Correct me of I'm wrong but NBA 2k has foot planting and what else new for next gen gameplay, I think wing spans which are nice, but hardly a laundry list of improvements to core gameplay. Most of their improvements were in the presentation department not core gameplay.

Re: VSN Arcade Podcast scheduled to interview EA's Rex Dickson and Clint Oldenberg!
What he actually said was "When we are able to come up with a mechanic to give the user some control over that, it's something we may look at"
You can't give users control over bad snaps. How the hell would that even work? It's the same philosophy for Madden development as it's always been. They will make the game realistic, unless it costs the tourney guys user control... even if its something they shouldn't have control over, then they'll go arcade.
You can't strive to be a simulation football game and then turn around and give people arcade aspects just to justify user control. It really pissed me off when he said that because now I expect to never ever see blocked field goals or punts, fumbled snaps, snaps over the QB's head, wind playing a big role, etc. I shouldn't have to go back to a damn near 8 year old game just to get that simulation aspect. It's unacceptable in my eyes and as long as they keep that philosophy, Madden will never be a simulation football game.Comment

So, ONE year to reach greatness, but I see you didn't mention that game, surely you would like to include FOOTBALL GAMES in your challenge wouldn't you????
There is your example.
Please leave for good now.
Thank you.Comment

anyone who thinks madden today is running on the same wheels it ran on during the 360/ps2 era can not be playing the game. im not saying its THE game now, it still has issues but no way can you say I the same engine. not even close. I think we have lost sight of the real issues plagued that dated engine.Comment

Re: VSN Arcade Podcast scheduled to interview EA's Rex Dickson and Clint Oldenberg!
"What these guys are talking about doing is so much deeper than people realize and were so used to things being half way done that people just assume that's what they're going to do but I mean Clint went in and redid every pass and run plays blocking for next gen, that is quite an impressive feat IMO. On top of that they added over 300 pass rush animations and True Step for more than just the ball carrier, for the defensive players as well, with realistic back pedals.
Correct me of I'm wrong but NBA 2k has foot planting and what else new for next gen gameplay, I think wing spans which are nice, but hardly a laundry list of improvements to core gameplay. Most of their improvements were in the presentation department not core gameplay."
They said themselves that True Step and OL/DL interactions aren't fully implemented so it's not an assumption that things are being done "half way". Two of the main features for next gen madden aren't even complete so why are they releasing a game?
The limited amount of stuff they're putting in sounds great until you look at their competition. NBA2k has "true step" for ALL players, improved animations, improved blocking + control scheme + passing (in current gen as well), wingspan which is a big deal in basketball, player emotion, points of emphasis for coaches in game, improved AI for coaches and players along with a huge graphical upgrade and an overhaul to at least two game modes. They also built the game from the ground up on next gen while releasing an improved current gen game.
Also correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't FIFA have True Step for all 22 players on the field?Comment

Appreciate all of the interest in the interview guys. I'm still in the camp that Madden is heading in the right direction with the current dev team. Whether you agree with the pace of the progress or not, it's obvious we have had 3 years of progress on the title. I play hundreds of games each cycle in my league along with pick up games between friends on top of that so I feel like I put the game through its paces more than the average gamer.Comment

Re: VSN Arcade Podcast scheduled to interview EA's Rex Dickson and Clint Oldenberg!
1. Madden has been being built off this core engine a lot longer than a year, I don't care who has or hasn't been on the current development team.
2. See the answer Clint gave for why they won't add bad snaps, and for similar reasons line penalties. If they won't add any thing that takes user control out of the hands of the tourney players, the NFL will quit existing as a league before we get a true simulation of the sport.Comment

Re: VSN Arcade Podcast scheduled to interview EA's Rex Dickson and Clint Oldenberg!
An overhaul would have been building a new engine with an entirely new animations system for next-gen. 2k did for NBA 2k14 so no reason EA couldn't have done the same for Madden. Madden is the game that desperately needs it more than other sports game. Yet they failed to deliver and decided to stick with a poorly coded engine. Which says one of two things. They are either lazy or don't have the talent to do so.Comment

I've been thinking about the bad snap thing it's pretty frustrating to me and I'm letting Clint and others on Twitter know it this morning. I basically said if you're catering to tournament style players don't tell us you're going after simulation then. If you're going after sim, go 100%Comment

Re: VSN Arcade Podcast scheduled to interview EA's Rex Dickson and Clint Oldenberg!
Thanks for getting us this information MrBill.
Rex: I think for many years Madden has been a great game
I guess he kind of has to say that, but if he believes that, not a good sign. Kind of confused about these mixed messages, on one hand they kind of apologize and express disappointment with the games this generation and now we hear this has been a great game for many years?! OK, moving on.
Clint says they didn't do any work to have penalties triggering on the OL but the power of the new consoles seem to be making them trigger more often. Well, I don't know what to say to that one lol, it sounds like the penalties haven't been touched, at least for the OL, which is Clint's department. He then goes on to say penalties are something they're going to work on in FUTURE GAMES.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
Rex then asked if we will see more PI penalties.
His answer is yeah, but it's going to be more complicated to take on. I'm not sure if that "yeah" means some more in FUTURE GAMES or more this year. Not quite a direct answer. He then elaborates MAYBE in Madden 15 and likely in Madden 16, wow again, I don't know what to say. In the Genesis version if you bumped the guy before the ball got there you got a PI call.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
Bad snaps, etc. a no go because of cheesing tourney players, great. Here's a revolutionary concept #sarcasm, have an option for realism/badsnaps/ etc that can be toggled on or off and have it in the OFF position for tourney players. I've been playing games for a long time on far weaker systems and have had the option to turn certain features on and off.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
True Step is described as a huge piece of technology, but it's only able to be used by user controlled players and CPU ball carriers. Welcome to likely another half step feature to be abandoned in a year or two or recycled with a new name "Pure Foot" or whatever. Pardon my pessimism.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years.
We then learn user and CPU can break out of blocking animations. My bad for not asking MrBill to ask how many new animations there are in the game. I really want to know how many new animations there are in each aspect of the game as my main gripe with Madden since forever is that the game has had a far too limited animation variety which hasn't let the game become more organic. IE added some animations which was a plus, but the context they played out in weren't always pleasing.
When asked about WR/DB interactions Rex says that can mean a lot of things and goes on to list a bunch of interactions and doesn't say whether they are in the game or not!!! He then goes on to say the secondary will play zone better, I'm going to assume that zone was worked on and we don't have a ton of new animations/outcomes for WR/DB interactions or he surely would have bragged about them. We get the new "player sense" will make it better, I guess that's the part where our little digital dudes are making 1000 calculations per second with 2 or 3 animations to express them. Again, sorry for my pessimism.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
On to signature animation styles. Rex wants this game animating on a AAA level before they concentrate on that. Wow, so we have to wait for the WORST animating game in sports to get to AAA level before we see signature styles. Look at all the signature styles, shots, batting stances, etc. in other games and look how far behind we are. So the short answer was no, no signature styles.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
Presentation, no halftime or post game show. Need I say more??? They want to get the game right before they do that. I'm really at a loss for words here so I'll just say:
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
Sliders, another long winded, non direct answer that makes it sound like little to nothing was done here either. He talks about work done "this year" on sliders but I'm not sure if he's talking current gen or the new game coming out. Again, I think if they were new and improved he would brag about it, so don't expect much in that department either.
Did they or did they not work on this game for 2 years?
That's about half of it, I'm beat for now, thanks again MrBill for doing this but reading between the lines it doesn't sound like this game was worked on for 2 years, sounds like they touched up a lot of stuff, have the beginnings of some new features that may or may not work, etc.
Maybe I'll break down the other half later but I'm frustrated.Comment

Did you watch the Green Bay game last weekend? The Packers blocked a punt and Kuhn tried to pick it up but failed and it gave the Browns the ball back. How about NE getting a penalty on a game winning fg? The NFL gives us any given Sunday moments every game, Madden intentionally removes most of them from their game for the tourney guys.Comment

@ jetsufferer
The old dev team led by Ian used to talk about how different teams worked on different parts of the game. I guess this really is a new direction because working on oline and animations means they can't add halftime or post game now.Comment

Re: VSN Arcade Podcast scheduled to interview EA's Rex Dickson and Clint Oldenberg!
I'm glad you understand why people hate that response. To be totally honest, that it caters to tourney guys isn't the only reason I hate that. I find madden to be stale, repetitive, and boring. Bad snaps, blocked kicks, penalties add life to the game. That's the joy of the NFL.
