I'll give a quick answer for now and if it turns into a conversation and expand on it:

    The answer is yes.

2nd-3rd and short/1/2/3 are "supposed" to be easy yet we still see teams struggle converting those for various reasons.

10 yds for a 1st down is fine and perfect.

It's a solid idea that'll never happen. Owners love points, coaches and fans hate change.

There's a simpler way to make those 10 yds more difficult than what they are: Go back to the pre mid 00s days and the DBs play press coverage/tight defense without much consequence.

I didn't get a chance to read the article but I have often thought that with today's passing games 1st and 10 is too short.

The problem with changing it is it would start a slippery slope of other things (like penalty distance that would then start to be discussed being changed).

I do get PPM's point but I think that's a different scenario because of personnel packages and it just means what would have been a third and one in those instances would become a convertable 3rd and 6 (if it was changed to 1st and 15) and we would still have plenty of 3rd and ones.

This is like making the base paths 91 feet in baseball…don't like it. Instead, revert back to the pre-1999 rules and allow DB's to bump/tussle with WR's until the ball is in the air. That would go a long way to reducing the scoring...

Don't like the idea at all. Like PPM said, allow defensive backs play press coverage and be more physical again. Too bad Bill Polian pushed for so many rule changes back in the day to help the Colts.

Cmon, you can think out of the box better than that. I like these ideas:

This is pretty damning IMO. The Fritz Pollard Alliance is telling minority candidates to not interview or take for the Dolphins GM job. Essential they feel that the GM will have no real power within the organization and be offered the same "role" that Ireland turned down.

                          Re: NFL Off Topic

I have a few ideas to help balance the game back out.

The first has been said several times on the previous page.

The second is quite simple: teach DBs and linebackers how to tackle. The flying shoulder move that many defenders like to do is cool looking when it works, but it is far less successful than trying to wrap a guy up.

The third is teaching man coverage. It amazed me when Leodis Mckelvin gave an interview about his improved man coverage this year and his reasoning for his better coverage on deep balls was, turning his head to look for the ball! So what I gathered from his interview was that from the time he was drafted until Mike Pettine became defensive coordinator nobody ever told him to play the football. Just put your arms up and hope you either get lucky (more likely pass interference) or tackle him after the 30+ yard gain.

I can't be the only one that notices DBs simple don't play the football that much. Other than getting away with a bunch of DPI (in today's soft rules), the shutdown corners of the NFL also play the damn football, they don't just stare down their guy and then throw their arms up.

Damning of whom? The Dolphins which, according to that article, are offering a position that exists in several other organizations, or of the Fritz Pollard Alliance? I'm still unsure why they would advise against it. Getting experience in any field, especially when the full weight of the job isn't on you, seems like a good place to go. This seems like the perfect spot for somebody who has never been a GM.

Yes, because plenty of first time GMs have needed to take a job that doesn't involve being a GM to gain experience? That is what being an assistant GM is for. Who would really want to be a GM that has to go through the coach and a VP of football administration to make a move?
