Re: The NFL and 2K Are Back Together, 'Non-Simulation' Games Will Release Beginning i

The possibility of 2K Football had me checking in daily. The ratification language is disheartening. At least we'll find out soon so I can move on.

I'm not sure if this is mentioned much, but in my view MUT and Ultimate Team modes in general are built around the same team building design that All-Pro Football 2k8 was. If you think about it, many players are choosing a mode without real team logos, names, etc. They're building teams with a bunch of various players.

What I found from playing a LOT of APF 2k8 is that I actually preferred the team building aspect of that game versus choosing NFL teams as-is. The limitations on talent based on level made it feel like a relatively even playing field for competitive play.

Now, I don't play any MUT or Madden in general for the past 5+ years, but it really gets me thinking. If done right, could 2k build off that team building style game and compete on the market? Not sure.

It's interesting to think about though!

The other side, like many of you are discussing, is a very well done non-simulation game. I still think the combination of hard and soft counters that Tecmo Super Bowl brought created timeless arcade fun. Could 2K go that route? I'd be in!

Man can we get those back door deals the NFLPA was doing to screw over 2K back in 08 trending? Social media wasn’t what it is now at that time. We live in a world where social media got Young Justice back and this ridiculous Snyder Cut of Justice League released. I don’t expect it to change the decision we’re gonna get next week but if we can piss in EA’s corn flakes and not let them take a smooth victory lap to another 5-6 years of they’re garbage *** game going unobstructed to millions that’d at least feel a little better. That story isn’t out there near enough how terrified of competition they truly are and lows that were stooped to spit in the face of gamers/consumers with this entire farcical situation.

Yeah, I left that out. Full customization is a must. That said, i don't even need real names of real players. Just need something immersive with the same gameplay.

I'll take a sports game with fully fictional roster with no problem if it has great gameplay and a immersive season/career mode. The whole needing current players and power of the shield doesn't matter to me. I didn't stop playing APF consistently because it didn't have NFL license. I stopped because the game is so shallow outside of gameplay. Give me APF 2k8 with modern graphics and gameplay/animations with a immersive franchise/MyLeague, I'd have no problem with fictional rosters.
The problem is that generic fictional sports games won't sell well. For a lot of casual gamers, the power of the shield is important. They don't want to play with a Brady Thomas, they want Tom Brady. The problem with Indie titles is lack of license, but mostly because those companies usually lack the resources, manpower, and brand recognition to put out a high quality product and also be able to mass market it to consumers.

Exactly! If I'm not mistaken, the fact that 2k is also licensed by the NFLPA (its own entity)opens the possibility for an All-Pro Football type of game. The only way that avenue would also be closed is if the NFLPA's agreement with EA mirrors the EA/NFL pact.

Bingo. The gameplay was fantastic, but there wasn’t much to it outside of the games.

Gameplay was great. But a lot was left to be desired. Little user freedom. I would have love to be able to do most what was editable in APF Editor in game. As much as the newest Javo editor looks good, I'm not the type who spends more than what I paid for. I would have love to edit CPU rosters and attributes, number of abilities offline. Then they went very shallow on the season mode. It was one thing to lock it to a single season, but to make it shallow is another. It was a collection of exhibition games. When I'm playing any type of franchise mode, I want it to feel like a living world that keeps me up to date of what's going on. It is just play and sim ahead that's it. If you don't manually check stats and standings, you don't know what's going on outside of your team. All the legends put up ridiculous stats, so unless you played on 15 min quarters you couldn't compete with them. Then when you win a championship, it leaves you with a "that's it, what's next" feeling". You have to create the immersion and storylines in your head. In one season, I had a star QB who was balling out then got hurt in middle of season for 3 games. I literally had to change up whole offense for those games. That was actually one of the immersive aspects I had. It made roster construction very important. But it would have been great if at least you had ability to develop generic players. I get the main purpose was to show how much better the legends were and smartly constructing a team, but as the season went on, it would have been nice if you can progress a generic player. Like they might not become a "star" player, but you could give them an ability. For example, only investing one star WR, but by week 8 or so, being able to assign another WR 3rd Down Specialist or a Slot CB Coverage Artist.

The APF way is definitely not the approach to take. I think the thing most people are forgetting are that Sega produced the ESPN 2k games up to 2k5. Visual Concepts took over after that. So VC just improved on the 2k5 engine. I guess their plans was to strip everything down besides gameplay then build everything up over time

Visual Concepts was always the developer and producer of NFL 2K and the 2K sports games. From 1999 to 2005 Sega was the parent company and publisher which they sold VC to Take-2 in 2005 and they created the 2K label and 2K brand as a publisher, Visual Concepts was always the company behind the game. The same devs who created NFL 2K to NFL 2K5 developed APF 2K8 and continue to work at 2K and develop NBA 2K.

Agreed. I went back and played it recently and the gameplay still holds up well in most areas. I even kinda like the concept of how you pick your roster. But it feels like that should be one mode in a much larger game.

I would prefer a game with fictional rosters and a full fledged franchise mode personally.

The PS3 version detracts for me. Framerate struggles, jaggies, and no vibration.

And no one has ever really mentioned this that I know of, but compared to 2K5 I don't like the player models as much. They are much skinner, as are their uniform numbers. It always looked really off to me. I also miss the blinking red-blue player cursor for charging up. These are small things, but I felt like they changed that "just because," and it came off as inferior in my eyes.

I always enjoyed the way APF 2K8 looks, especially now with the RPCS3 version, it really enhances the visuals of the game.

Yeah see, those uniform numbers are way too small IMO. They're definitely too skinny, that's for sure. It does look cleaner than the original PS3 version, though.

Is it glitch-free? Is there vibration? I have a high-end CPU.
