I started to feel like that, but using Brave and Default (mostly Brave) got me through that fairly easily. Brave is high-risk for sure, but it can also take out the biggest threat to your party if you focus a bunch of attacks on it.

Actually, the first boss fight (so to speak, with the WM and Monk)...

Which difficulty are you guys playing on? I went Normal because I didn't want to punish myself with this game (my time with the demo was a bit rough), but I was wondering how much tougher Hard is. So far I'm not finding Normal too bad at all, although I am playing a high-risk style with my Brave attacks. So far, nothing has really made me pay for it.

I can already see status attacks being a pretty big deal in this game, considering they carry over between battles. But they might be a bit more useful to the party too because of how they work. Blind has been pretty useless in a lot of recent FF's, but in this game's combat system it affects the number of hits per turn somebody gets. So, casting Blind could be the difference between getting hit once (for little damage) and four times (which could be a KO on a mage). I've already had that work against me, even in the first dungeon - Blind is no fun to get hit with in this game.

Not really seeing the point of the town rebuilding yet - the nemeses are far beyond my level and unchallengable right now, and the shops I'm building sell extremely weak items. Maybe the items get better as the stores level up. Either way, I'm glad you can do the Net Friends thing to add workers - I started with 5 from OS and I think I'm up to 10 now.

One other little thing I like which I wish would be displayed in more RPG's - you can see a character's base stats in parentheses right beside their actual ones (after adding equipment). It's much easier to look at and assign a job to a character's strengths instead of having to de-equip everything.

BTW, my 3DS friend code is 3282-3168-7510 if anyone wants to add me for this game.

Yeah, I took a step back from the game for a minute or two.

The Red Mage guy pretty much took my face and tore it off twice in a row when that fight shouldn't be super difficult. I need to do something different with him.

So after a hiatus from my 3DS I think I am ready to come back again.

What good turn based RPG's are out? Prefer some like FF.

I know Fire Emblem is one I hear a lot about and is Bowsers Inside Stories pretty good as well?

Bravely Default which is Final Fantasy in everything but the name. Turned based combat and job classes. Demo up on the E-shop.

Yup. Bravely default for the old-school turn-based RPG feel.

Fire Emblem for the turn based "Tactics RPG" feel. Both are fantastic for what they are.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is another option.

Speaking of, still plugging along on Easy. About 5 hours in now. Getting the hang of combat and am looking forward to fusing demons (have a feeling I need to do so soon as my current party needs more strength). Story is starting to unfold; pretty interesting turns so far.

I usually don't play RPG's, so this is a departure for me, but I am really enjoying it.

How do you guys feel about using Bravely Second? By itself I don't have any problem using it (that is, I wouldn't consider it "cheating" myself out of the difficulty and experience), but I'd certainly never spend real money to recover the points for it (nor can I imagine ever needing 3 shots of it in rapid succession, such that I wouldn't recover those points in time).

As an old-school type gamer there's a couple of other lines I won't cross too, like auto-save and lowering the difficulty or the encounter rate mid-game (though I might raise it temporarily if I run into a need to grind). Teleport stones exist for a reason, and they're supposed to be my ticket out of a hopeless dungeon situation, not zeroing the encounter rate and zipping out of there. I'm glad that the options are there though - those anti-frustration features open the game up to an audience that wouldn't touch it otherwise.

I may use Bravely Second every now and again (since they're free points just for sleep mode) because it removes the 9999 damage limit.

I do the encounter raising/lowering as well, it just takes the place of Repel/Max Repels in other games.

Good point on the repels - I hadn't considered that. At some point in Pokemon you'll certainly have enough of those to never have a random encounter again, and even older games usually have some item that manipulates/zeroes the encounter rate.

Im in chapter 5 and Ive never used Bravely Second. But you're already doing more than 9999 damage? I thought you were up to the rose mage? I've only recently been able to hit 9999.\

As for the min max encounter rate. I think its the best thing to happen to a JRPG in forever. It helps with grinding, and helps with eliminating tedious travel when you are over-leveled and back tracking. Increasing the encounter rate to 100% plus auto battling plus speeding the game x4 is the greatest for grinding.
