According to an EA community manager there is no sim setting in Madden because casuals and the media are perceived as not caring about one enough to justify the dev time in creating for hardcore gamers. At least that's the way I understood it but I'll post the exact quote so people can read it for themselves.

I have asked this question every year for the last few years so I will keep my tradition going, why don't Madden and NCAA Football have a separate simulation setting? You make a great point that most gamers don't want to bother with sliders, they want factory presets, so it seems to me that providing a "classic" and "simulation" setting, like other sports sims, would make sense.

I've been saying this for years as well, but what it comes down to is dev time. We are constantly up against time and have to prioritize features and improvements. While a simulation setting is big with the hardcore community the average gamer and media won't tell the difference....

UFC had a "Simulation" and "Pro" setting (If I remember correctly), and the average gamer was smart enough to know that simulation meant more like the actual sport, and Pro was the opposite. That excuse they gave about gamers not knowing the difference makes no sense.

Something gives me the impression the guys up at EA think the word "casual" equates to the word stupid

What's also funny is how they are saying they want to make the entire game sim... Why aren't they worried about tourney players when making wholesale changes?

Because that answer was a crock of ****. That's why.

Tourney players exist because they capitalise on the ineptness of EA Tiburon (or previous ineptness, well see if it remains). They will adapt to any changes because thy aren't a real market or audience of the game.

I've come to the conclusion that what EA wants to do and what they actually can do don't match up. They just don't have either the time or the talent. Maybe both.

And other sports games arent constantly up against time and have to prioritize also? And some how they find time to put in Sim and Casual settings. They either don't want to do it because they don't have to with no comp or they just don't have the talent.

Good point, so with that being said it comes down to lack of talent.

The talent issue is such a controversial topic here. All I will say is - look at this game compared to the other sports games. You can even still compare Madden 25 to NFL 2k5. Let that sink in for a second. It's really sad.

As for the comments about them not adding the bad snaps and what not - this just goes to show you they don't really want to make a football game. A guy posted in the APF2k8 forums the other day about how he saw the CPU team he was playing do something really cool It was a 4th and inches play. They came out like they were going to go for it, then tried to draw the defense offsides, then called timeout when they were unsuccessful. Can you imagine the AI in Madden doing that? It's amateur hour at Tiburon. Their programmers are not very good. Not only could they not implement that properly, but I'd be willing to bet that no one there even THOUGHT of putting something like that in the game.

The proof is in the product. I don't need to go there to know the ability level compared to other studios. I see a yearly embarrassment come out and cost 59.95.

I agree it must be a talent thing. It just seems like the madden team is not very detail oriented seems like the minimum is done to complete the game to a low standard so it can be released. It's the only thing that makes sense to why uniforms are incorrect and many other things we been waiting for years in the game have yet to be implemented. Also madden never add the little things that make the game great.

I hope we are talking about older talent vs newer talent.

I've heard Ian state that ripping out old code and putting in new code took a long time.

How can we judge the Rex's, Kolbe's and the Clint's of the world when we haven't even seen NG game play yet?

You're referencing "Designers". They are not the guys writing the actual code. The programmers themselves who actually write the code are not good.

Can't their be some quality control with that, though?

Most manufactures, who are as big as EA, has a quality control department.

They're also fundamentally designing things badly. It's just as much a lack of ideas and direction than it has been execution.

With the seeming BETTER direction and ideas we should hopefully see whether it is conclusively the execution or not.

There are no more excuses for the game not being what we expect it to be within two more years, the tech is there. It's all on EA Tiburon now.

Programming is an art. It's not like making widgets on an assembly line. I think a combination of poor/strange design choices, even worse implementation and not having the pressure of a better product breathing down your neck has given us what we have today. Tiburon football. I was excited for about one day until I read this interview and I saw the comments regarding penalties and the bad snaps. That just took all of the wind out of my sails. I look at APF2k8 and I see so many amazing things that make me feel like its football and not madden-ball. The players seem like they are alive and not clones of each other walking aimlessly around like zombies. Clearly, when that game was made, they weren't concerned that a 12 year old was going to throw a tantrum because his snap was high, or he got a pass interference penalty. It's a football game, and those things are as much a part of football as touchdowns and qb sacks.

At this point, I just hope someone else comes along and gets a shot at it. Even if 2k ported APF and rushed out a quick version in a year, it would still be a better game than Madden. What a wasted opportunity this was for EA and they should be embarrassed and ashamed. This is why so many people have just given up on the franchise and moved on.
