obviously has a stranglehold on the Heisman Trophy race currently and this game did not hurt his stock at all.



WR Jamar Reid , came back with vengeance after missing last weeks game due to injury. He finished the night with 4 catches 147 yards and 2 TDs.

The Bad



FSU Played a lot better in the run game vs Wake Forest, but Anthony Melton was extremely surgical tonight and posted the highest completion percentage given up by FSU this season. Melton completed 76% of this passes, going 19/25 261 yards with 1 TD.

Replacements following suspensions
Due to starters CB Detaro Levine, and LB Sapomo Onwtagwu being suspended this week, there were questions on how the defense would fare after the two players have played such a significant role for the FSU defense. First off, LB Rashad McCullough led the team in tackles with 14 after moving from Bandit to Mike. He was all over the field and seemed to be in every play.

Since McCullough moved from Bandit, that left an open spot. LB Taylor Covington got the start at Bandit as a True Freshman, and played well. However, veteran LB Akeem Austin played lights out. And as the game went on, Austin cemented himself there for the time being. Austin has been playing all 3 LB spots this year as well as DE. Being a veteran that has played in this Defense at his stint at Georgia Tech with Coach Verner, its obvious FSU trusts him at many places. And he excelled yesterday playing the Bandit spot.

At corner, Freshman CB Jerrell Horn played lights out. He was rarely targeted in the game and only gave up one reception all game. There were questions if he was ready at such short notice but he proved he was. And he had one heck of a game replacing Detaro Levine.

BYE WEEK

The Seminoles have arrived at their final bye week of the season. And it comes as the Noles face probably the toughest and most important stretch of the season. The Noles have 3 conference games remaining. And in order to punch a ticket into the ACC Championship game in December. First and foremost, the Noles must win out. Secondly, Clemson must lose atleast two games for the Seminoles to advance. One of which, must be to FSU. Clemson, 4 remaining ACC games left. Their toughest games? #18 FSU, and #23 NC State, both on the road. They also face Wake and Syracuse. So needless to say, FSU must win out, but they need a little help even if they do.



The Coastal Divsion is all but wrapped up with West Virginia leading their own destiny.



REMAINING SCHEDULE

FSU has four games left in the season, 3 in conference. All 3 conference games will be tough sledding, including the finale vs Florida at home. The good news? After Syracuse next week(If they can pull out the victory), the rest of FSU's games will be at home, and home field advantage will be pivotal.

Syracuse may be out of the ACC picture with last weeks loss to Louisville. However, they are still fighting to be bowl eligible. A loss this week would definitely make that a lot more difficult. They must win atleast two of their last four games to accomplish that feat. However, 3 of those games comes from ranked teams, FSU, Clemson and NC State. But, at 4-4, Syrcause boasts a ton of talent. And they defintely have the talent to complete the task at hand.

Key Matchups

QB Matt Smart has had an up and down season for the Orange. The Redshirt Sophmore is completing 55.8% of his passes for 1,462 yards and 7 TDs but with 9 Ints.

The strength of the offense comes from RB Lamar Byrd (6'0" 205) who is averaging 5.5 yards per carry on the year. He has 103 carries for 565 yards and 8 Touchdowns for the Orange. While FSU has gotten better defending the run as the year has passed, it still seems to be a weakness for the Seminoles. Stopping Byrd will be key to success this game.

WR Jacob Herron has been Matt Smart's favorite target so far this year. Smart has 43 catches on the year for 712 yards which puts him in the top 10 in both categories in the ACC.

Marching Chiefs set to travel
With this being the final road game of the year, the Marching Chiefs of Florida State will travel to Syracuse, NY as the team will take on the Orangemen. The Chiefs have not traveled to any road games this season.

This game has huge implications for Florida State. Florida State needs Clemson to lose one of its remaining three Conference games including one to them, in order to be able to move on to the ACC Championship game.
