Don't bet on it. If I were throwing my money around then I would put it on the 360 version of Tiger being mostly a port with much improved graphics. I'm sure they'll add some goodies to the game and let the PR people spin them but I'm not expected a complete overhaul for the first next-gen version of this game.

I do wonder, is the PS2 controller just not sensitive enough to be set up to require more precise swings?

The putting is starting to annoy me. I'm sinking way too many 30 and 40 foot putts and a couple of 60 footers. I thought it may have been my expertise but I threw in Links and still sweating to make 10 footers and a 40 footer is a pipe dream. The problem is that the greens are way too flat and it doesn't take much skill to read the greens and picking a path seems more forgiving than Links. I've only played a few tournaments in Tour mode, does anybody know if pin placements get harder as you get deeper into the calender so you have some nice slopes to putt against because if those courses are that flat in real life then PGA pros would be breaking 60 every week. I realize now that the beauty of Links is most putts usually are on a wicked slope and 5 footers aren't gimmies.

Also made my first hole in one. If it had been Links I would have been whooping it up but with TW you get an empty feeling thinking the game is getting too easy and it was predetermined. Lowest round so far has been 63 which got me concerned but I followed that up with a 73 on the same course so I still have hope that I won't be shooting mid 50's by next week.

Anybody try putting without the green grid becaause I may have to resort to that to make it harder but the graphics aren't detailed enough to read it properly so it becomes a guessing game.

it seems they took the most difficult aspect in real golf (putting) and made it ez in this game. Lord,I hope they wake up by the 360 game.

Same here Dan :-( I don't feel like I'm earning most of the longer putts I make. I've got an 82 footer to my credit, and it didn't register on my pulse meter for excitement... seemed "pre-ordained". And the sad part is that I play exclusively in Tour mode!? What's weird though is that every now and then, the putting will get a little more difficult. I noticed today while playing in the daily tournament on XBox Live, using Chris DeMarco that I was missing a lot of 15-25 foot putts that I seem to make with the same stroke using my minimally skilled created player, offline.

I'd be curious to see if anyone else is experiencing this phenomena with the putting, and really, overall gameplay being more difficult in the online daily tournament. BTW, lag has no effect in the online daily tournament because you're playing by yourself.

I have not noticed whether the slopes get tougher as you progress in tournament play. I haven't moved that far along yet.

I've had three holes in one already. I got a little excited with the first one, but the more I played, the more I realized that this game is designed to yield to holing out long shots. I knocked in a 3 iron from 184 yards on one of the par 3's at Kapaluha during a match with Justin Leonard today. My player has a power rating of "4", and it was an uphill hole. The ball landed 25 yards short of the green and took an unnatural looking path to the hole... the entire sequence seemed staged. I was actually let down to see it because I knew good and well I didn't deserve a hole in one.

Is there a way to turn it off when you're putting? I can't imagine it working because you're right, the shading and graphics alone are not sufficient to convey the slope information needed to make an intuitive read.

Go to options on the main menu and you have a load of things you can toggle off including the grid. I only have the grid turned on and everything else off. The only bad thing is they don't give you choices for wind, the speed of the greens etc... as it looks likes tour mode is predetermined for course conditions. They also don't have the lie indicator as a choice which turning off could have made chipping alot harder.

The one thing that I really hate are these stupid fantasy courses they put in Tour mode. They're impossibly hard with all these elevations and it looks more like an obstacle course and shouldn't be used in Tour mode.

The wind again isn't used correctly as playing St Andrews should be a struggle against the wind but there is hardly any used which makes the course too easy as I shot 61 and could of broke 60 if I didn't get a 4 putt on 1 hole because I was screwing around a bit. I've noticed the wind affects your shot when it north-south but east-west it barely registers.

Another thing I've noticed in Tour mode is the other golfers scores go up and down as you do so if you're playing lousy the leader will always be within 5 or 6 shots. If you end up at +5 after a tournament the winner will be even or +1 and if you shoot -10 they'll always be within striking range. I shot 61 the 1st round at St Andrews with a 5 shot lead and the 2nd round had 3 golfers shooting 58 just to keep up with you and I was already 5 shots behind before I even started the 2nd round. You'll never win by 15 strokes but if I play like crap I shouldn't have a chance to win. Those little things ruin single play because it just seems phony.

"I've had three holes in one already. I got a little excited with the first one, but the more I played, the more I realized that this game is designed to yield to holing out long shots. Same problem here, I get eagles from holing out almost every round and on purpose I hit a 120 yard approach shot aimed straight at the hole even though the wind was 8 mph to the left and it went straight in. This was in the 4th round and I was 3 shots behind the leader so it was like the CPU was helping you to win. I've spent countless hours playing Links and I've never holed out from anywhere except ONCE when I chipped it in off the fringe from 10 yards away.

              Yosemite and Onlooker,

I'm having similar experiences. One hole I'll mis a 12 foot putt, and the next hole I will sink a 40 foot putt. One hole I'll practically shank it of the tee. But then 2 shots later on a par five I go with the Iron and hit a "miraculous" 140 yard shot for eagle. It does very much appear that the game is fixed to give you occasional long putts and "miracle" shots for your approach from fairway-to-green.

There was one fantasy course where I was 5 under on the front nine but finished 8 over on the back nine. I can't temember which course, but I did notice that as I tanked on the back nine, scores for the leaders dropped as well. I didn't think anything of though, until you mentioned it Yosemite.

Somehow I'm still having fun with the game. Maybe it's the new game buzz or the fact that I haven't seriosly sat down with TW in 5 years. So do you guys think Links is a better game, all the way around?

ps. Where are all the people/galleries in this game? I hear them clapping, but I never see them.

Can you change the difficulty in "Rivals" mode? I don't play on-line so this will be my main mode. I have the game, but I have not seen an option for "Tour" mode. I think the difficulty must increase gradually in "Rivals" mode?

Also, can you complete all the message challenges? I'm still in the first era, and I have played about 8 challenges, but it still says there are 13 available? Does this ever change?

inkcil, Links 2004 is a much better game, overall, IMO. It is certainly much closer to being a simulation, but I found that I had to cap my golfer skills at 25 to keep it challenging.

TW 2006 offers more courses, modes of play, and presentation frills, but it's way being Links 2004 in graphics quality and intuitiveness of the interface. I have some fun with TW 2006, but it is really a love/hate relationship. I just wonder how much longer I'll be able to tolerate its faults?

                    toychri,

I've heard so many complaints about how slow the pace of play is in the Rivals mode, I haven't even tried it out yet. I'm using the PGA Season mode offline to build my character. I may give it a try soon, but I'm already frustrated enough with the delays this game imposes on you that I don't think I could handle the added delays reported in Rivals mode.

I haven't encountered any yet, but I'm only in my third tournament. I would suspect that there are others though.

Also is there a option where you can place a bet at each hole to see how gets the closed to the green first or what not? I heard something like that was in there.

Thanks for all the impressions! They have been really helpful to me. I do have one basic question I would like to get a few different opinions on:

I liked TW 04 and 05, they weren't realistic by any means, but they were fun to me. The Gameface was great, the Legends(I guess "Rivals" this year) was deep and fun and playing with friends was pretty great. My question is, has anyone here who actually enjoyed the past 2 TW's gotten 06 yet, and if so, how are you liking it?

A lot of the people posting the detailed impressions haven't played a TW in a while and are comparing it to Links. I was just wondering how it stacks up in the eyes of a TW player.

I did try turning it off in TW04 but I found that it was diificult to make 3 footers as you have no idea how level the green is but if it limits those 60 footers then maybe it's worth it.

I've started playing Links again and it just makes me realize how good this game is and one of the best sports games ever. It never gets old in it's mechanics and if it had a good single play career mode I would never have a reason to play another golf game. For a game that is a few years old the graphics are so much more detailed and the physics are spot on. Even though I'm pretty good at hitting it straight you always have a fear of shanking it and by raising the backswing just a little higher you get added distance which is brilliant when you're trying to reach some of those par 5's with the risk\reward factor if you don't do it perfectly just like in real golf. I feel much more rewarded hitting a good shot and would probably **** myself if I managed a hole in one. I can't wait for Links 360.
