    GAME RECAP

Coach Matt Miller is officially 7-0 vs FAU has he leads FIU to their 7th Shula Bowl victory.. This game was alot closer then the 20 point victory would make it look.

FIU opened up the scoring with their longest rushing touchdown of the season as Shawn Boyce breaks one for 18 yds to make it (7-0). FAU would get on the scoreboard picking off Derek Hawkins as Tucker Manhertz takes the INT back 16 yds for the "Pick 6" to make it (7-7).

Boyce though would run in his 2nd TD of the day with a 2 yd run to give the Panthers the (14-7) at the end of the 1st Quarter.

FAU opened up the 2nd Quarter scoring with a huge 76 yd bomb from JR QB T. Grymes (77) to FR WR Branden Kaufusi (73) to tie the game up (14-14) Another Hawkins INT would lead to a Warren Dahl 5 yd TD run as FAU took the lead (21-14) with 8 minutes to play in the half. FAU leaning on a run game that finally found itself ties the game up as Shawn Boyce scores his 3rd TD of the day with another short 2 yd run (21-21).

SO CB Cordale Ryder comes up with a huge INT of Grymes to setup a 11 yd touchdown from Hawkins to Dom Meeks as Meeks has now scored in 3 straight games to make it (28-21) with 1:11 to play in the half.

FIU assumed FAU would just run out the clock to end the half but the Owls go to the air and and quick 3 and out gives the Panthers the ball back with 28 seconds to play as FAU tacks on a 41 yd FG as time expires to make it (31-21) at the half.

FAU opened up the 2nd half with the ball but would turn the ball over on downs. RB Shawn Boyce however would fumble the ball on a run up the middle giving the Owls new life as FAU cuts the lead to (31-28) with a Shakir Edwards 1 yd run.

But with 24 seconds to play in the 3rd, Shawn Boyce would make up for his earlier fumble with his 4th TD of the day (2 yds) as FIU extends the lead back to 10 (38-28) as we had to the 4th.

FAU would turn the ball over 4 times on downs in the 4th Quater as they go 0/4 on 4th downs. The Panthers would convert 2 of those into points as FB Kwabena Strong scores his 1st TD of the season with a 1 yd run and then with 1:14 to play in the game Taj Dozier connects on a 42 yd FG after missing a 53 yd attempt early in the quarter.

FAU QB Tim Grymes finished the game 10/18 (55%) for 178 yds with the 1 TD and 1 INT. SR RB Warren Dahl had 26 carries for 87 yds and 1 TD in the loss as well.

For Shawn Boyce it was a coming out party as he gave Panthers glimpses of the past. Boyce was named POG and ACC Player of the Week as he rushes for a career high 197 yds with 4 TD.

I wish. The Dude is a Roller Coaster.. 31 attempts (38%) completion against FAU with 2 more INT including another Pick 6. I actually put McCrae in late in the 4th but he was 0/2..

The 0-Line is not great. He was only sacked twice but he had like 8 other throws were he was hit as he released resulting in throws into the grass.

Lucky for me Boyce finally broke lose and had some nice runs that were not brought back by the Zebra's.

I don't know what it is about the sim engine, but ill go through stretches where any run to the outside is a holding call for two or three games in a row. Then they go down to maybe 2 or 3 a game for a long stretch. I've tried not sliding the line, not hitting the sprint button, not switching the direction of the run presnap or not cutting back during the play, no matter what if its "one of those" games they'll throw the flag smh

Good news is the running game finally broke through against FIU even with the penalties, just need Hawk to get that comp % up

            GAME RECAP

Derek Hawkins roller coaster season continues. The SO QB looked like solid at times completing 60% of his pass's on the day and throwing for over 300 yds with a nice 27 yd TD to RS FR Walter Abiamiri to open up the scoring late in the 1st Quarter (7-0), but Hawkins also struggled throwing 4 INT's on the day including a "Pick 6" in the 3rd Quarter which in turn was the only touchdown of the day by the Scarlet Knights.

The FIU Panther Defense only came up with 1 turnover on the day as SR DE Martin Phenix forces a fumble and comes up with the lose ball, but they didn't have to as they held Rutgers to just 150 yds of Total Offense including just 29 104 yds passing and just 9 1st downs on the day.

With the FIU passing game struggling FIU turned to the run game as Shawn Boyce posts back to back games with 100+ yds finishing the day with 110 yds and 2 TD's on 15 carries (7.3 avg). FB Kwabena Strong had another solid day as the power back carrying the ball 9 times for 56 yds (6.2 avg) well also punching in 2 short scores, and #2 RB Terrance Cantwell looked good with 2 carries for 39 yds (19.5 avg)

With the Big lead going into the 4th, Coach Miller put in backup QB Greg "Mac" McCrae as Hawkins hit the showers early, but the Big (6'5) Lefty didn't fare much better as he completes just 6/11 (54%) throwing a INT as well.

            KEY PANTHERS

            QB D. Hawkins-21/35 (60%) 327 yds 1 TD 4 INT

              GAME RECAP

FIU lost only 1 ACC game last year and it was to the Yellowjackets. But the Panthers got their revenge today dominated Georgia Tech taking a (35-7) lead into the 4th.

Derek Hawkins was perfect today but he did enough to help FIU win the game as he throws 4 TD's including a pair to Cincinnati transfer Dom Meeks who continues to be a great addition to the team as WR1. The 60 yd Hawkins to Meeks bomb late in the 3rd Quarter would be the last play for both players as Coach Miller gave the 2nd string unit plenty of P.T. today playing the entire 4th Quarter.

Backup QB Greg McCrae continues to struggle as Mac throws a INT looking for Godwin in the corner of the endzone. The Zebras however make a huge calling SR CB D. Lashley (84) out at the 1 yd line.. The FIU Panther D would rush 8 as they stop the Yellow Jackets in the endzone for the 2pt safety early in the 4th.

With the Panthers firmly ahead, backup RB Terrance Cantwell got a career high 8 carries finishing with 59 yds (7.3 avg) as FIU rushes for 141 yds on the day.

              KEY PANTHERS

              QB D. Hawkins-15/33 (45%) 348 yds 4 TD 1 INT, 2 carries 21 yds

              UP NEXT

FIU remains at #2 in the rankings as they move to 5-0 this week.. The Panthers will have their 1st "Bye" of the season in Week 6 returning to action in Week 7 as they host Maryland.

              HEISMAN WATCH

He might not be Tavon Logan, but JR RB Shawn Boyce is doing his bet impersonation, as Boyce jumps into the Heisman talk after a slow start to the season.

Boyce through 5 games now has 71 carries for 442 yds (6.8 avg) and 8 TD's well also adding 10 rec for 146 yds and 1 TD.

Last I was told, Hawkins was just signed a new NIL deal with Busch Gardens.. they are naming a Roller Coaster after him, and it's funny you mention Puke cause the ride has 8 complete loops and a huge deadman drop that has already caused over 50% of it's riders to vomit. They just call the ride "The Hawk"..

                          GAME RECAP

Coming off their first "Bye Week" of the season, the FIU Panther offense looked out of sort as QB Derek Hawkins continues to struggle with basic throws.

FIU opened the game with a nice 9 play drive ending in a 6 yd TD run by Shawn Boyce to make it (7-0), but Maryland would answer back with a double digit drive taking up pretty much the rest of the 1s Quarter as they tie the game (7-7) as SO RB Ralph Redman (76) runs in from 3 yds out.

A Hawkins INT would give Maryland the ball right back and SR QR Noah McAlister (82) quickly finds SO WR Mitchell Bernstein (80) on a 24 yd strike to make it (14-7).

A forced punt on the Panthers next series would lead to the Terps taking a (21-7) as McAlister leads another 10 play drive ending in a 4 yd TD pass to JR TE Dave Jansen (84).

FIU would get the ball back with 2:12 to play.. Coach Miller called for a run to the outside by Boyce on the opening play and the JR RB delivered taking it 29 yds for his longest run of the day and 6 plays later, Hawkins finds TE Earl Godwin on a 11 yd strike to make it (21-13). Coach Miller made a interesting call as he leaves the offense on the field for the 2pt play but Hawkins is hit in the backfield as FIU goes into the locker room down by 8.

Maryland opened up the 2nd half with the ball but after moving the ball to midfield the drive stalled as they were forced to punt. Hawkins still struggling would miss a key 3rd down throw forcing FIU to settle for a Dozier FG to make it (21-16). FIU then got a lucky break as McAlister trying to gain a 1st down stretched for the 1st down but instead fumbled the ball SS George Moeung comes up with the Force and Recovery.

FIU though would again settle for a Dozier FG after a failed 3rd and 2 run by Boyce as the Panthers make it (21-19) heading into the 4th.

The 2nd half continued to belong to the Panther D. After watching Maryland convert on a 4th down, FIU comes up with it's 2nd turnover as SO CB Cordale Ryder comes up with the INT and 1 play late Hawkins hits RS FR Montrel Muamba for a 62 yd bomb as FIU takes the lead (26-21) with 4:47 to play in the game.

Maryland trailing by 5 would need a touchdown to win but again after keeping their drive alive with their 2nd 4th down conversion of the day, Maryland is forced to punt with 2:58 to play as many question the call by the Maryland HC.

FIU not looking to take any chances would go to their run game as they work valuable time off the clock... Maryland lost their chance for the upset.. But despite the win, FIU was left with alot of questions about their future moving forward.

McAlister finished the game 19/27 (70%) for 230 yds with the 2 TD and 1 INT. He also led the Terps in rushing with 15 carries for 61 yds but also had the fumble.

FIU moves to 6-0 and retains their #1 ranking going into their Week 8 matchup vs NC State. The Wolfpack enter the game (2-4) on the season and just (1-3) in ACC play..

                            INTERVIEW WITH COACH MILLER

Welcome to our Week 8 Podcast brought to your by Paw's Up. Today we are joined by Head Coach Matt Miller as we talk Panther Football..

Reporter- Coach Miller let me, first give you congratulations. You are off to another great start to another great season.. #1 in the rankings 6-0 Overall and 4-0 in ACC play.. I know you have said it in the past, you don't like to look ahead of toward any future opponent but instead focus on just the Week in front of you, but I have to ask is that hard to do when your next 2 opponents are (2-4) well Miami is off to a (5-1) start and at this point looks to be the only other team really challenging you this year for a potential ACC crown?

Miller- First let me say "Thanks"..We are not playing our best football and have gotten lucky at times I feel like this season, so with that said. No.. I can't look ahead because a (2-4) NC State or (2-4) Syracuse has alot of motivation to be the team that stops our perfect season.

Reporter-Coach I have to bring him up because it's hard not to talk about the amazing career Tavon Logan had the past 3 seasons, but with that said give us your take on RB Shawn Boyce. We had hear multiple reports multiple times (sims ahead to look at potential jobs) that Boyce was going to hit the Transfer Portal, yet he is here and not only is he here, but he is having his won Heisman type season.

Miller- Yeah i honestly don't know. I talked to Shawn several times. Each time I reminded him, I was the guy at his house telling him how much we wanted him here at FIU.. When we signed him, myself and the rest of the staff saw him as someone we thought we could pair with Tavon to have a Thunder and Lighting type combo like USC did with Reggie Bush and Lendale White. We had Titus Tompkins as well and Tompkins was a year ahead and just outplayed him in the spring which led us to redshirting him.. Then Logan just took off and took over RB1, pushing Tompkins to the reserve role. We then got the kid from Duke in the Portal and Shawn just kept sorta sliding down the depth chart. I understood his frustrations and I told him I wouldn't stand in his way if he wanted to hit the portal. But I am not going to lie I am glad he didn't.

Reporter- Coach.. I have to ask. How much longer can Derek Hawkins keep QB1 with the way he is playing?

Coach Miller-I get it.. Trust me I don.. You see the box scores and you see games with multiple INT's or even last week where he completed just 38% of his pass's for less then 200 yds. But people forget. Derek is a True Sophomore. He started all 16 games for us last year and led us to a (14-2) record and to a spot in the National Championship game.. Yes he frustrates me at times but he is not shy about his play style.. He is a Improviser and sometimes Improvisers make bad calls.. If I had compare him to someone I would say he is alot like a Baker Mayfield type QB. I think when we find the right offensive system for him, he is going to be something special. But right now it's up to me and to Coach Dobbs to find that right offensive system to best take advantage of the skills that Hawk has.

Reporter- Coach. I still got to ask, With Hawkins currently issues and backup Greg McCrae having his own struggles (7/16 43%, 113 yds 2 INT). Any chance we see 5* Kevin Pounds come off his redshirt this season?

Miller- I am not going to say 100%, Kevin doesn't play this year.. We have 4 games available to us. With Wake Forest and WVU both struggling and having to play us at home in Week 12 and 13, we would potentially bring Pounds in and let him see what he could do..

Reporter- Coach we are being told this week that another current 5* QB Recruit you are going after in this year's class (Jaden Nagy) just signed somewhere else.. Can you go into details about what happened in Recruiting this week.

Miller-Yeah.. We had Jaden on Campus back in Wee 4 for our win over Rutgers. We had a nice long talk and well we offered alot of things Jaden was looking for (Championship Contender), early playing time was very high on his list and honestly I think with already having Hawkins and Pounds on the team it scared him away. I knew that Boise State was right on our tails sitting #2 on his list and I also know BSU has 5* Donnie Sorensen set to graduate this season.. They got a couple of great young QB's already on their roster too (RS SO M Sawyer-81 ovr and RS FR T. Savioe-81 ovr) but I got the call this week.. I know he is headed to Boise..

Reporter. Coach.. Nagy wasn't the only 5* you lost this week. But we also know you landed a pretty big signing this week too. Can you give the listeners some news..

Miller- For sure.. Yeah we lost out on 5* DE Ricky McCarthy (#7 Overall/#1 TN/#1 DE).. We had Ricky in this week for the win over Maryland.. Everything looked good. He told us we were #1 and then the next day we get a conformation that he has given his verbal to Arkansas. I guess the SEC was just to big of a draw to him.. But at the same time we also got a call this week that 6'6 255lb TE Cam Coxie (#44 Overall/#4 TN/#1 ATH) his teammate is joining us.. We honestly thought they were going to be a package deal.. I knew Georgia and Tenneesee both had Coxie high on their want list, so we are excited to land him.

Reporter- Coach I know you take pride in the fact you recruit instate kids to FIU and for year's your forcus has been almost 100% Florida Recruits.. This year you really branched out with 16 of your Top-25 targets coming outside the state of Florida.. How hard was it to hear that you missed out on 2 instate kids including 5* OLB Stan Artmore Florida's Gatorade POY (#1 FL).

Miller- We have a great OLB core this year. We really do.. I like our LB room alot, but for us 5* Stan Artmore (#14 Overall/#1 FL/#1 OLB (Bradenton FL) and Joe Craft (#80 Overall/#8 FL/#6 OLB) from Fort Lauderdale were both guy's we really wanted.. We saw both of them as potential 4 year starters for us. We knew Artmore had like 14 offers and we knew the SEC was a big draw so when he announced Alabama it hurt but it was somewhat expected. Craft on the other hand ew knew he wanted to stay close to home.. He told us from the get go. We were #1, Miami was #2, FSU was #3... He visited in Week 6 and when he left, he told me he had a Week 13 visit scheduled with the Hurricanes, so we felt we had a good chance and convincing him to skip that visit.. But then he called his week.. He is going to be a Cane. I reminded him God doesn't like Cane's, and told him I looked forward to making him regret his decision.. It stings, but that's the nice thing about "W's" they make you forgot about all the loss's..

Reporter-- Well Coach we are out of time but thanks for joining us.. We look forward to having you on again maybe in Week 10 during the "Bye".

Miller- Yep sounds good.. Thanks again for having me..

                                GAME RECAP

After coming off their worst offensive outing of the season scoring (26 points) in their win over Maryland, FIU came out and the offense exploded for their highest output of the season in their win this week over the Wolfpack.

FIU would rack up a season high 303 yds on the ground scoring 4 times including a beautiful 8 yd run by QB Derek Hawkins for his 1st career rushing TD.

NC State came out and dominated most of the 1st Quarter as SR QB Rick Hamm showed off his arm completing 7/7 pass's and his legs rushing for 22 yds including a 6 yd TD run to put the Wolfpack up (7-0).

FIU would respond with their best passing attack of the season as Hawkins goes 4/5 on the opening drive including a 13 yd TD pass to 5'9 Montrel Muamba to tie the game (7-7).

NC State would continue to work the short passing game over the middle trying to work against FIU's new 3-4 Defense and it worked as Hamm completes 14 straight before finally throwing a incomplete pass, but the Wolfpack's drive would stall and they were forced to punt.. Hawkins would give the ball right back with yet another INT, but the Panther D bails him out yet again as SR MLB Soni Yoon comes up with a INT to give Hawkins a 2nd chance... Hawkins wouldn't get his chance though on the next series as FIU instead uses just 3 runs to go 78 yds for the score including a 38 yd run by Terrance Cantwell to make it (14-7).. The FIU D would then force a quick 3 and out and Hawkins would go to work completing 3 pass's to setup a 1st and goal. Facing a 3rd and goal from the 8, Hawkins dropped back to pass but instead makes the play with his feet.. Hawkins spun out of what looked like a sure sack, and saw a wide open field ahead as the SO QB tucks the ball and runs in for his 1st career rushing TD to make it (21-7) with less then 2 minutes to play in the half.

FIU wasn't done though.. Armed with all 3 timeout, FIU would force a NC State Punt as FIU takes over at the 50 line after a short punt. Coach Miller called for a outside run with Boyce and the JR RB delivered a nice 27 yd gain before stepping out of bounds. Hawkins then delivered a strike to Cincy transfer Dom Meeks for his 2nd passing TD of the day to make it (28-7) at the half.

NC State got the scoring going midway through the 3rd as Hamm throws a 53 yd bomb to SO Larry Ansah (78) to make it (28-14) but that would be it for the Wolfpack today.

FIU answers back scoring twice as Hawkins finds former 5* Emari Boenzi for a 11 yd score and then with 2:23 to play in the 3rd it was FB Kwabena Strong taking the handoff and doing his best "Wolverine impression running over 4 defenders on his way to a 20 yd touchdown as FIU takes a (42-14) lead into the 4th.

Despite the 4 score lead, Dan Hawkins wasn't done working, as the SO QB connects on a 10 yd pass curl pass to RS FR Walter Abiamiri who does the rest spinning and out running the entire Wolfpack Defense 70 yds for the 80 yd score as FIU extends their lead (49-14).

Now Hawkins was done, but to our surprise it wasn't RS SO Greg McCrae coming in when the FIU offense retook the field as RS FR Kenyon Angerer makes his debut. Angerer would spend his firs series just handing off to Boyce and Cantwell as Cantwell breaks another 20+ yd run for a touchdown to make it (56-14) still with almost 8 minutes to play in the game.

FIU not looking to try and embarrass their opponent would slow things down as they punt on their next 2 series before Angerer get's his series to try and run the offense. Angerer would complete 2/5 pass's on the drive for 22 yds as he helps setup a Taj Dozier 46 yd FG..

NC State's Rick Hamm finished 25/34 (73%) for 291 yds with 1 TD and 1 INT despite being sacked 7 times, he still managed to net 70 yds rushing with 1 TD. JR RB Thomas Linder added 11 carries for 72 yds as well.
