PANTHERS ADD 3 5* RECRUITS BUT DO THEY REALLY NEED THEM!!

FIU went 4/7 this week in Recruiting landing a Trio of 5* Recruits well also losing out on (4)- 4*'s including RB David Quintana..

FIU currently has 14 WR's on the roster including a combination of 8 Redshirt and true Freshman, 3 Soph's and 3 Juniors, meaning FIU won't lose a single one to graduation next year, but that didn't stop Coach Matt Miller from signing 2 of the best WR's in the country this week.

5* Devin Kennedy (#17 Overall/#2 TN/#1 WR), is 6'2 204lb from Franklin TN.. The #1 WR in this year's class had offers from Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama and Auburn.

Fellow 5* Edward Marshall (#23 Overall/#2 FL/#3 WR) is 6'4 208lbs from Zephyrhills FL. Like Kennedy there was no shortage of suitors for Marshall with Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, and Miami all offering.

      Coach Miller
"I know alot of people are questioning my decision to offer up 2 of what is probably a 15 scholarship class to a position we already are loaded with, but you can't tell me that adding 2 guy's who will play on Sunday's doesn't help make our team better. Our #1 CB is a former WR recruit and our backup SS is another. We got some guy's currently redshirting that I believe can help us in other positions on our our teams, but I also believe that with the transfer portal it never hurts to be prepared in case you lose a guy you thought was coming back.."
Joining the 2 WR's this week is 5* MLB Chester Provo (#25 Overall/#3 FL/#2 MLB). Listed at 6'0 228lbs, Provo is a hometown kid from Miami.. Who held scholarships from Ole Miss, FSU, Alabama and the Hurricanes.

      Coach Miller
"With current starter Soni Yoon set to to graduate, we think Provo has the abilities to step in and be a Day 1 starter for us especially if we stay with the current 3-4 Defense we have been running for the past 3 weeks. "

RB David Quintana (#253 Overall/#36 FL/#24 RB) was the Panthers #1 RB target this year.. Listed at 5'11 225lbs from Opa Locka FL, Quintana was being hailed as the next potential "Wolverine" (Same exact size, only he has 91 speed as a high schooler). But Quintana had other plans, as he signs with the Canes and on paper even officially moved FSU to #2.

When FIU signed Provo, they ran off another MLB recruit as 4* Seth Wirtel (#36 Overall/#2 GA/#4 MLB) decides to sign with Florida

      Coach Miller
"We probably should've done a better job of trying to get "Q" on campus earlier in the year, but we had a Week 12 visit scheduled with him.. He went to FSU last week and that was when we heard they had moved past us, but we were shocked when he announced Miami as he wasn't scheduled to visit them until Week 13... I wasn't as surprised with Wirtel, and to be honest with you, with the limited amount of scholarships, we had considered pulling are offer"
      FIU also missed out on 4* DT DeMarco Childress (#40 Overall/#3 GA/#5 DT) and 4* RT Isaiah Brady (#193 Overall/#1 IA/#13 T)..

        loved the pod update.

Tell the media not to worry about the depth. If they can play, coach Miller will find a way to get em on the field.

WR and CB were the two positions I always try and load up on. Never know when you're going to find that gem that sky rockets in training and becomes a stud

          GAME RECAP

FIU coming off their best offensive outing of the season in a (59-14) win over over NC State, came out showcasing a new look once again as the Panthers exploded for a season high 63 points as QB Derek Hawkins puts the team on 1 shoulder as he sets a new FIU school record with 8 passing TD's in a game.

FIU opened up with the ball but a Hawkins INT would kill the opening drive allowing the Orange to take the early 7-0 lead as JR QB Steven Sheets (77) a Miami native hits JR WR Louis D'Imperio (78) on a 29 yd TD.

Hawkins would bounce back though throwing 3 touchdowns to close out the 1st Quarter as FIU takes a 2 score lead (21-7). Syracuse would open up the 2nd half with a 49 yd FG to cut the lead to (21-10) but Hawkins came our firing as the throws TD #4 to make it (28-10).. The Orange again would have to settle for a FG to make it (28-13) and again it was Hawkins coming out and firing touchdown #5 as Cincinnati transfer Dom Meeks finishes the 1st half with a hat trick with his 3rd TD of the day making it (35-13).

Syracuse opened up the 2nd half with the ball and as Sheets connects with SO WR Chester Felix (77) on a 68 yd bomb on just the 3rd play of the half to make it (35-19). Syracuse would leave the offense on the field as they looked to convert the 2pt play but the Panther D was ready as they stop Sheets in the backfield for 1 of 3 sacks on the day.

Derek Hawkins would start off where he left off, as the SO QB throws TD #6 hitting RS FR Emari Boenzi on a 79 yd bomb to extend the lead to (42-19).

Both teams would then struggle to mount any offense as we see both punters out to close out the 3rd Quarter with a pair of punts each.

FIU however would fire things right back up early in the 4th as Hawkins fires touchdown #7 hitting RS FR Montrel Muamba on a 26 yd strike making it (49-19). Trailing by 30, the Orange had to abandon their run game as Sheets fires a INT to FS Emmett Jean-Pierre. Despite the 30 point lead, FIU kept throwing the ball as Hawkins throws TD #8 hitting JR WR Kris Newkirk on a 19 yd strike to make it (56-19) with under 4 minutes to play.

Sheets would bounce back from his early INT by finding Chester Felix on another long touchdown (37 yds) as Syracuse cuts the lead to (56-26) with 2:48 to play.

One would wonder if Hawkins would lead the Panthers out for another series and the questioned was answered as #13 not only was still under center but he was still throwing, as he connects on a 53 yd bomb to Walter Abiamiri who is pushed out at the 10 yd line..

Facing a 1st and goal, Hawkins fired a pass intended for Meeks but the ball slips out of the hands of the Junior WR. On 2nd down Shawn Boyce took the handofff and managed a 3 yd gain to set up 3rd and goal from the 7. Most assumed Hawkins would pass as Syracuse brings out the Dime Defense, but Hawkins instead hands off to FB Kwabena Strong who takes it straight up the middle for the touchdown to make it (63-26).

FIU would get the ball back 1 more time with 43 seconds to play as Hawkins came out 1 more time After a 10 yd run by Boyce, Hawkins would take the snap and fire a bullet down the sideline intended for Newkirk on a 50/50 ball but SO SS Pat Sabri (76) is there for his 2nd INT of the game...

After the game we caught up to Coach Miller and asked about the late INT and why Hawkins was still throwing the football with such a big lead..

          Miller
"I knew that Hawk had surpassed Jenkins for TD's in a game however it was brought to my attention that he was still tied with Duke's Maalik Murphey (2024) who also had 8. So I gave him the greenlight to try and hit Kirk on the outside and see if we could get him #9. We were not trying to disrespect Syracuse but trying to reward one of our own for having such a great game"
Syracuse QB Ben Sheets finished the game 18/36 (50%) FOR 310 yds with the 3 TD and 1 Int. JR RB J. Mare (93 ovr) finished with 13 carries for 73 yds (5.6 avg) all coming in the 1st half..

          KEY PANTHERS

          QB D. Hawkins-28/52 (53%) 509 yds 8 TD 2 INT
          RB S. Boyce-15 carries 166 yds (11.1 avg), 2 rec 13 yds
          RB T Cantwell-3 carries 41 yds (13.7 avg)
          FB K. Strong-3 carries 17 yds 1 TD

            PAWS PART II

Welcome back to "Paws Up Part II", for another great week of talking Panther Football. We are once again joined by Coach Matt Miller.. I am your host Jake Gibson.

JG-Coach once again it's great to have you on the show. I hope your enjoying your week off.. You guy's have played your butt off these past 2 weeks averaging over 60 points a game.. Can you give us some inside knowledge on what changed?

Miller- Well Jake believe or not, we make a pretty big change to our playbook and our playcalling.. This off-season we made a under the radar hire as we brought back former Panther QB Clayton Dee's as a Offensive assistant, having him take over QB coaching duties from Coach Dobbins and allowing Coach Dobbs to take a bigger role making some adjustments to our play calling as he has more of a Air-Raid/Spread background from his days at ECU. Then after the Maryland game it was actually QB Derek Hawkins and Dees who came to us and said they had been working on some things in practice and wanted us to consider putting int in the playbook. Our playbook is pretty much Shotgun formation for 70% of the game especially on passing situations with a mix of 2 back sets and I-Form when we plan on running the ball.

Dee's mentioned it to us that Hawk pretty much played out of the Pistol like 90% of his snaps in high school it was suggest that maybe we add some Pistol into our playbook.. We talked it over with Hawk and he agreed.... So Coach Dobbs and I went and basically rewrote 50% of our playbook taking out probably 40% of our shotgun plays and replacing them with the Pistol.

Jake Gibson-- Wow.. It's not very often that a coach makes such a major change mid-season but with 12 TD's and 3 INT (really 2 if you don't count the last 50/50 ball) you can't argue with the success.. That bring up another point that was brough up this week.. It looks like you guy's also made a pretty major change on Defense sticking with what looks to be a 3-4 vs your traditional 4-2-6 we have seen you run since you got to FIU.

Miller-Yeah when I came here, I felt like the 4-2-6 was something I wanted to run. We had good success with it at Boise and alot more teams were running it. However this year we have had 2 things happen. We started the year off with a very talented LB group that we wanted on the field more often and we have been hit by injuries on the D-Line and secondary which has forced us to lean on those LB's even more...

Jake Gibson-Well again you can't argue with the success you are having. In the past 4 games teams are averaging less then 20 points a game against you. Can you go into some more detail about the injuries..

Miller-We typically don't include much of a injury report in our writeups as we don't want our opponents to know who is out, but we have been without SR DE Martin Phenix (Parctial ACL Tear) and CB Ryan Dickerson (Broken Hand) for the past 3 weeks and neither play at this point is going to return till probably the playoffs if that. We also lost FS A. Cookus (Dislocated Elbow) he is expected by by Week 13 and we also lost CB1 Garrison Falah (Broken Wrist).. He will most likely be back for Week 13 or 14 and hopefully be at full health for the ACC Championship game and playoffs.

Jake Gibson- That's a huge hit to the secondary.. I guess that's why we have seen more of SO Cordale Ryder..

Miller-Yeah Ryder has been playing great. He has 2 INT's in the past 3 games and leads the team with 3.. Liberty/FSU transfer Jose Marcino has gotten off to a slow start with the team (no INT's) but he is doing a pretty solid job allowing just 6 receptions against him this season..

Jake Gibson-Coach We got a few minutes left... It looks like it's been a rough couple of weeks with Recruiting.. Obviously fan's were excited about the (3) 5* signings a couple weeks ago, but word is you guy's have struck out on 4 more players this week including 3 more 5* prospects well landing just 1 player, bringing the Overall class to just 5 players going into Week 1.

Miller-. Yeah it's been rough but we knew targeting guy's outside of Florida and guy's ranked in the Top-25 meant we would have plenty of competition. Not just form schools like Miami, FSU, Florida, but now we are competing basically every team in the country. Let me first start by saying we have secured 4* MLB Avery Grubbs (#47 Overall/#4 FL/#5 MLB). Grubbs is a instate guy (Bradenton) and even though we had already signed Provo, we new we couldn't let a Top-50 player go somewhere else even it it is additional depth. Honestly either one of these guy's can probably bounce to the outside or we are also exploring a move for 1 of them potentially to SS to replace Mueong who made the switch last year from LB to SS.

Miller- Now let me get into the guy's we didn't sign.. 5* RT Fredrick Buck (#27 Overall/#1 NC/#2 RT) from Greensboro NC as a guy we really wanted but at the end of the day visits to Georgia and Clemson were just to much to compete with and he has officially signed with the Tigers.

5* FR Dillion Yeast (#12 Overall/#1 TX/#3 FS) we knew would be tough. Trying to land the Gatorade POY away from the Longhorns, Aggies, TTU ect is tough but we were actually surprised by who it was that beat us, as Dillion called and said we ended up his #2 as he gave his verbal to become a Houston Cougar..

Losing Yeast hurt but then we got double suckered punched when we learned 5* FS Jeremiah Faulk (#9 Overall/#1 CA/#1 FS) also was turning us down.. Again we assumed it would be the Cali schools or Oregon that would be our biggest competition but at the end of the day we beat them all until Notre Dame jumped in and offered a scholarship.. He told us that the Irish's facilities were just to amazing to pass up

Going 0/2 on FS's we then learned we lost out on another instate player as 4* CB Emmett Wire (#52 Overall/#6 FL/#5 CB) signed with Florida. We had Emmett to FIU back in Week 4 and I started to worry with both the Gators and Canes looked like they were passing us in his Top-3 list online. Then after a Week 9 visit to Gainesville we knew it was over..

Jake Gibson-Well Coach we are out of time, but would love to have you on again if you can make time.

Miller- For sure. Maybe we can make time in Week 13 during Senior Week. I would love for a chance to maybe even bring some of the guy's on the show if we can.

Jake Gibson-I would love that...Let's talk in a couple weeks.

              POLLS PUNISH PANTHERS FOR REST

Well the Week 10 "Bye" week might be nice for the players and coaches as they get a chance to rest up and prepare for their Big Top-25 matchup with the Cane's. The Ranking CPU didn't like it dropping FIU from #1 to #4 this week as the Top-25 moves away from the Media/Coaches Poll to the College Football Playoff rankings.

#2 (8-1) Alabama jumps to #1 this week with a (48-20) win over #14 Texas A&M. The Aggies now (5-3) on the year drop hard in the rankings going to #22 as they are watching their playoff hopes slip away week by week.

#3 (8-0) Oregon moves to #2 as the Ducks pickup a huge win over #11 USC (45-31) with the loss the Trojans drop to (6-2) on the year and #14 in the rankings.

#4 (7-1) Penn State moves to #3 this week after a (27-26) win over #10 Notre Dame this week.. With the loss the Irish are now (5-4) and drop completely out of the rankings as any hopes of a playoff spot is over.

#5 (7-1) Virginia Tech stays at #5 after a (37-34) win over East Carolina. The Hokies with the win improve to 6-0 in ACC play and are currently tied with Miami and FIU for the ACC lead.

#6 (6-2) Buffalo was a big loser this week as the Bulls drop their game (35-12) to Northwestern.. With the loss Buffalo is now ranked #19.

#9 (5-3) Clemson also is watching their playoff hopes die as they fall (52-31) to #20 Ole Miss. With the loss the Tigers drop to #17 well the Rebels move to #13 with the win.

Here is a look at the entire Top-25 rankings

              #1 (8-1) Alabama
              #2 (8-0) Oregon
              #3 (7-1) Penn State

                GAME RECAP

Coach Miller's and the FIU Panthers quest for a perfect regular season will have to wait another year, as FIU turns the ball over 3 times in the 2nd half and 4 in the game as the Panthers fail in their attempts to beat the Hurricanes and claim the title of "Miami Kings"

The loss is against Miami now makes Coach Miller (1-4) lifetime against the Canes with his lone victory coming last year.

A early Hawkins INT helped Miami jump out to a early (14-3) lead in the 1st Quarter but FIU battled back in the 2nd Quarter as Hawkins throws a 51 yd touchdown to Walter Abiamiri in the final seconds of the 1st half to cut the lead to (17-13).

FIU opened up the 2nd half with the ball but a Shawn Boyce fumble gives the ball to the Hurricanes on the 30 yd line and JR RB Isaac Gaskin (90)wasted no time extending the lead with a 30 yd td run to make it (24-13).

FIU was forced to punt on their next series which led to another Miami score as SO QB Legend Coffee (85) throws a 22 yd TD pass to SO WR D. Yancey (84) as Miami extends the lead to (31-13).

FIU would cut into the lead early in the 4th as Boyce breaks a 30 yd run for the score to make it (31-20). FIU would then hold the Hurricanes to a punt but Hawkins gives it right back as he throws his 2nd INT of the game..

The Panthers D would hold firm though holding the Canes to a 49 yd FG to make it (34-20) with 5:12 to play. Hawkins would connect on a trio of throws to push the ball past the 50 yd line before Boyce took over with a pair of runs to get the Panthers inside the 20 yd line as it looked like maybe FIU would get a quick score and still have a chance, but facing a 3rd and 8, Hawkins drops back to pass and is hit as he throws. The ball is ruled a fumble despite Coach Miller calling for the challenge as Miami takes over.

Miami not taking any chances would use a combination of a ground attack and short pass's to Gaskins as the Canes chew up the clock holding the ball for the final 3:58 of the game as FIU is left just to burn timeout after timeout as Miami grabs 5 straight 3d down conversions.

Gaskins was named POY as he finished with 11 carries for 55 yds and 2 TD, well also leading Miami with 6 rec for 76 yds.

Legend Coffee finished the game 25/35 (71%) for 241 yds with 1 TD and added 25 yds rushing and 1 TD as well.

                RECRUITING UPDATE

The Loss to Miami was a Double Whammy this week as FIU also loses out on their Final 2- 5* Recruits on their Big Board..

5* RT Iosefa Session (#1 Overall/#1 HI/#1 RT) has signed with USC, as FIU finishes #2 ahead of Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Texas.

                Coach Miller
"Yeah it feels good to finish ahead of those schools, but finishing #2 just means you were the best loser"

Losing to a 5* recruit to schools like USC,Alabama,Clemson, Georgia, Oregon is expected.. But losing a 5* Recruit to UMass. That's just a kick straight to the Balls, but that's what happened this week as 5* DE Ofisa Sippio (#5 Overall/#1 NJ/#2 DE) announces his decision to become a Minuteman..

FIU has added 5 players to their big board, but currently still have just 10 scholarships offered to the 15 remaining players.

                  GAME RECAP

Over the past 3 weeks, the Heisman talk about JR RB Shawn Boyce had died down. He had slipped to #4 after the "Bye" Week despite 952 yds and 9 TD's on the season. Boyce knew he wanted to get to his 1000 yd goal and he got that and more this week.

Wake Forest kept things close as the 1st Quarter comes to close with both teams tied (3-3) as we watched both QB's trade INT's.

Boyce opened up the 2nd Quarter scoring with a 23 yd TD which officially put him over 1000 yds on the season with his 10th rushing touchdown make it (10-3)..

JR QB Dennis Yeast (78) responded by throwing another 2nd Quarter INT but Hawkins did the same.. But for Wake Forest the turnovers kept coming as SR Jose Marciano comes up with his first INT of the season picking off Yeast in the endzone with 2:12 to play in the half.

Hawkins still struggling despite his 500 yd 8 TD performance 2 weeks ago, would finally put together a nice drive using 10 plays including a 23 yd pass to Montrel Muamba to extend the Panthers lead to (17-3) at the half.

Wake Forest opened up the 2nd half with the ball and used a nice double digit drive of their own capped by a 5 yd TD run by SR RB Tyree Burwell (83) to pull within a touchdown (17-10) But FIU would respond with a 64 yd TD run by Boyce as FIU extends the lead back to (24-10). Then after a George Muerong Fumble recovery, Boyce was at it again this time taking the ball 74 yds to the house as the Panthers extend the lead to (31-10) with 4:41 to play in the 3rd.

Still (31-10) as we head to the 4th, Wake Forest cuts the lead to (31-17) as FR CJ Sherry (62) hauls in a 55 yd TD pass from Yeast. Sherry would finish the game with a team high 101 yds on 3 receptions for the Demon Decons.

Shawn Boyce wasn't done though as the JR RB breaks 300 yds on the day and scores his 4th TD with a 2 yd run still with almost 8 minutes to play in the game making it (38-17).

FIU wasn't done though as Boyce and Cantwell lead the Panthers inside the 5 yd line with just under 2 minutes to play but facing a 3rd and 4, Derek Hawkins drops back and floats a beautiful pass to TE Earl Godwin for the final score of the game. (45-17).

Wake Forest QB Dennis Yeast finished the day 19/32 (59%) for 284 yds with 1 TD and 3 INT. RB Tyree Burrell had 12 carries for 76 yds and 1 TD as well as the fumble.

Overcoming 4 INTs is tough against any team, but doing it against one of the top teams in the nation is another all together. Tough loss but as long as you can keep rolling like you did against Wake you'll be in the thick of it at the end.

Unfortunate return to the Hawk Coaster despite the playcalling adjustments

                        GAME RECAP

It was "Senior Day" as FIU would play it final home game of the regular season and a day in which Coach Miller normally starts ever Senior on the team. With only 8 Seniors on this year's roster and 2 of them currently on the IR, Coach Miller decided to do something a little different as FIU took on (0-10) West Virginia..

Coach Miller sent out True Freshman Kevin Pounds to start at QB and True Freshman Darrius Johnson at FB giving SR FB Kwabena Strong his first career start at Tailback.

Originally recruited as a 3* RB out of high school, Strong transitioned to FB after a redshirt season. Listed at 6'2 232lbs, Strong was Isaiah Dennis's backup as a RS SO taking over after Dennis went down with a Broken Wrist helping pave the way for Tavon Logan's record breaking season. Strong then beat out Dennis for the starting job last season once again helping Logan to another record breaking season.

Strong showed last season though that he still knew how to run the football as he managed 335 yds on 46 carries (7.3 avg) well scoring 6 TD's... Strong added to those TD totals this season with 5 in the first 12 weeks of the season but today he almost doubled those #'s as he scores 4 times well running the ball a career high 27 times for 285 yds (10.6 avg)..

Strong wasn't the only RB to have a great game today as Boyce spells Strong with 8 carries for 97 yds (12.1 avg) and 2 scores as well and then late in the game with just over 2 minutes to play fellow JR Terrance Cantwell showed off his elite speed with a 51 yd score to close out the 80-0 shutout..

With the ground game going off for 421 yds and 7 TD's one would think FR QB Kevin Pounds probably didn't have much of a debut, but you would be wrong.

Pounds actually had (4) 1st Half touchdowns well throwing for 333 yds, with his only mistake of the day being a late 4th quarter INT.

                        Coach Miller
"I was really impressed with Kevin today.. He started off great going 11/14 with the 2 TD's in the 1st. The 2nd Quarter he missed quite a few throws (5/12) but still managed to hit Newkirk for a big play as well as Meeks over the middle on a pass that was threaded between 3 defenders.. With the 45-0 lead we didn't really ask much of him in the 2nd half (3/8 1 INT) but I believe he has a bright future"
For West Virginia the season can't get over soon enough. For the Mountaineers today was a complete nightmare..

SR QB Jaqques Ah You (83) started the game but was just 3/11 for 38 yds throwing a INT before leaving the game with a injury.

FR David Ledford (76) took over but managed to throw just 4 pass's completing 2 of them for 24 ydsbefore throwing a INT and also leaving the game.

RS SO Caleb Heeney (74) finished the game but went just 8/15 for 70 yds well also throwing a INT.

Ah You led the team in rushing with 11 yds but 4 sacks brought WVU rushing total to just 1 positive yard on the day.

Pounds and Johnson were not the only True Freshman to get their first start. Former 5* DE Kerry St Pierre got the start today and responded with a team high 3 sacks..

Senior SS George Moeung, and JR's Garrison Falah and Alex McPerron were the 3 responsible for the 3 INT's..

With the blowout win, FIU jumps to #1 in the rankings as they improve to (10-1) Overall and 8-1 in ACC play..

The Panthers will travel to Greenville NC to take on the (4-7) ECU Pirates to close out the season.

ECU lost in Week 13 (25-18) to Miami as the Pirates have no chance at a Bowl, trying to beat #1 FIU is their only goal left.

                        ACC RACE

With both Miami and Virginia Tech winning in Week 13, we still have a 3 way tie for the top spot in the Conference with all 3 teams currently sitting at 8-1, with #15 Virginia currently (7-2).

All eyes will be on the Virginia vs V.T. game cause it could cause some mass confusion on who beat who and who holds what tie break as Championship Week is no longer Division winners.

For sure.. I knew it was going to be a tough game.. Hardrock ranks like #9 in my game, so it was another one of those can't see my routes and I made a couple mistakes throwing the ball to the wrong receiver.. I have always struggled in those games even with a Senior QB with multiple Heisman's.

I just has a blowout against WVU though, so we are still in the hunt to get a rematch with the Canes in the ACC title game..

Your probably not wrong. Could this be the controversy that leads Coach Miller out of Miami? We will see.. But I have to admit I was a little shocked with how well Pounds played.. He did show off his ability to be alot like Hawk (or maybe it's just me on the sticks) cause we had alot of missed wide open WR's in the 2nd half and he got luck with a couple balls thrown straight to the Defense but they dropped the INT's.
