Thanks, fellas! I definitely felt good about it - I'm also reasonably certain that I would have been pretty close even playing 1 set of tees back, as the difference on most holes between the whites and blues was pretty minimal (and actually zero on some holes). I'd love it if the course were a par 72 but I'm more confident I'll get there now than I have been in years.

Of course, my dispersion is still really wide...I'm capable of a 78, or a 98. Just depends on the day.

I will be headed out to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area for a week on October.

Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale, Talking Stick, Papago, and We-Ko-Pa are all on the itinerary.

Awesome itinerary. I've done TPC Scottsdale and We-Ko-Pa (I don't remember which course...Saguaro I think?). Both fun, both very different. TPC almost doesn't seem like desert golf at all, whereas We-Ko-Pa is very much quintessential desert golf. You will have fun.

            Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Just got home from another pilgrimage to Pennsylvania this year. Apologies Kehlis.

Man was Oakmont pure. They have made some crazy changes to the courses. It’s going to be a wild US Open in 2025. Very much looks forward to it. It’s going to be a bloodbath with a lot of the additions, restoration, and changes they’ve made. We did stay in the new cottages built off the 18th green. Very cool spot.

That being said, yesterday I struggled on the front and shot 45. The transfusion at the then woke up the putter and started rolling the rock. Came in with a 38 for a smooth 83.

This morning I was a little slow to get up, after being at the casino in Pittsburgh late in the night. Got off to start with two pars, ended up shooting a 42/41 83. Putter was electric the latter 27 holes.

Avoided the church pew bunkers, which have had another pew added to them. I’ve now shot 83 in three consecutive rounds dating back to last year at Oakmont. While I felt I could have gone another lower, I’ll never complain about those scores.

            Some views to go with.

              Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Question for the club builders here:

I recently cut a half inch off of my driver to get it down to 45.25 from 45.75.

Research tells me I need to add anywhere from 6-8 grams back to head. Can someone confirm or deny?

              Thanks.

You have a few options here. Cutting 1/2" will reduce swingweight by 2-3 points. About 2 grams will move it one swingweight.

First, if you notice no difference, you can leave it as is. I'll be honest, I spend everyday handling golf clubs, I've yet to meet an amateur golfer who can feel the difference of two SW points.

Second, depending what grip you have on your club, you could simply go with a grip that is 5-6g lighter than what you have now and it will accomplish the same thing.

Thirdly, depending what driver you have, you could get a heavier weight if it's adjustable. Most manufacturers offer weights every 5g or so.

Lastly, lead tape can always do the trick.

I am currently gaming last years Rogue ST Max. Callaways website has the default SW at a D4. Shaft is a Fujikura Ventus Blue 5R (non-velocore).

Grip is a Golf Pride Tour Velvet +4.

I added about 6 grams of tape (1 inch equals 1 gram?) to the heel side for now. I also got an aftermarket weight from eBay. Also had to get a security torx set to get into the driver head.

Might have been placebo but I definitely felt the head a lot more. I’m playing tomorrow after work so I will report back with results.

So if you like the grip, then don't worry about that.

1" is 10-12g of weight needed back.

In theory cutting down the shaft and not adding weight would make it feel less head heavy. So definitely some placebo. But I'd tell you just add the weight in there and you're good.

I must have driven by (through?) Oakmont a hundred times (along with millions of other people) and every time I am on that stretch of I76 I think to myself, I would love to pull over right now and hop over the fence with my sticks....

By the way, can you hear the highway from the course? I would imagine you would not be able to avoid it, but then, it is a fair amount above the road surface with high walls on either side of the highway in that stretch.

The day I win the lottery, I'll be a member there, and you'll be high up on the list to bring out there. For now I just have to take advantage of work trips.

To be honest, you don't notice it at all until you're walking across the overpass. Even on #1's green, you're far enough away, and the turnpike is so much lower that you literally don't hear anything until you're walking across heading to #2.

                            Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

So I took my Dad to get a new driver the other day and I told him that he should have them just custom fit one for him. It's super cheap here ($50) and if you buy the club from them they put that $50 towards your purchase.

My dad is 72 and has 2 bad knees and lung issues so he tires quickly but the guy was great with him. I have been fitted before and had my wife fitted as well on her last set and it is always quite the fun and enlightening experience so I really wanted my Dad to have a chance at this.

Anyway, he goes in and hits his old driver which is way too much club for him as he has hit it for 15 years and his body and swing have changed a lot in that time. The guy goes through a bunch of shafts and driver heads and nothing is really working great. My Dad has a very inconsistent swing due to his knees and his launch angle ranges from 6 degrees to 17 degrees, with a 10 degree driver. Anyway, the guy is helping him out and then just leaves saying he will be right back. He brings in a set of Cobra's and pulls out the driver to let me Dad hit.

All of a sudden my Dad is crushing it down the middle, increasing his ball speed by 4 mph and his launch angle is much more consistent. It also helped that the guy suggested 2 easy changes in ball placement and a slight stance adjustment, but my Dad's face lit up when he saw how well he could hit this driver.

So the guy goes, well this driver comes as a full set, but what I will do for you, since you are hitting it so well, is that I will pull this driver from the set to sell to you and just put a new driver in this set and sell it like that. I was totally blown away by the fact that they would do that instead of trying to make him buy the full set.

I am just telling this story to emphasize the fact that if you are in the market for new clubs, save a little bit of extra money and go get yourself a fitting. It is such an amazing experience and you will have so much fun and even probably learn a few things about the game of golf.

Yes, probably even more so. I am in that same handicap ballpark, and I got fitted for irons early this season. It's helped immensely, and my index has improved.

I played a 9-hole golf outing on a par-3 course and was hitting my irons purer than I ever have. Ended up shooting a 29, just 2-over.

On other rounds at full-sized courses, I am hitting the ball closer to pins, cleaner off the turf, and have more confidence when playing. I think the fitting helped with that quite a bit.
