Re: FSU: The Rebuild and "the Return" (NCAA 2019 Dynasty)

    SPRING CAMP DAY 2

The Noles open up Day 2 of camp and the day was a bit more intense than day one. However, Head Coach Cameel Verner says that's pretty normal as everyone begin to settle into things as time progresses.

"Today our guys really went after it. Saw some things that we liked. Saw some things we can build on, but also saw some things we need to polish up. But overall the intensity is there. The competitiveness is there. " he said.

    QUARTERBACK BATTLE SHAPENING UP?

The Noles entered camp with Five scholarship Quarterbacks on it's roster. Two Former Five-Stars, two former Four-Stars, and last seasons starter Clay Tillman who was a former Three-Star. The question remained with so many high caliber blue chippers on it's roster how the spring would pan out. Early on, we looked to have a small smidge of separation.

Sophomore Sha'Dar Walker had the best day of all the Quarterbacks. And Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser really detailed it.

"Walker had some great reps today. He really did. His understanding of the offense, his understanding of his role back in the pocket. He understands he's not just a pocket guy. He can do a lot of things back there. His athletic ability kept him out of lot of tough situations back there. 42 (LB George Phillips) is a very tough guy to block right now. But Walker's legs kept a ton of plays alive." he said.

Highly touted Freshmen QBs Terry Washington and Ko'Dallas Avery had their fair share of growing pains today after opening eyes a bit during day one. Simply put, they looked like Freshman. Redshirt Junior Clay Tillman also had a pretty strong showing today also.

"Tillman is a savy vet. He really understands logics and concepts very well. He looked sharp today. As a group the entire Quarterback group has somethings to work on, but it's very early. We got a lot of things we can clean up."
    said Kiser.

    C. BROWN MATCH UP NIGHTMARE?

    High School Profile

The most impressive day of any player today goes to Redshirt Sophomore Chris Brown. At 6'4" 215 pounds he has the height and length that is just an unfair mismatch for most Defensive Backs. The former Four-Star from Okeechobee, FL was a reserve for his first two seasons on campus. Understandably, he was behind 3 future NFL Draft Picks (Possibly 4 with Orbit Jackson entering his Junior year). The biggest issue outside of his size, is his speed and jumping ability. Brown reportedly runs a 4.37, and it shows on the field. Several coaches raved about him after practice.

"That kid is special. He's a blue collar worker. But he's a talent, a special talent that's for sure." said Head Coach Cameel Verner.

"Brown does a TON of things for us, but his vertical threat is something to behold. It really is. And he's consistent. He's such a humble kid, and works very hard. And guys that have his talent normally don't have the patience to wait their turn, but he did. And so far he's taking advantage of it. He's an absolute talent." Said OC Hayden Kiser.

"We had no answer for him. That's all I really can say." said Defensive Coordinator Ryan Dukes

During the ending reps, Chris Brown reeled in one of the most impressive catches we might have ever seen live, when he caught a 1 handed pass over All-American Defensive Backs Luron Dixon(33), and Ja'Carius Kidd(2) both who have been pegged as 1 Rounders in the 'Way too early Mock Drafts'.

    PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: TE T.J. THOMAS

    High School Profile

T.J. Thomas was a lowly recruited Three-Star out of Merced, TX his Senior season. Before FSU offered him in late January, he only had offers from SMU, UTEP and UTSA. However, Florida State saw tape of him and wanted him badly.

    T.J. Thomas Senior Season

T.J.'s route to Tallahassee wasnt a conventional one, Florida State recruiting analyst Fred Lee takes us back to the inside scoop on Thomas' road to FSU.

"On a recruiting trip last season, the coaches were out in Texas scouting a guy who eventually went on to sign with Tulsa. But he was playing AGAINST T.J.'s team. And they were like, 'who is this kid?' Ultimately it ended up being Thomas. After watching his film they were sold. Thomas was a solid guy. Very well built. Looked like a NFL Linebacker. But he has a crazy catch raidus, runs routes extremely well, and FSU put the Fullcourt press on him and the rest is history" said Lee.

At 6'4" 230 pounds, Thomas eventually so far has converted to Tight End. But so far this season he's shown ability to separate and give FSU different looks and options at the Y-Flex (Tight End) spot that they haven't had much of. And Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser loves what he sees so far.

"T.J. is a heck of an athlete. One heck of a player. And I think he has a chip on his shoulder because he doesn't have the accolades that the other guys on the roster had coming in. And right now he's battling his tail off." said Kiser.

      SPRING CAMP: DAY 3

The Noles completed their 3rd day of Spring Camp in preparation of the Spring Game. The Noles practiced inside the practice facility so media access was closed for most of the practice. We did get access for the first 20 minutes of practice, however. And we also got a chance to speak to all the coaches and get their insights of the progression of the players.

NEWS AND NOTES OF OPEN PORTION: QBS

The Quarterbacks from the beginning portion still looked similar to yesterday. Sophomore Sha'Dar Walker led the beginning portion of drills and looked extremely sharp.

Redshirt Junior Clay Tillman looked sharp as well. Intermediate throws were on point and connected very well with Freshman WR Darcy Miller on some open routes as well.

Freshman Terry Washington has a very live arm. He might have the best arm talent of all the Quarterbacks. Still has a bit of a hesitation on trusting reads.

      Offensive Notes

Redshirt Junior WR Tso Cyrus has impressed so far in camp

The Receivers once again were the topic of discussion from the coaches. Redshirt Sophomore WR Chris Brown still continues to be raved by the staff as his playmaking ability continues to stand out.

Freshman WR Shabazz Blades suffered a minor injury today but doesn't expect to be out very long according to Head Coach Cameel Verner.

Redshirt Sophomore WR Tso Cyrus also had a few good moments in the early portion as well. At 6'5" 225, he isn't the blazer that Blades or Brown may be, but he's been showing consistent hands throughout the spring.

The most pleasant surprise of the spring has been the running of Junior RB Trey Wright. The former Five-Star recruit has been showing a different gear so far this spring and now with the opportunity of having a starting role has also seen an increase of confidence as well.

"Today was a pretty good day, guys are starting to get in a rhythm. Starting to understand roles. 19 (WR Tso Cyrus) and 6 (Trey Wright) had really good days. 6 is really becoming the leader we need on that side of the ball. Leading by example. " said Head Coach Cameel Verner

      Defensive Notes

Freshman DB Thomas Spiller continues to impress early on in camp and from what we saw in the opening portion is he was playing with 1st team defense. He has stood out from his very first snap and has continued to get better as the camp has progressed. We talked with DC Ryan Dukes after practice and he had nothing but great things to say about the Freshman from Brownsville, FL.

"The kid has that South Florida mentality. He has that "it" factor. He plays hardnosed ball. Has an attitude to him. I love his mentality. He's an agressive player and sometimes we have to reel him back because he's such a "get after it" kind of guy" said Dukes.

Redshirt Junior DE/LB George Phillips continues to be dominant. Since Cameel Verner's arrival, he hasn't had a dominant pass rusher since former DL Zaveri O'Born's Freshman season where he tallied 17.5 sacks. O'Born went on to be drafted to the NFL, but the Noles really lacked an elite pass rusher last year and it showed. But Phillips has been unstoppable so far this Spring. During the open portion, we saw Phillips dominate in OL/DL drills and won all 5 battles on the edge. He even went up against former Five-Star Tackle Synnquan Evans and won both reps. Evans, who hasn't allowed a collegiate sack in his short career (he's entering his Sophmore year), nor did he allow a single sack in High school, shows the promise Phillips has a a pass rusher.

      PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: OL DERIQUE SMITH

SMITH LOOKS TO MAKE MOST OF SECOND CHANCE

The massive Senior lineman from Vero Beach, FL has spent his entire collegiate career with Cameel Verner as his Head Coach. He started out his career playing Left Tackle for the Noles. Ultimately, moved to Right Tackle due to a struggling offensive line unit. By his Junior year, he moved to full-time Right Guard. At 6'7" 335 pounds, he has the size and versatility NFL scouts covet. But his career has been derailed by injuries.

His Freshman season, he suffered a pectoral injury that sidelined him for a few weeks. And last season, he suffered a Turf Toe that would sideline him for the remainder of the season during Week 9. Unfortunately Turf Toe can effect players differently, and with Smith being the size he is, initially was thought he career might be over.

"The doctors told me that the injury is tough to heal from ordinarily. Especially with me being as big as I am it's kind of a toss up. It was hard, really hard. Because I know I still wanted to play. I just had to pray man" said Smith.

Smith was ahead of schedule in his Rehab and is moving around very well in his the first few days of Spring practice. Offensive Line coach Harry Hiestand says he looks even better than last season.

"He has improved tremendously. I think the injury scared him and made him work harder and it's showing. Not many people get second chances. But he did and he's making the most of it right now. He's consistent. He has an added mean streak." said Hiestand.

      PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: LB DAVID GRIER

LOOKS LIKE A DIFFERENT PLAYER WITH ADDED WEIGHT

Sophomore Linebacker David Grier surprised a lot of people with his production as a True Freshman last season. He finished the season second on the team in tackles with 117 playing Middle Linebacker for the Seminoles. What's even more impressive about that stat, David Grier primarily played Wide Receiver in high school. Grier played his Freshman season weighing around 208 pounds.

      High School Profile

      High School Highlight Tape

Now three practices into Spring, he has a different attitude and a different swagger although he had an extremely strong Freshman campaign. Grier is now 235 pounds at 6 foot 4 and still seems to have not lost a step in athleticsm, with is a welcomed sight to newly named Defensive Coordinator Ryan Dukes.

"He has a knack for the football. Where ever the ball is no matter where on the field, he's going to be around it. He is such an athlete. Very rangy and a very high I.Q. Even though he was undersized last season, his knowledge always put him in position to make plays. He is a huge asset for the defense." said Dukes.

        SPRING CAMP: DAY 4

        NOLES ADAPT TO NEW OFFENSE

New OC Hayden Kiser played for Cameel Verner from 24'-26

New Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser hasnt taken very long to implement his new style to the Seminoles offense. This season, Kiser will bring his knowledge and experience of a Pro Style offense to the Seminoles offense. The past 4 seasons, the Noles ran a Spread Power offense under former OC Tommy Bowden. Normally, it takes a bit of time for players to adjust to a new scheme. But according to Kiser, the Noles have adjusted very well to the changes.

"We have a good group of players. The biggest adjustment so far is the terminology. But thats normal. The guys have bought in, and adapted very well. The biggest advantage to running Pro Style is having a head start on the scheme moving to the next level. And we have a ton of talent, guys that can play in any scheme." said Kiser

Kiser played in a Pro Style offense during his time at Georgia Tech under Cameel Verner who spent 13 seasons as Head Coach of the Yellow Jackets. Kiser was a former Five-Star recruit and started two seasons with the Yellow Jackets while winning a National Championship as well.

Typically the biggest transition from a Spread offense to Pro Style is the adjustment at Quarterback. Florida State ran 98% of its plays last season in the shotun. But according to Kiser, a couple players have stood out to him in the transition. Sha'Dar Walker is one of them, who hasn't been under center in his career. Kiser says the electric Sophomore has adapted extremely well to the change.

"Walker took 100% of his snaps from Shotgun last season. The same goes for his High School career. But he's transitioned extremely well from under center. The biggest challenge Quarterbacks have under center is the technique, the drops, the foot movement. Walker has had no issue with any of that and it's been an pretty pleasant surprise." said Kiser.

Kiser also praised Redshirt Junior Clay Tillman on his transition as well. But he believes his transition was a bit more expected.

"Tillman was a Wing-T guy all through High School. So his technique is a bit more polished. It was like riding a bike to him. You never forget how to." he said.

Kiser went on to play three seasons in the NFL before injuries forced his career to fall a bit short. But he believes his knowledge of a Pro Style system is a big reason why he even got the chance to play in the NFL.

"The knowledge, terminology, expecations. It all matters. From the very first day in camp. It helps tremendously. You're ahead of the game when you step into camp. And you need all the '1 ups' you can get in the NFL." he said.

        PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: DE ROBERT TATE
TATE PLANS TO MAKE BEST OF RETURN

As a Junior, Tate recorded 27 tackles and 4.5 sacks

One of the most coveted High School prospects that Head Coach Cameel Verner recruited when he first stepped on campus was Defensive End Robert Tate. The former Four-Star product enjoyed early success in his Seminole career, but last season he saw his production drop. Tate elected to return to school and forego the NFL draft and return for his Senior season.

"It wasn't an easy decision. I talked it over with my family. And felt it was best for me to return my Senior season and earn my degree." said Tate

Head Coach Cameel Verner believes Tate made the best decision, and feels he has yet to reach his potential.

"He has a great motor. Has really good hands. Very violent hands. And he's versatile. Can play inside or outside. I think if he applies himself he can get the high draft pick grade he wants." said Verner.

        High School Profile

The 6'4" 283 pound Defensive Lineman has played all over the Defensive front for the Seminoles. He primarily plays End, but the Noles have lined him up at Nose and Defensive Tackle in different sets also. But he also stated he decided to come back for other reasons also.

"We came up short last season. And I want to help us get back to the mountain top. We have unfinished business this year" said Tate.

        PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: WR PIT GRAHAM
        FINALLY HIS TIME TO SHINE

Sytavious Graham now enters his Junior season and his first couple seasons on the team has split time between Kick Return, Running Back and Receiver. The 5'6" 200 pound Junior might be one of the most athletically gifted players in the country. Albeit his short frame, he's one of the strongest players on the team. And has eye popping measurements. He has been clocked as the fastest player on the team with a 4.29 forty. He has an absurd 47" vertical, and has reportedly maxed out at 445lbs in bench press and 760lbs squat. The coaches say they nick named him "Pit" for a reason. More than just his short and stocky build. Pit is also tied for 4th in School History with a 20.10 200m time for Florida State's Track and Field team.

"Pit is a freak of nature. He does a lot. And hes extremely fast. I mean extremely fast. World class speed. But he's a football player first. He's a Football player that runs track, not a track guy that's trying to play football" said Cameel Verner.

"He's very dynamic with the football in his hands, and we have to find ways to continue to get him the football." he continued.

Graham played mostly special teams because of Florida State's loaded WR room. But now that those guys are the NFL, Graham is ready to take the stage and see an increased role in the Noles offense this season. Graham missed a few games last season due to a broken wrist, but did finish the season strong last season , with 15 carries for 121 yards and 21 catches for 165 yards .

"It's an opportunity that I cannot wait to take advantage of. Not to mention we have to finish strong this season. We came up short last year, but this year will be different." he said

Graham was the nations top Kick Returner averaging 33.4 yards per return. And with the Noles this season with his ability to play both Running Back and Reciever, Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser plans to expand his role tremendously.

"He reminds me of Trayvione Ball who played with me at Tech. He's definitely faster. But they have similar styles. We plan on using him in a variety of different ways this season to allow him to showcase his skills and versatility. He's a heck of an athlete." said Kiser.

            SPRING CAMP: DAY 5

Almost half of Spring Camp has come and gone, and we have a lot of our spring questions somewhat answered. The Noles took Day 5 in full pads once again and it appears that atleast for now, the Quarterback situation is starting to clear up. One question mark we have yet to see however, is who is the unconventional leader offensively? The Noles lost a lot of veteran star power last season to the NFL Draft. But with an excess of young talent, as of now it doesn't seem to be a clear cut offensive leader.

On Defense, All-American Junior Defensive Back, Luron Dixon has done much of the leg work when coaches aren't around. Dixon has been making plays and has been in much of the Freshman's faces explaining nuances of the Defense and expecting more from the defense as a whole.

"Dix has been amazing. He's night and day from Spring last year to this year. He knows what's expected from him this season. He's been through it a couple of years, and he's taking the bull by the horns." said Head Coach Cameel Verner.

            QUARTERBACK SITUATION CLEARING UP?

The Seminoles currently sit with Five scholarship Quarterbacks on it's roster. Including two former Five-Star recruits, Sophomore Sha'Dar Walker and True Freshman Terry Washington. We were able to watch closely as today's practice was open to the media and it seems that there has been a lead stretched on who looks to take the reigns. Walker took about 60% of the reps with the First team offense. Clay Tillman took a good portion of the reps with First team offense as well. The other three Quarterbacks, combined took a sample portion with them. Although the practice was open to the media, coaches were not available after practice for us to dig deeper into thoughts.

It appears Walker has a firm grasp of the QB hold. He made some very good throws to Sophomore WR Chris Brown, and Freshman Shabazz Blades as well. Walker appeared crisp, decisive and dangerous leading the offense today.

The biggest enigma was True Freshman Terry Washington. It's extremely apparent Washington has a ton of talent and might have the biggest arm on the team already, but his decision making doesn't appear to be on the level of Walker's. To put it frank, he looks like a Freshman.

It also appears Sophomore B.J. McDaniel and Freshman Ko'Dallas Avery are also in the same treading boat as well. Both are capable of making plays, but consistency is lacking. Avery is a bit more understanding as he's attempting to adapt to the collegiate speed. But for now, it appears that Walker has the lead on the QB1 spot while its a 4 QB race for QB2.

            DEFENSE LOOKING TO REGAIN DOMINANCE

We already touched on the subject of Luron Dixon leading the Noles defense. But as a whole the Noles defense looks big, athletic, and fast. The Noles last season struggled a lot at times during the season. It didn't help much that the offense was inept at times as well, but the defense did not look like a normal Cameel Verner led defensive team.

"It's no secret we had our fair share of struggles last season. But this year the vibe has changed. We have worked so hard so far to understand what we are doing on each and every play. Every possession matters, every blade of grass counts" said Sophomore LB Jamar Sykes.

"I think we played ourselves short last season. This season I think everyone has committed to give every ounce of sweat in our body to this season. Missing the playoff didn't feel good at all. We dont want that feeling again" he said.

The Noles are led by talented Sophomore George Phillips who has been the rave of Spring Practice so far. The return of DE Robert Tate, and former Five-Star Nose Tackle David McNeil-Days give the Noles a solid front.

"Phil(George Phillips) has really turned it up like crazy man. He's been an absolute monster for us in practice." said Sykes

"He took this off season personal, and he's gotten so much quicker and stronger. Dix (Luron Dixon) has been phenomenal as well. I always hear him behind me guiding us and getting us in better spots before the play at Safety. The communication is way better than how it was last year. We are locked in" he said.

The Defense looks to improve as last year was not a good statistical year. The Noles total defense last season was an average of 398.8 yards per game which ranked 87th. The Noles also had a total of 29 sacks last year which ranked 83rd in the nation.

            PLAYER SPOTLIGHT:CB Ja'CARIUS KIDD

            POISED FOR GREAT JUNIOR SEASON?

At 6'2" 213 pounds, Kidd is the #1 Rated CB on Mel Kipers Big Board as
            Junior

CB Ja'Carius Kidd, the #1 overall player in the country out High School came to Florida State with very lofty expectations. At 6'2" 210 pounds, he's built very much like his older brother, Aldarius Kidd who is now in year 7 with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL (Madden 20).

Aldarius, who played for WR Cameel Verner at Georgia Tech was a two time Heisman winner and owns every receiving record there is at Georgia Tech by the time he left as a Junior. At 6'2" 223 pounds, he went on to be selected #1 overall in the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, after running a 4.32 at the NFL Combine, and has been an All-Pro selection every year in the NFL. In his three-year stint at Georgia Tech, he amassed 166 rushes for 1,863 yards and 368 catches 5,353 yards with two Heisman trophies and two National Titles.

Now, the younger Kidd, Ja'Carius enters the frey and is widely considered the top NFL Corner prospect entering his Junior year.

"Man I thank god and my parents daily. I'm just happy to be here and happy to be apart of all of this. But honestly, my goal is to continue to get better and to help my team. Because we have unfinished business this season." said Kidd.

Ja'Carius committed to Florida State before even taking an official visit to Tallahassee. But it didn't take long for someone to notice how talented he is as a player. Former All-Pro and All-American Deion Sanders, advised Kidd that he would un-retire #2 for him to wear if he wanted to be apart of the Garnet and Gold family. And nontheless, Kidd wears the #2 proudly and has also made "Primetime" proud of the kind gesture.

"I talk to Prime alot. He's from Ft Meyers just like I am, and I was so honored for him to let me wear his number. Once he did that for me I knew I couldn't let him down" Kidd said with a chuckle.

Mel Kiper has Kidd as the #3 overall player in this year's NFL Draft if he decides to forego his Senior season next year and opt out early as Junior. PFF has Kidd as the #1 coverage corner with a grade if 96.4. Second in the country is Terrence Baldwin of USC at 90.1. He only has 8 interceptions in his career at FSU, 6 of them came this past season. But teams don't throw his way very often.

"Corners like him don't come around very often. Honestly, players like him and his brother don't come around often. They are very, special athletes. How I was lucky enough to coach both of them I have no idea. But I'm glad I was able to. They are unique I will say that." said Head Coach Cameel Verner

            PLAYER SPOTLIGHTB BIHADDA MADDOX

            SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST

            [

Bihadda Maddox opted to fore-go the NFL Draft and return for his SR year

Senior Bihadda Maddox has been Florida State's "Hawk" for the past four seasons. At 5'9" 185 pounds, he's quick enough and athletic enough to match up with slot WRs and Flex Tight Ends from his Slot Corner position, known as the "Hawk" in their base 3-3-5 Defense.

Maddox was a High School receiver turned Defensive Back, and has started for Florida State since his first game as a Seminole.

"When we recruited him, we felt he fit absolutely perfect in what we wanted to do. He was feisty, twitchy, rangy...and we wanted him badly. And he adjusted from Wideout to Defensive Back extremely fast." said Cameel Verner.

As a Junior, he didnt have his best statistical year. He did have two interceptions on the season. His best season came in his Sophomore year when he had 47 tackles with 3 interceptions two going for Touchdowns. But he didnt get the Draft Grade he wanted as a Junior and opted to return. So this season, he says he's saving his best for last.

"Last season was really dissapointing for me. I know what I'm capable of. I know what I can do for this team. So I knew I had to come back to wrong my rights. I watched a lot of tape on myself and I saw a lot of things I did wrong. It was really disappointing to watch that tape of last season. I cant lie" said Maddox

Even though Maddox says he dissapointed himself, the staff still thinks a lot of him, including his new Defensive Coordinator Ryan Dukes.

"B(Bihadda) is such a competitor. He takes everything to heart, wears his emotions on his sleeve. He wants to be perfect. The approach he's taken so far has been blue collar. He has a different bounce in his step. He's playing with a ton of energy and emotion. The guys are feeding off it. I'm loving the effort up to this point." he said.

Maddox has been playing "Hawk" his entire career at FSU. But this Spring, Cameel Verner felt it would be best for him to also help the team out elsewhere.

"We've been moving him around and also been playing him at "Free" (FS) as well. He knows every single thing about this defense and he has the range to play Free, and he's played extremely well there as well. His ability to bounce around the secondary has opened up a gateway of possibilites we have defensively now. His knowledge is second to none. We're going to keep rolling with it that way and see what we can continue to build off of it" said Verner.

Either way, Maddox is poised for a heck of Senior campaign and is ready for whatever it brings.

"I'm just ready to go man, it's go time" said Maddox.

              SPRING CAMP: DAY 6

              Q&A WITH OC HAYDEN KISER

Cameel Verner coached Hayden Kiser at Georgia Tech from '24-26'

Hayden Kiser has been Florida State's Offensive Coordinator for a few months now and already has made an impact in his short stay. He played for Cameel Verner, Sr at Georgia Tech from 24'-'26. He was a Five-Star recruit from Humble, TX, and was rated the #4 overall player in the country and #1 QB in the class. After his career at Georgia Tech, Kiser went on to play for the Chicago Bears for 3 years as he was selected as a 3rd round pick. Kiser was a 2 year starter for the Yellow Jackets as he battled injuries for most of his career, but did lead Georgia Tech to a Championship his final season there. While with the Bears, he suffered numerous injuries before ultimately retiring from the NFL early.

Kiser hasnt taken very long to implement his new style of Offense to the Seminoles. This season, Kiser will bring his knowledge and experience of a Pro Style offense to the Seminoles offense. The past 4 seasons, the Noles ran a Spread Power offense under former OC Tommy Bowden. This year, Quarterbacks will spend less time in Shotgun, and more time under center. Which is a big change to what fans have seen from the Noles during it's championship run.

With practice today being closed to the Media, we did have access to the coaches and we were able to get a brief Q&A with the Seminoles newest coach.

Q: With the transition from a Spread Offense to a Pro Style, halfway through camp, how would you rate the team's progress up to this point?

Kiser: It's been pretty fluent. The guys have worked hard, especially the Quarterbacks. They are the ones who technically get impacted the most. The footwork changes, the mechanics, things like that. But up to this point it's been a pretty solid transition.

Q: Are there any players that have stood out to you up to this point? Guys who may have benefitted from the transition?

Jardai Slaughter vs Ohio Bobcats in the Peach Bowl

Kiser: J.D. (Jardai Slaughter) to me has taken full advantage of it. Simply because he's such a powerful runner. He gets to get downhill faster than normal. His skillset just flourishes. There are a number of other guys that also has had a pretty solid camp as well. Clay Tillman is another guy. It fits him. He's Pro Style guy all the way.

Q: Has Coach Verner changed in anyway since you last were around him in Atlanta?

Kiser: Honestly he's even worse now that I'm a coach. I thought it was bad as a player, but I didn't see THIS side of things. But no, he's great. He's still the same ol' coach if you ask me.

Q: Spead teams typically don't use Fullbacks. Florida State hasn't recruited one in Verner's tenure at FSU. Who is the guy you have in mind to fill that void as you switch to the Pro Style system?

Kiser: There are a couple of guys in mind. But Melvin Whitehead is a guy who's been playing Tight End for us that also can play the Fullback/H-Back role. He's physical and he's athletic. He plays a few different roles for us.

Q: The Quarterback position has been a pretty popular subject this off-season. Halfway through camp, has anyone separated themselves from the other?

Kiser: All the Quarterbacks have been doing extremely well. They all are working hard and doing what is asked. I love the competitiveness, but I also love how they still work well with each other. It's been a sight to see. Not many teams have the opportunity to coach Five extremely talented Quarterbacks. We have a good problem on our hands here.

Q: Are there any Freshman on the Offensive side of the ball that stand out?

Kiser: Darcy Miller is one heck of an Athlete at WR. He's kind of in that role Pit is for us. That Hybrid RB, WR guy. But he has the ability to earn a very healthy living at WR at the next level. He's special. Lance Mason at Tackle is going to be very, very good down the line also.

Q: Last question, are there any players that you just sitback and say to yourself "we have to get this guy involved as much as possible" ?

Kiser: Yeah everyone(with a laugh). But Chris Brown at WR is electric. He really is. He makes a ton of plays. With his speed at 6'4", he's just a very tough matchup. Also at Running Back, Trey Wright has emerged as well. He's doing some things that turns heads. Also T.J. Thomas at Flex. His size, and strength with his speed is just very rare. He's extremely athletic for a Tight End. We got a lot of talent here that's for sure.

              PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: WR ORBIT JACKSON

              SPEED KILLS

Junior WR Orbit Jackson is the returning leading WR for the Noles

One of the highest recruits in recent classes for FSU was Junior WR Orbit Jackson. He was FSU's second leading WR last season with 55 catches for 849 yards and 5 touchdowns. With 3 starting WRs moving on to the NFL, Jackson is the only returning WR with major game experience. He's also one of the fastest prospects in the country. He's shown world class speed as he posted a PR 9.98 100m which ties for 4th best in FSU history. Jackson owns the Texas High School State 100m(10.10), Long Jump and Triple Jump records as well, previously held by Marquise Goodwin. With those numbers, Jackson qualifies to be an Olympic Sprinter for the US. So in the coming months, he has a decision to make if he wants to continue playing football, or if he wants to turn pro as a sprinter.

"I've always loved Football. Has always been my favorite sport." said Jackson "The biggest thing I'm concerned about right now is helping my team in track winning a second straight National Championship, and then helping the Football team win one too. That's all I'm concerned about" he said.

              High School Profile

Jackson was rated the #2 overall player in his class coming out of High School in Bay City, TX. His speed alone will probably peg him as a First Round talent as long as he keeps up the on-field production. At 6'2" 203 pounds, he has excellent size at WR that allows him to play in the slot or on the outside.

"We are going to utilize his abilities as much as possible this year" said OC Hayden Kiser "He's a unique talent, everyone raves about his speed, but he's a heck of a route runner as well and he definitely makes all the catches. He's a complete receiver. That's why he's such a threat" he said.

This year, as the lone returning WR, if he returns to the Noles this fall, Jackson has the ability to leave his mark on the field.

              PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: WR CHRIS BROWN
THE MATCHUP NIGHTMARE GETS HIS CHANCE

All the rave so far this season is Chris Brown's vertical ability and playmaking ability. At 6'4" 215, and running a clocked 4.3 40...Brown has completely turned heads in camp.

"We sometimes just simply have no answer for him" said DC Ryan Dukes

Dukes says the Redshirt Sophomore alters what they want to do defensively, and Head Coach Cameel Verner even chimed in singing the same tune. Saying he's probably more of a threat than First Round pick and former Seminole Jamar Reid who was FSU's leading WR the last three seasons.

"Brown just changes things. He gets down field in a hurry and he seems to make all of the tough grabs. The difference between him and Reid, is Reid was a bit more complete. But Brown's vertical threat is just on a different level." said Verner

              High School Profile

Verner doesn't often praise his players publicly often, but typically when he does it's worth the price of admission. Brown didn't get much of an opportunity to shine his first 3 years at Florida State. The former Four-Star recruit was redshirted his first season, and sat behind 3 eventual NFL Draft picks last season. This year, the opportunity will present itself for him to take over.

In his lone start of his career, he started in the Peach Bowl vs Ohio as both Jamar Reid and Kennard Thomas opted to not play in the game to prepare for the NFL Draft. And Brown did not take long to be noticed as he finished that game with 5 catches for 118 yards and 2 Touchdowns.

"I'm just ready to show the world what I'm capable of. I'm just ready to be great." said Brown

The Noles are scheduled to have one final scrimmage of the spring tomorrow before the Spring Game. That practice will also be closed to the media. We hope to get up with DC Ryan Dukes for a similar Q&A.

                SPRING CAMP: DAY 7

Q& A WITH DC RYAN DUKES

Dukes covering former Seminole Jamar Reid in practice

Yesterday we were able to catch up with the Noles new OC, Hayden Kiser in a Q&A interview. With practices being closed again today with the Seminoles having their second scrimmage of the Spring, we were able to speak with newly hired Defensive Coordinator Ryan Dukes.

Former DC, Tim Beckman was the Defensive Coordinator for FSU for the past 3 seasons. He was hired in the off-season to be the new Head Coach of Boston College. Dukes comes to Tallahasse as a former a walk-on Safety for the Seminoles, and also served as a Graduate Assistant for the last two seasons. As a player, he played under Cameel Verner in Verner's first two seasons at Florida State.

Q: You were a GA under Cameel Verner for two years, and now get your first attempt as a Defensive Coordinator. How much have things changed for you with that jump?

Dukes: First and foremost it's a blessing. Not many people get the opportunity to not only coach at Florida State, but coach at their alma-mater. Things have most definitely changed. There's a huge expectation here. Very huge. Lots of sleepless nights. But its worth it. We have an exceptional staff. And amazing kids to work with.

Q: Have there been anyone that's stood out to you so far?

Dukes: George Phillips immediately pops out to you. In person and on film. He's taken his game to another level. He's been a lot to handle, and he's so coachable. He does exactly what you ask of him and he executes so well. Kenrell Davis is another guy that's stood out. He's going to be a heck of a player. Luron Dixon, David Grier, there's a lot of guys honestly. They didn't have a great statistical season last year team wise, and you can tell they don't want the same thing happening again. They all have been attempting to out work eachother.

Q: You mentioned Kenrell Davis, who's only a Freshman. What is it about him that stands out?

Dukes: You talk about a kid, that just turned 18 last week. He's 6'4" ..close to 230 pounds. Runs a 4.3 and is like a sponge. He soaks up all the knowledge. He's extremely gifted athletically. We literally play him every where. I think the only spot we havent played him has been Nose Tackle. He's so versatile. He's going to be one heck of a player.

Q: Another Freshman that we've seen a lot of is Thomas Spiller. How has he been progressing?

Dukes: I love the kid. I love his IQ. He's extremely intelligent. One of our smaller DBs on the team, but he has the tools. He's feisty, he's gritty, and he makes plays. He has a knack for the football. He's a pure football player.

Q: The Noles really lacked pass rush last season. Do you see that changing this season?

Dukes: It's definitely been a point of emphasis this off season. In this league, with all the pass happy teams, we have to be able to effect the Quarterback and it's no secret it's something we suffered with last season. That's definitely something we have addressed.

Q: With so many guys moving on to the NFL, has anyone jumped out at you as an emerging on field leader?

Dukes: The guys really look up to Luron Dixon. He talks so much between plays he sometimes forgets to put in his mouth piece. But he does a lot for us mentally and physically. He's a top notch player.

Q: David Grier played Mike Linebacker last season at around 208. How has his off-season so far been like in your eyes?

Dukes: The has really transformed. He's up to around 230 now, and he hasn't lost a step. He's still sideline to sideline and he's a tick faster because he doesn't overthink. Last season did him really well and he's playing a lot faster this season.

Q: Lastly, What is the overall goal for the defense this season in your opinion?

Duke: Dominate. In order for us to not fall short like last season, it starts defensively. Coach Verner has always said a team can't beat you if that can't score. We have to get better in all phases of Defense to get back to that championship caliber team we once were. And that will take consistency. And so far we've seen a lot of that.

The Noles practice tomorrow will be open to the media as they continue to prepare for the Spring game.

                  SPRING CAMP: DAY 8

                  QB1 EMERGING?

Coaches raved about Sophomore QB Sha'Dar Walker today

For the past month or so, there has been much speculation about the on-going QB battle in the spring. The Seminoles have 5 Blue Chip caliber Quarterbacks on it's roster, but everyone knows come fall there can only be one starter. The coaches have kept a poker face for much of the Spring on which QB is getting the upper hand. However, today might be the first day where the coaches completely gushed over their feelings of one.

"He had one of his strongest showings of camp to date. He's an elusive runner, and his accuracy has been spot on. This was definitely one of his more impressive days." said OC Hayden Kiser.

As a Freshman, Walker played in a limited role for the Noles mostly as a runner. However, due to a struggling Offense, the Noles gave Walker his first start in the Peach Bowl vs then undefeated Ohio and crushed the competition going 20/37 398 and 6 touchdowns and 0 turnovers as the Noles went on to win 56-10.

"We knew we had to hunker down and play the way we always feel we should. Playing outside of our element is a reason why we aren't playing for a National Championship this year. But we know if we play Florida State Football there's only one team in the country that can beat us, and thats us." said Freshman QB Sha'Dar Walker said after the game.

Head Coach Cameel Verner also chimed in on Walker's heroic Bowl Game after the Noles were victorious in the post game interview.

"He played extremely well. He had a heck of a game. People have taken notice to his legs most of the year and weren't able to notice how great of a arm he has. He's done an amazing job all year working and progressing to get where is was today. Very proud of him and the rest of our kids. Walker has a very bright future ahead of him." he said.

The future looked bright for Sha'Dar Walker that is until the Noles signed Terry Washington who was the #3 overall player in High School and Four Star Ko'Dallas Avery. But after practice, even with 5 other Quarterbacks on the roster, all the hype was about Sha'Dar Walker.

"He's been improving every day. He's playing up to his potential. He's grasping the new offense well. He's making the right reads, and his ability to escape pressure is something that is hard to teach. He had one of his better practices today, and he's been fairly consistent in his approach. " said Head Coach Cameel Verner.

With Spring coming to an end, fans are excited to see all Quarterbacks in action in the annual spring game.

WILL WE SEE IMPROVEMENT IN OL?

SO LT Synnquann Evans allowed 0 sacks his Freshman season

Last season, the Noles ranked dead last in sacks allowed in the ACC.The Noles had issues protecting it's Quarterback all season long, which ultimately led to the Offense sputtering often during games. And it's no secret that it needed to be fixed in order for the Noles to become championship contenders once again.

"We had issues up front all season long. And that's on me. I have to prepare our guys better. We have a good group of guys. We are young but we have a good group that can get the job done. And we will get the job done" said OL Coach Harry Hiestand.

The Noles hired Hiestand last season from the NFL after seeing a dip in OL production the previous couple of seasons. Hiestand is considered one of the most decorated coaches in all of sports. But last season he saw his fair shair of struggles. But so far this season, he sees a bit of a different demeanor of the "big uglies" up front.

"Last year and this year is night and day. As far as preparation, knowing what to expect. Things like that. Guys understand what's expected of them." said Head Coach Cameel Verner.

                  High School Profile

The Noles have the entire Offensive Line unit returning this season. Including former Five-Star Synnquan Evans who was the #2 overall player coming out of High School. He had an amazing Freshman campaign allowing 0 sacks even though the Noles had a tough time protecting it's Quarterback. Hiestand loves the potential of Evans.

"I havent seen many of his kind around. As long as I've been around the NFL there aren't many like him. Great, great, feet. Long, can bend, is extremely athletic. He probably could make a lot of money playing Tight End. He's a pretty special player. He's got some growing to do, but he has a lot of things about him that cant be taught" said Hiestand.

The OL has been relatively quiet this off-season, which may be a good thing. Normally Offensive Lines are talked about when they are doing bad. Similiar to how we critiqued them all year last year. Any improvement this season will be welcomed.

                  PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: WR JA'CHRISTIAN ANDERSON

                  ANDERSON A RARITY AT WR

Redshirt Freshman Ja'Christian Anderson has a build that every young WR may wish they have. Size. At 6'6" 225 pounds, he poses an ultimate threat on the outside going against smaller corners. Even on FSU's talent laden roster, the tallest corner on it's roster is 6'2". The former Five-Star redshirted most of last season due to the talent it had at wideout. But Anderson was able to play in the final game of the season in the Peach Bowl vs Ohio. And his lone game appearance of the season, fans got a glimpse of why he was so highly touted. He finished the game with 2 catches for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns vs the Bobcats.

                  High School Profile

"He's unique as he brings a good blend of size and speed. And has amazing ball skills. He's used the weight room this off-season to his advantage and I believe is ready to take the bull by the horns and help us this season" Said OC Hayden Kiser.

With the Noles losing 3 underclassmen WRs to the NFL this past year, Anderson now has a chance to step up and carry the load this year with another star studded receiving corps.

                    SPRING CAMP: DAY 9

We had the ability to finally take a look at practice after being closed out of the last two. The Noles seem to have made some changes with roster tweaks since we last observed.

                    QUARTERBACK OBSERVATIONS

The Noles still seem to have Sha'Dar Walker taking the majority of the snaps. While it seems Clay Tillman and and Freshman Terry Washington split reps with the second team.

Walker made some nice intermediate throws, and seems to connect a lot with Redshirt Freshman WR Ja'Christian Anderson. But what really stands out about Walker is his ability to make guys miss in the pocket. Walker is extremely slippery in avoiding sacks, and really makes life tough for opposing defenses.

While Tillman doesn't have the feet and evasiveness that Walker does, Tillman clearly has command of the Offense. His leadership seems to be completely different than last season. Possibly due to the change of scheme of the offense has him more comfortable.

Terry Washington definitely has a bright future, but it does seem his immaturity will have him in a similar spot that Walker was last season as a reserve. But Washington's arm strength might be the best I've ever seen. He has a clear cannon. He might not be ready for QB1 yet, but he's clearly in the running for QB2, atleast for now.

Redshirt Sophomore, QB B.J. McDaniel seems to have taken some steps backwards. He hasn't been as decisive on his reads as the other QBs. While Freshman QB Ko'Dallas Avery seems to be a bit behind on the playbook curve. Avery however, did flash on a couple of QB scrambles. He's a heck of an athlete.

                    RUNNING GAME LOOKING GOOD

Jardai Slaughter has taken full advantage of the scheme change this offseason

With Florida State transitioning to a Pro Style offense, it will rely more on establishing the run than before. The Noles will look to get downhill a lot faster and really punish opposing defenses to open up the passing game where the Noles have mismatches at the WR spot.

"The guys are really getting after it in the trenches. We don't stretch outside as much as years past. A few of our backs have benefitted from the downhill approach. The Offensive Line really loves it. They now focus more on firing off the ball than zone blocking. " said OC Hayden Kiser

A few backs really jumped out at us watching the Backs in action today. Trey Wright and Jardai Slaughter can really be an effective 1/2 combo. With the speed of Wright and the battering ram style of Slaughter, it gives the Noles a different running aspect than in years past. Slaughter being one of the bigger backs on the roster at 223 pounds seems to be one guy that has been positively impacted by the schematic change.

"J.D. really gets down hill and gets down hill fast. He doesn't look to avoid you. He wants to punish anyone that fills gaps. His style of running we love because it really wears teams down" said Kiser.

As practice wears on, we do notice the defense wearing down a bit with Slaughter running. He seems to fit the bill of the old Georgia Tech running back's from when Cameel Verner was able to help Tech win 6 championships in 13 years.

TIGHT END NOW A NEW PREMIUM POSITION?

The first 4 seasons, Tight End was a position that Florida State rarely put any emphasis on. Most of the Seminoles Tight Ends were used as more Flex players and Edge blockers. In 4 years the Seminoles only used more than 1 Tight End on the field only 2% of the time. This year, that will change.

"Some people call it old school, I look at it as football. Yes, we still have the ability to Flex, but we definitely are taking the hand in the dirt approach more this season. And our guys have really taken the challenge to change their mindsets. Getting more phyiscal, helping re-create a new line of scrimmage. Creating mismatches in certain sets. We have a unique blend of different type of Tight Ends this season to where I feel we can use their styles to our advantage" said Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser

The Noles want to become more physical upfront, and while the Seminole Tight Ends have been widely considered bigger Wide Receivers, they all have accepted the challenge that being physical will only help them elevate their talent level. Former High School WR T.J. Thomas took a redshirt last season, but may be the most physically imposing Tight End on the roster. At 6'4" 230 pounds, and a 4.43 clocked 40, even he knows that his style of play must be altered.

"The coaches have told us this season our mindsets must shift. We are going to dominate the line of scrimmage this season. And that's what we plan on doing this year" said Thomas.

TE T.J. Thomas took a Redshirt this past season

"I just want to do whatever it takes to help us win. I think we have a very special team and we don't want to feel like we did last season. No ACC Championship, no playoff appearance, that's not us. That's not Florida State football." he said.

                    PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: NT DAVID MCNEIL-DAYS

MCNEIL-DAYS READY FOR FULL TIME ROLE

The Former Five-Star recruit out of Ravenna, OH was a big time addition for Florida State 3 years ago. His first two seasons, he split time as a reserve. Now, with former Seminole NT Angelo Jackson being selected in the First Round of the NFL Draft this year, McNeil-Days now has the opportunity to take over the full time role as FSU's primary NT.

"It's full go mode this year. We not leaving an ounce of sweat behind. We giving it everything we've got this season. We've got a lot of prove to ourselves and the country." said McNeil-Days

                    High School Profile

McNeil-Days in his first season at FSU came into camp a bit overweight but still played his entire rookie campaign. McNeil-Days played around 364 pounds his Freshman season, but even he says that wasn't ideal playing weight.

"I felt like I wasted away my first season. I had to get that weight down man. Last season I felt great. This season I just want to turn it up even more" he said.

After playing around 364 pounds his Freshman year, McNeil-Days played last season around 340. The coaches believe this season he will be playing between 330-335.

"DMD is a trench guy that I love. Old school guy. His Freshman year I had to tell him he looked slow coming off of the ball late in games. So watching himself on film from his Freshman year to last season I think put a fire under his butt. This year we plan on getting him to play around the 335 mark. " said Head Coach Cameel Verner

If McNeil Days can have a monster year this season, he can probably follow the footsteps of his predecessor Angelo Jackson and become another interior lineman picked in the first round.

                    PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: LB TY'SHALL MCBEE

                    NOW OR NEVER

Redshirt Junior LB Ty'Shall McBee had lofty expectations coming out of High School. But so far in his four year career at Florida State he's been in a reserve role. But with a lot of Seminoles moving on to the NFL, now McBee has a chance to make an impact.

"He's been as patient as anyone. He's had a darn good spring so far, and has the ability to play in coverage or rush the Quarterback for us. He is one heck of an athlete. He plays very well in space. "said Cameel Verner

                    High School Profile

Last season wasn't McBee's best statistical year as he only had 12 tackles while playing a resreve role in 14 games. But with a breakout spring so far, McBee gives the Noles another athletic body in it's front seven. At 6'5" 255 pounds, McBee has a ton to offer on the Noles defense.

"For him to be so big he plays with great leverage. Has tremendous speed for a guy his size and his versatility helps us out. He's able to play stand up Edge , DE, or Mike LB. He does a lot for our defense. " said DC Ryan Dukes

With McBee entering his 4th season, he now has a chance to become a full time starter. Nole nation would love nothing more than to see him deliever an All-American type performance this season.

The Noles will have their last practice of the spring tomorrow before the Spring Game this weekend. Stay tuned for more spring coverage.

                      SPRING CAMP: FINAL PRACTICE

All-American DB Luron Dixon expects a huge season defensively

DEFENSE SEIZES THE DAY OF FINAL PRACTICE

The Florida State defense got the praise of all the coaches after practice today. The Noles Head Coach Cameel Verner could not stop gushing about the Seminoles defensive effort today.

"I'm so proud of how they competed today. At this point we just have to become consistent. Now that we see they can be dominant, we have to learn to be dominant at all times. This was definitely the most complete day we've seen all Spring from the defense. From beginning to end." said Head Coach Cameel Verner

The much maligned FSU defense had it's fair share of struggles last season. Opposing Quarterbacks torched the defense of the Seminoles, as the Noles gave up 6 300 yard performances through the air, including a school record four 400 yard performances.

"We didn't live up to our expectations. We know we are much better than the way we played. But we aren't going to harp on it too much, because this year we have made it clear we are focused and locked in. " said All-American Defensive Back Luron Dixon.

Dixon was the Seminoles leading tackler last season as he amassed 130 on the season, as a defensive back. He's also one of the fastest player in the country as he competes in the Seminoles Triple Jump competiton as well and reportedly has run a sub 4.3 time as well. The former Five-Star out of Toccoa, GA has been stated by several players he's become the unquestioned leader for the team this season.

"He's a high IQ guy that has even higher athletic ability. He's changed his mindset from last season to this season. He's been the first to practice every game and the last to leave. He's worked extremely hard this spring" said Head Coach Cameel Verner.

                      DEFENSE FOCUSES ON PRESSURE

George Phillips has gained all the praise for his dominant offseason efforts

The Seminoles ranked dead last in the ACC last season in sacks. This year, they hope that changes. With the emergence of George Phillips, the Noles seem to have found the edge rush presence they lacked so badly last year. But newly appointed Defensive Coordinator says it's going to have to be a "committee" of players to get after the QB, not just Phillips.

"Our biggest focus this off-season was how to not only get after the Quarterback, but how to dominate the line of scrimmage. Once you control the Line of Scimmage, everything else defensively sort of just falls into place. Because it starts up front. That's where it starts. And that was the unanimous plan this off-season, was to be very disruptive up front." said Dukes

While the main focus has been Phillips, the Noles feel they have the players who can also help him create havoc up front.

                      PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: LB JAMAR SYKES

LOOKING TO BUILD IN YEAR 2

Sophomore LB Jamar Sykes was Defensive MVP of last years Spring Game
Jamar Sykes had a very successful Freshman campaign. He finished his Freshman year as a reserve with 25 tackles with an interception and two forced fumbles. This season, he has the opportunity to gain a starting spot in only his second full season playing Linebacker. In High School, Sykes was a hard hitting Safety, and his nose for the ball caught the eye of the Noles staff.

"He always flew to the ball. We loved his intensity. He plays with so much emotion. He was a guy I immediately knew would be a locker room favorite no matter what school he decided on. " said Cameel Verner

                      High School Tape

                      High School Profile

Sykes now has the opportunity to secure a starting role as the Noles "Bandit"(OLB), and his athletic ability is something the staff covets at that position. He's also added 10 pounds from last season bulking up to 225 which should help him tremendously.

"He's very rangy, and fills gaps fearlessly. He has the ability to cover Tight Ends as backs also. He's got plenty of room to grow but he's definitely ahead of the curve from a position switch stand point." said DC Ryan Dukes

The Noles prepare for their annual Spring Game on tomorrow. More details of the Spring Game to be released. Stay tuned for more coverage

                        SPRING GAME

                        GARNET v GOLD
                        2:00 PM/ET Doak Campbell Stadium

The Spring comes to an end with the annual Garnet and Gold game in Tallahassee. Before the game we will highlight the keys to watch in the Garnet and Gold game that may help us forecast what to expect in the fall. The Noles came into the Spring with several concerns that looked to be addressed. By the end of the game, we hope to have a clearer understanding of the answers.

                        GARNET TEAM

                        GOLD TEAM

Since Cameel Verner has taken over at Florida State, every Spring the Nole's Gold team sports the rare Gold jerseys to represent the Gold team. In previous years, the "Gold" team typically wore White. Verner decided to change the narrative, and have the Seminoles wear all Gold to create a more atmospheric Garnet/Gold Game. Per usual, the Garnet team will also wear all Garnet.

                        THINGS TO WATCH

                        1. QUARTERBACK PLAY

The Noles currently have 5 scholarship Quarterbacks on it's roster, which has gotten a ton of attention over the course of the Spring. With the abysmal Quarterback play the Noles had last season, fans are grasping for any hope of positivity from that position. The once thought glaring weakness of the Seminole team, possibly could be a strength with the emergence of Sophomore Sha'Dar Walker, and former Five-Star Freshman Terry Washington. The Seminoles are hoping one of the Five Quarterbacks take over and help elevate an extremely talented skill group for the Noles this season. So the question during the Spring Game will be, which Quarterback of the 5 will look the most impressive? Everyone awaits for that answer.

                        2. WILL WE SEE OFFENSIVE LINE IMPROVEMENT?

The Noles Offensive Line unit ranked as one of the worst units in all of College Football. Offensive Line coach Harry Hiestand vowed fans would see improvement from the OL this off-season. This would be the first eye test for fans to test that theory. With a year under his belt, he's been able to work with the Noles maticulously to correct a ton of errors from last season.

                        3. WILL THE DEFENSE GENERATE PASS RUSH

A bit contradictory, we may not be able to see if the either will come to fruition this Spring. The Offensive Line unit struggled to protect the Quarterback last year, and the Defensive Line struggled to generate consistent pressure against opposing Quarterbacks last season also. So the spring may not be a tale of all tales of which unit has progressed this offseason. If one outshines the other, we won't know if that's progression or regression until week one. However, we still can take it as a grain of salt and hope for the best either way.

                        4. HOW WILL THE NOLES ADJUST TO A NEW STYLE OF OFFENSE?

New Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser enters his first season as the Noles OC, and changed the entire philosophy of offense for the Seminoles. They will transition from a Spread team, to a Pro Style team. We've heard glaring reviews all spring on how the Noles have accepted the change, we now will get to see it first hand. The Noles have a roster full of Pass Catch-First Tight Ends, how will they adapt to having to consistently being physical in the run game? How will the Quarterbacks transition to new mechanics? How will the Noles offense as a whole transition? This is one thing to keep an eye on during the Spring.

                        5. HAS THE DEFENSE IMPROVED FROM A DISMAL SEASON?

The Noles ranked as one of more maligned teams last season. In the passing game the Noles gave up six 300 yard passing performances, with four of them being 400 yard performances. The Noles also could not consistently generate a pass rush to help out the back end of their defense. So all in all, the Noles were a below average Defense that were able to make stops in certain games when needed to win. However, that lack luster effort on defense kept the Noles out of contention for a College Football Playoff, as well as a loss to Duke in the ACC Championship game. The Noles seem to have a better attitude towards this year, and will attempt to fix the error in their ways to become a better unit.

                          SPRING GAME BREAKDOWN

The Seminoles came in with a myriad of questions looming from last season that fans hope to get a glimpse of an answer from this game. We got a few answers, but it appears most won't be fully answered until the fall. But we do have a few topics to dissect.

                          QUARTERBACK POSITION STILL UNCERTAIN

The biggest question of the Spring up to this point was which Quarterback would separate themselves from the pack to lead the Noles this fall. There were glaring reviews of Sha'Dar Walker and his knowledge of the offense and what was expected of him from the philosophy change. We also heard good things about Clay Tillman as well. However, if the Spring Game is any inclination of what's to come, well we are still unsure of what's to come.

                          Sha'Dar Walker 7/14 108 yds, 2 Int, 4 Rushes 43 yds
                          Clay Tillman 11/22 144 yds, 1 TD
                          Terry Washington 7/13 62 yds, 2 Int, 3 Rushes 20 yds
                          B.J. McDaniel 4/6 34 yds, 1 Int
                          Ko'Dallas Avery 1/4 14 yds, 1 int, 2 Rushes 26 yds 1 TD

None of the Seminoles Quarterbacks were overwhelmingly impressive. However, Clay Tillman probably had the best day of any Quarterback as a passer. But, we were able to see glimpses of what coaches raved about in Walker's ability. Walker escaped a number of sacks with his athletic ability, and gave the Noles an added dimension as a run threat when the play breaks down.

Terry Washington also was pretty impressive albeit the two turnovers. But he was pressured more than any of the other Quarterbacks in the game as well. Ko'Dallas Avery is an absolute terror as a runner but needs a bit more polish as a passer. B.J. McDaniel is still an accurate passer as he's always been, but his biggest issue since he's been in a Seminole uniform is his tendency to turn the ball over, and that trend continued with his pick 6 he threw to DB Jose Rodriguez.

"I think all of our Quarterbacks showed what they can do for us this season. We have a very good group of guys to work with. I liked a lot of things that I saw. I really did. They managed the game very well and did a lot of good things out there. As a staff we still have some things we need to work on, but overall i'm extremely pleased on what I saw today" said Offensive Coordinator Hayden Kiser.

OFFENSIVE LINE A TALE OF TWO STRINGS

The staff decided to use the 1st and 2nd string units of the Offensive Line for the Spring game. And we saw a major difference in the two units. The 1st string unit was used on the Gold team. And the Quarterbacks often had plenty of time in the pocket as opposed to last season which is a huge sign of progress for Noles fans. The much maligned unit took the brunt of the criticsm for the Noles offensive woes last season. But in the Spring game the unit look much improved.

However, the second string unit who was on the Garnet team did not look as impressive. They gave up multiple sacks and hurries, much of the same of what we saw a season ago. However, OL Coach Harry Hiestand believes the unit as a whole has improved tremendously.

"It wasnt perfect" he said. "But we looked good in pass pro. We have somethings to work out running the ball. I wasn't pleased with our run block effort. It was a shoddy effort. It's something we will fix" he said

The Noles leading rusher on either side on the day that wasn't a Quarterback was Trey Wright with 27 yards. But he needed 17 carries to get those 27 yards. As a whole, the Running Backs averaged 1.6 yards per carry. Which Cameel Verner knows that won't get them the results they need to achieve the goals they've set forth.

"We won't win many games if we can't run the football that's for sure. I'm proud of our defense, filling gaps, playing assignment football. That's what we've preached this spring. But we have to run the football better. " said Head Coach Cameel Verner

                          CHRIS BROWN STEALS THE SHOW

The one that players call "Match up Nightmare" showed why. He had the overall best day of any player. Brown finished the game with 6 catches for 116 yards.

"He really is a freak. I've tried telling guys for months he's crazy. " said Gold QB Sha'Dar Walker

"If the ball is near him, he's going to bring it in" he added.

Brown is an imposing figure standing at 6'4" , 214 pounds. And was clocked at 4.37 in the 40. With today's performance, it's clear that he is ready to be one of the Noles top receivers in the fall.

"He's been working his tail off this spring. He's been in the weight room, he's been doing a lot of field work, he's just been doing a lot. And I'm happy for him up to this point. He waited his turn and he's determined to not let it go to waste" said Cameel Verner

                          DEFENSIVE LINE DOMINATES

Defensive Coordinator Ryan Dukes preached dominating the line of scrimmage. And it seems he has the Noles defense on the same page as him following the Spring game.

"I'm so proud of how both sides played today. Both teams. We did a heck of a job of dominating the line of scrimmage. If we do our jobs up front it's a domino effect. Everything else falls into play." said Dukes.

The defense only allowed a game high of 27 rushing yards, including an average of 1.6 yards per carry from Running Backs. The defense also forced 6 turnovers. But the only blemish of the afternoon was the containment of Quarterbacks which Dukes says must be addressed.

"We have some very elusive guys behind center on our team. So if we contain them, we can contain mostly anyone else in the country. We have to be able to contain mobile quarterbacks. Walker and Avery got loose a couple of times there. We have to gain control of that." said Dukes

The other bright side of the equation was seeing the Noles generate a pass rush. And Senior DE Robert Tate was able to generate 3.5 sacks on the day while lining up against Freshman All-American Synnquan Evans who hasn't allowed a Collegiate sack yet.

"I was proud of the effort from Tate. I knew he had that kind of motor in him since he's enrolled and now it seems the light bulb has finally turned on for him." said Cameel Verner

Tate, a 6'4" 282 pound Senior, opted to return for his Senior year after being eligible for the NFL Draft. He didn't get the grade he was looking for and wanted to come back to earn a better one.

"They told me I had a 6th round grade. I said No way I'm a 6th rounder. That's just how I felt. So my family thought it was best for me to come back and prove them wrong." said Tate.

"This season is personal for me and my brothers this season. We fell short last year, this year won't be the same." he said.

RS SO QB B.J. MCDANIEL ENTERS TRANSFER PORTAL

McDaniel started 3 games for the Noles last season

                                MORE NOLES ENTER PORTAL

RS JR DE Joe Terrell is no longer apart of the program.

The off-season attrition continues in Tallahassee as three more Seminoles have left the program. Redshirt Junior DE Joe Terrell, Senior OG Sanderson Hall, and Redshirt Junior Defensive Lineman Chris Weiss all have entered the transfer portal. With the three veteran lineman opting to leave, that gives the Noles a total of 6 players that have entered the portal since the end of Spring Camp.

Sanderson Hall was the highest rated lineman recruited in the 2029 class but his career up to this point hasn't lived up to the billing. He's started in 15 games but eventually lost his starting position to Redshirt Sophomore Anthony Branch. Both Joe Terrell, and Chris Weiss up to this point have been reserves. However, Weiss had a very strong Spring Game a few weeks ago and finally showed a bit of promise going into the Fall.
