Re: PGA Tour 2K23 Releases on October 14 - Trailer and Video Interview

Another thing I just noticed in the press release for PGA 2K23...

Here are the costs listed for the Clubhouse Pass system in PGA 2K23:

Clubhouse Pass is available in three tiers: Free, Premium ($9.99/season) and Premium + ($19.99/season).

This is in comparison to what it was in PGA 2K21:

Free: This tier enables players to access 15 free levels of the 75 levels in Season 1. Every five levels passed will result in a reward
Premium Pass ($7.99): All 75 levels of rewards are available to unlock through gameplay
Premium+ Pass ($14.99): All 75 levels of rewards are available to unlock through gameplay players can also skip the first 20 levels and automatically unlock those rewards

So DLC costs for the game are going up...ugh.

      That’s unfortunate

I was a beta tester for the first three Golf Club games and I asked about the lack of pot bunkers. They can't do them in this game because of the way the courses are rendered on the fly from what they call course DNA stored on the server. A pot bunker is too complex to be reproduced using this course DNA model. The only way they could include a pot bunker would be to have the whole course file stored on the player's hard drive. It would be impractical for them to store this much data as it would approach a half a gigabyte of storage for each course.

I suspect we'll continue to see drive-by representations of put bunkers in 2K23, but who knows? Maybe they've come up with something in their course DNA model that can produce something a little more representative.

Interesting...especially since they are using a real-life course that has pot bunkers in it. If they can't accurately do them, why even try?

I do know some designers have made serviceable pots in 2K21, but it sounds like it requires an insane amount of time and effort to do so. Seeing 2K's real course creations in the last game, it doesn't seem they put a whole lot of effort into the minute details...I think there are floating cars at the Copperhead Course, and things like that.

This doesn’t make sense, in 2k21 you can literally play all the official courses OFFLINE and not connected to servers.

So official courses should have no problem.

I can't answer that question VS. They have some sort of formula that does this and I got the impression that they would have to deviate from that formula of 'reconstruction through course DNA' to make this too inefficient to pull off... that's my hunch, not a direct quote from them.

Best case for me: this isn't a pre-order. Will wait for some actual reviews. First impressions from the trailer aren't great. Graphics don't look like much of an upgrade, and I have absolutely ZERO interest in all the shiny bling, Michael Jordan, hockey stick putters, etc. To me, it looks like they're trying to go more mainstream with this one, and I might just sit it out. Time will tell.

Problem with the way they market this series is that the initial info that comes out is always geared toward the "mainstream". Anyone who's looking for in-depth details needs to wait for weeks (at least) to get the info they want. It stinks, but it's the 2K/HB way.

They are trying to get the arcade, casual crowd here, hoping they pre-order, and retweeting anyone who says anything positive about the release. This also caters toward their content creator crowd...those folks are eating up the "Tiger Woods and pros are back and playable" and the "Topgolf will be fun to play on stream" side of things. Meanwhile, the designers who stream have to respond to questions about the course creator with "stay tuned, more to come".

I like having TW in the game, as well as the playable pros, and even am intrigued by Topgolf. But that's not what I, or most folks here, want them to talk about. Thing is...at this point, we are not the ones they are aiming to capture.

I hope this game doesn't have Top Golf/Liv Golf vibes. Unfortunately, that's seems to be the new era we're in. Look at the explosion of YouTube Golf. I see pros starting their own channels and it's like a party outing.

I would prefer a more realistic Golf experience focused on winning tournaments and shooting low scores on tough courses. Just not a fan of wacky celebrations and dance moves after birdies style presentation. I'll buy it just to be able to use the pros and see what EA has to offer.

Ahhh I see. No, I’m not blaming you.

Hopefully they can fix it for 23.

I've spent some time closely looking at every screen shot on the 2k web site, and paused the very minimal scenes in the trailer, and it sure looks like the crowd faces, clothes and animation is greatly improved, and that they've toned down the super bright bonny green/blue sky look that all of the courses have (when you're playing on a sunny day), to make them look more realistic and less shroomy cartoony bright lol.

Also, at least for Tiger and the other pro faces, they seem a bit more realistic and less blocky looking with those zombie eyes and teeth. I hope that translates into better looking MyPlayer created players.

Not revolutionary stuff, but as I've said I was hoping for some improvements in those details while still being on the Unity engine. The courses have always looked pretty nice to me, it's just the players, crowds and some course objects that seem to have suffered more from a lack of spending more time to refine them within the Unity engine than from shortcomings of the engine itself.

I'm in...and it will fun playing an improved version of my favorite video game of all time, until the EA game comes out. Good times.

The addition of the 3 click swing mechanic is huge for me. I'm hopeful that career mode has been fixed and improved upon, but if not, I'll still enjoy the game as a way to relax and play 9 or 18 holes at one of the many created courses.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I like that 3-click is in; if done correctly, it can be good. Think MLB The Show's throwing mechanism for a good representation of how meter-based throwing can be done well.

The graphics and character models do not look upgraded much at all. The swing animations are still herky-jerky and the arms look disconnected from the body like the original 'Virtua Fighter' or something. Oh well. I suppose the skeptic in all of us was ultimately correct.

My snap impression overall was lipstick on a pig, but I ate plenty of the last pig (own & played the prior version plenty). I'm willing to see how the game plays once it's out in the wild, but I was sorta wishing I would've been more blown away. Regardless of what you think of the NBA2K series, when you see the game in previews, it is undeniably breath-taking in how realistic it looks. This just doesn't look like that...
