Strange? I always have avi xvid files of TV shows on my PS3 hard drive, and they play fine.

Aura video converter makes a free version. It's great.

        Thanks guys.

We just traded in all the Wii stuff since GS was having a promotion which ended yesterday for the extra $50 on systems and they still have the extra 50% going on trades. I got my kids a PS3 since I already have quite a bit of games they can play, so its cool to just share games instead of buying games for separate systems. I am at a loss, the PS3 will not allow me to create a separate PSN account on the second PS3. It tells me that I need to add a master account to it and then I can place the child account for my kids. I am at a loss as I'm trying to get this second PS3 on PSN so I can d/l some demos too for them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Log in with your PSN. Then add sub accounts through the PS3 on the accounts tab. The problem I ran into with this is each user needed it's own email address. I ended up using my work email for one and my daughters email for hers. It's a bit of a hassle to set up but it is possible.

Also make sure for their account you write down their PW('s). I have no idea what my kids PW's are (they don't either lol I set them up) but if anything happens and we can't automatically log in we'll have to go through a process of changing them.

Edit; Also note that for some games if you set chat to "off" on the sub-accounts they won't be able to play certain games online. (modnation and LBP to name a few.)

So, I just moved, and finally had time to get some gaming in yesterday. Before I moved, I had my PS3 hooked to a five channel home theater setup. Since I moved, I haven't had time to hook up the system, so I have the PS3 going straight to the TV via HDMI. While playing a few different games, every time I noticed a loud sound (explosion, gunshot, shouting, etc), the sound is crackling, like the speakers are blown. To double check, I put in a Blu-ray (Generation Kill), and watched a battle scene with no distortion at all.

I tried googling this, and couldn't find anything relevant. Anyone seen or heard of this?

Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

So I'm about to make the jump to the dark side within the next few days. I'm selling my Xbox tonight and I came across an ad on Kijiji where a guy (who basically lives down the street from me) is selling an 80GB PS3 + 3 games and 2 controllers. I was going to just go and get a Slim on Tuesday when my mom pays me back for borrowing money to her, but I seen this ad for $250 and am tempted as hell to just go with it, even though it's a used fatty.

This is the image he posted:

So, should I wait and grab a new Slim, even though I might be a little limited in terms of my game library for the first week or so, or should I get this one and have plenty of extra cash to spend on games/accessories?

Reason I ask is because I've heard of the YLOD and how it's mainly an issue with the fat models, so I figured I'd ask you guys how safe it would be to get this specific model.

EDIT: Also, the 3 games are Killzone 2, Terminator Salvation and Ghostbusters. He said for an extra 100 he'd add the rest of his 15 games listed, but I'm going to try to see if he'll switch out Ghostbusters and Terminator for both Uncharted's.

And one more thing to add. There's some kind of electronics store (which I've never heard of) selling a 60GB backwards compatible PS3 with the original box, manuals, 1 controller and a 90 day warranty for 185. This one looks like a no-brainer to me, the only issue is this store is pretty far out from where I live and I'd need to get a ride somehow.

Anyways, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Go Slim BnG. Go Slim. There are some good deals going where you get 50.00 in credit to the respective stores.

Are the benefits of the Slim really that great? I'm just thinking that it might be better for me to go with a cheaper, fat model (while also making sure it's in good condition even though it's used) so I'll be able to get into a lot of the games I've been wanting to play right off the bat.

Also, I could probably flip the fat system and sell it after I get it, then buy a Slim bundle because from the looks of things, PS3's sell like hotcakes. I know it was a bitch for me to sell my old gen 360, but it seems like any type of PS3 ad that isn't broken gets a ton of activity.

Is there some kind of official Sony warranty I can buy if I get a used fatty? I think I remember you guys mentioning a Best Buy warranty in the past, but I'm not sure if that's still going and if it's a US-only thing either.

I'm biased but yes the benefits really are that great.

                    I went through 5 fattys

1 I bought that crapped out 3 refurbs that crapped out and I traded the last refurb for a slim before it died on me.

Other then the YLOD issues the number one reason like the slim much better is after a while the fattys get really loud, really loud. I've had my slim since launch and it's still super quiet.

Again this is my 100% biased opinion because of my experiences with the fattys.

Edit: and LMAO at maple syrup....or is that poutine gravy?

                      Maple syrup.

But yeah, noise isn't too much of an issue to me. I had one of the early 20GB 360's with the silver plated disc drive and I think those have been known to be pretty loud, but it never bothered me.

It's just that damn YLOD issue that makes me hesitant. I don't think it's as widespread as the RROD, but I think it's still a pretty significant problem. I did ask the guy how long he's had the system, so I'll see what he says since I think age is a factor. If there's some way I can get the system protected, even though it's used, then I think I'll just go ahead with this system for now. But if I can't, then IDK. I do already have one foot in the door though, lol.

True. Are the size of files similar to 360, or is there a bigger difference with PS3? I know there are game installs for games like GT5 and MGS4, so that probably doesn't help, lol.

Coming from someone who had a 20GB 360 though, 80GB seems pretty big to me. I could be wrong.

And BTW, thanks for the help chef. You're making this a lot easier.

Those usually run from 2gb-5gb installs. Not full game though.

I have 120gb slim and have about 15 gigs left. I looked the other day and was quite surprised at how much I'd used.

I recently did what you are about to do (sold 360 after buying my PS3)...and couldn't be happier.
If it were me,what I quoted above would be reason enough NOT to go with a "fattie". I guess I would go for the "peace of mind" instead of getting more games right off,as it seems (in the research I did before buying) all the issues the PS3 had, were more centered around the older models.

Also,if you do buy new,you get a 1 year warranty from Sony, not sure if you would be able to do that on an older console (although you still may be able to).

IMO....there are just to many "what if's" when buying a used PS3...I would look on youtube if I were you,and you'll notice that the PS3 models that had the issues were the older ones....I haven't seen or heard anything bad about the slims as of yet.
People are for reviews if it backs their argument, and against them when they don't.

when this happens change the video input away from HDMI then turn it back. See if that works.
