League is appealing, and trying to get a stay while they appeal.

They also still have a case open with the National Labor and Relations Board challenging the decertification. If they win that it's game over the the players and they get locked back out and the class action lawsuit for antitrust violations probably goes away.
Great summary --- this helps a bunch.

          Go down what road?

Someone posted earlier in this thread that the owners were counting on getting the case in front of certain judges.

"Who is John Kasay?" is the response that you'll need to produce if you're asked on Jeopardy about which player was the first to report to work after the verdict by Judge Nelson ended the 2011 NFL lockout, at least temporarily.

I do think (maybe just hope) that the lockout - as in, no NFL activity whatsoever - is more-or-less over, or at least beginning to end. I don't think the league will win an appeal, though they may yet get a stay on the Nelson ruling for the short-term.

EDIT: there's a line of thought, probably incredibly unlikely, that free agency / trades might start on the same day as the NFL Draft. How crazy would that be?

Instead of quickly denying it Judge Nelson is giving the plantiffs a day to respond (by 9am Wednesday) to the request for a stay.

This makes it less likely that NFL will be open for business during the draft IMO.

Did anyone see this article? Roger Goodell wrote this piece, and frankly, I think it was a miscalculation and a foreseeable PR hit. He starts blaming the players and union for all the chaos they will cause because of their demands in a new CBA. Nevermind the fact that it was the owners are the ones that wanted a new CBA in the first place. Nor the complete hyperbole he is spewing.

This article had the opposite of effect of Goodell's intention, I think. Instead of morbid curiosity about the whole situation, I will support the players side where it is reasonable, and it casts a lot of doubt about the intentions of the owners and Goodell from now on.

don't you find it odd that this ruling happens just before the nfl draft but yet they say it is a victory for the players ? i just read online that they should be able to trade players during the draft here is the link

to me this changes the draft alot

It is a huge victory for the players, being able to trade in the draft has no effect on that as that's something normal.

The players now have the leverage that legally they are told they can go back to work, the owners no longer have the fact that players aren't being paid as some leverage anymore if the lockout is indeed lifted

It's not a huge victory for anyone yet until stays/appeals are ruled on.

^^^^This. All this really means is that there will be no more negotiations until the appeal ia ruled on by the 8th Circuit. Which means we are still no where near a deal.

                            Re: Official CBA Thread

Technically, according to the closing words of Judge Nelson's ruling, until the appeal is ruled upon or a stay is granted, "the lockout is enjoined". That is, the lockout is over, and teams have to conduct business. If teams don't conduct business, they are, for the moment anyway, in direct violation of court order.

With that, a few teams still aren't even letting players in the building today, which is disappointing but not unexpected. Which means they are in direct violation of the court order.

Yes the lockout has "ended". But there is no CBA and it seems the negotiations have stopped in favor of litigation.

That's the situation as of March, however mediation has resumed and is still scheduled to do so in a couple of weeks, regardless of what happens with the lockout.

The lockout is just the fan-facing part of this labor unrest. As soon as the league imposes rules for free agency, etc, then the Brady lawsuit for breaking antitrust laws as a result of imposing those rules will move forward.
