GAME RECAP
The Irish/Panther Rematch didn't disappoint as both teams battle each other down to the final seconds yet again in another epic battle for the National Title.
Tavon Logan capped a historic season with his 50th TD of the season to get things going early as FIU took the (7-0) lead. The Panther Defense held Notre Dame to a 34 yd FG on the following series to make it (7-3)..
FIU then drove the length of the field getting the ball down to the 3 yd line before facing a tough decision on whether to kick the FG or try for the score.
Coach Miller left the offense on the field, as Zach Wire took the snap and rolled to his right firing a pass intended for TE Dominik Naanee but JR CB Bradley Grymes (86) was there picking off the pass and turning the INT into a "Pick 6" as he races 96 yds to the opposite endzone to give the Irish the (10-7) lead .
FIU was forced to punt on the following series setting up another Notre Dame FG as they extend their lead to (13-7). Wire would then throw his 2nd INT of the game after taking a 8 yd sack that left FIU facing a 3rd and 18. The Panther D would hold the Irish to a 3rd FG though making it (16-7) with just under 2 minutes to play in the half.
Still armed with all 3 timeout. Coach Miller knew they would need to play smart . After a 1st down run went for no gain. FIU facing a 2nd and 10 from the 20 yd line, Norte Dame makes a huge mistake as they send the blitz leaving Brian Cheek 1 on 1 on the outside and Wire delivers a perfect deep pass as Cheek takes it 80 yds to the house to make it (16-14) at the half.
Notre Dame opened up the 2nd half with the ball but a quick 3 and out gave FIU the ball and Wire still feeling pumped from his 80 yd bomb to Cheek leads a 8 play drive that ends with a 22 yd pass to SR Faitele Okwara as FIU takes the lead (21-16)
It was then the Panther D coming up with a huge play as JR CB Joey Cordero picks off ND JR QB Daniel Linnenkohl (83) setting up a Taj Dozier FG that gives FIU the lead (24-16) as we head to the 4th.
Linnenkohl would bounce back from his INT as he hits WR Manu Guzman (87) on a pair of pass's including 29 yd long that sets the Irish up inside the 20 yd line. Then 2 plays later he finds RB Trae Gossett out of the backfield for a 16 yd score to make it (24-22).
Notre Dame would leave the Offense on the field to try and tie the game but RS FR Garrison Falah comes up with a huge stop as Linnenkolh is stopped short on the QB keeper.
Now it was Notre Dame's turn to get a big stop and they did as they force Dozier out for 2nd FG of the day this time from 45 yd. He drills it making it (27-22) with less then 4 minutes to play in the game.
A touchdown could give Notre Dame the lead and Coach Miller knew that putting the ball in Wire's hands to win it in the final minute wasn't really his ideal finish.. Lucky for him it wasn't. The Panther D comes up with a huge sack as Notre Dame is faced with a tough decision with 1:48 to play in the game facing a 4th and 18, the Irish send out the FG unit as they make it (27-25).
Coach Miller not taking any chances puts the hands team out just incase the Irish try for the onside kick, but armed with 2 of their timeouts remaining. The Irish kick deep.
The Panthers would look to run out the clock but back to back runs left them facing a 3rd and 4. Wire would have to pass.
Wire dropped back and found JR Tyler Cisco on a crossing pattern... 1st Down Panthers....
The Irish out of timeouts were left to watch FIU lined up in the victory formation...
As the Celebration dies down ESPN sideline reporter got a chance to speed to RB Tavon Logan who was named the games MVP. What his future holds. His response "I still got work to do"
With 5048 yds and 67 TD's over 2 seasons, one can only think the work that Logan still has left is to chase down the National Rushing Record held by SDSU Donnel Pumphrey (6405 yds) and the Rushing TD record held by Navy's Keenan Reynolds (88).
