Even on this board you see people having fond remembrances of a time when we'd have 3+sports games of every genre to choose from - despite the fact that the market no longer supports that model (other factors contribute of course). Many gamers nowadays expect their titles to all be AAA+ or close to it, or they'll kill it before it even gets a chance to start. Or are happy to see a decent/good title fail, if it wasn't exactly what they wanted. Constant comparisons, so one title must be clearly/definitively better than another similar title.

While I think some of the criticism of the Xbox One is legitimate/warranted, much of the overreaction by hardcore gamers is ridiculous. I can understand looking out for one's best interests, but too often hardcore gamers - especially the extremely hardcore - seem willing to cut off their noses to spite their face. Microsoft said before this press conference that this showing wouldn't be about the games, yet gamers are mad... because they hyped themselves into believing it would be about the games anyway. Or should've been more about the games.

While I dislike the 24hr online requirement (technically my machine's always connected anyway) or Kinect requirement (truth is I've wanted to get one), the only thing I truly hate is the direction Microsoft is taking with used games and the secondary market. But I think that's being driven by the bigger game publishers more than anything, so I figure the PS4 will have something similar in place. The market has evolved and hardcore gamers need to realize that. Last gen while hardcore gamers were obsessing over whether the PS3 or 360 was more powerful, Nintendo came in with the Wii and became an absolute phenomenon. Same with the 1st gen Kinect; hardcore gamers declared it dead on arrival because it wasn't "for them". Everything can't just be about the hardcore gamers' concerns, or these systems will fail imo.
I am not a hardcore gamer, really. All I play is sports games and some strategy games on the PC. I haven't played a FPS on a console in awhile and only play BFBC2 on the PC once every few weeks.

I just don't care for almost everything the Xbox One is offering. I want a console to game on, not for all the other BS that I will never use.

Indeed, but it would be nice to have the option to turn this "feature" off. I mean, I don't find it particularly difficult to push a button (or a touch-device in the case of the newer 360s). Are people that lazy?

Microsoft Not Abandoning 360 for at Least 5 Years

So there's some good Microsoft news from their company, only problem is it's not anything to do with the One.

And that's to be expected. Imagine the uproar if they came out and said they weren't after the XBone dropped.

That being said, this thread is my entertainment - I wish it was busier around here on the weekends.

Im staying neutral until closer to the release dates of both consoles. Right now there is just so much gray area in certain features that I dont know what is true and what is false anymore. Once the Microsoft conference heat is cooled down and E3 is finished I will start deciding but until then I can not wait until E3.

From a business perspective/case study, this is going to be a fascinating next 6 months.

As an owner of both current gen consoles, I am really curious to see how Microsoft corrects this consumer disconnect onslaught that obviously was unexpected and blindsided them.

I was neutral and even leaned towards Xbox until the always on kinect info started leaking. I haven't owned a Sony console before. Now I'll wait and see what happens at E3 and determine whether I buy a PS4 or upgrade a CPU.

Always smile when I see cloud discussed this way. Distributed computing is nothing new. Not even remotely so, and despite various attempts of making main stream, it simply hasn't cut it. Back in the 70 & 80's mainframes were the big thing for business, with remote terminals for access of users. Then, in the mid to late 90's, there was a big push by Sun/IBM for remote computing via 'network computers' (anyone remember those?)? And now, a good 10+ years later, they've rebranded it cloud computing. Yes there were differences in each remote processing model, but all focused on offloading processes to a remote computer, and thus far things have always gone back to the PC (which is what Microsoft truly wants).

Will it make it this time? Maybe, maybe not, but definitely think some things are here to stay for the better such as remote storage, which is a nice to have for console gaming, if only so we don't have to transport our own saves to others houses.

I've also seen this type of talk backfire. Sim City said they had to be always-online because their servers ("the cloud") did computations that only the servers could handle to make a quick playing game, when that fact has been proven false by modders of the game....
The problem with offloading calls to any remote server is the network delay. Even if it's milliseconds, that's a huge computational time from a processing standpoint. As a developer, I personally wouldn't offload any processing. I'd only make calls to retrieve remote content, and then I'd do it with as few calls as possible, and in such a manner that the user doesn't know about it (startup, loading screen, background process, etc).

                          Re: Xbox One

I've been thinking. Microsoft should develop some type of lending system for people to their friends. It's tied to a code you get with the game when you buy it, so why not have a system where if that code is accessed on another console, you can authorize the profile trying to access it to be able to play. It would disable it on your console while they are in possession, but still have the first person as the primary owner of the game so they can reclaim their access code at any time which then disables it on the other console (which would also get rid of those "friends" who steal your games you lend them).

If they still wanted to make sure the devs got their share they want, they could possibly put a limit on the amount of time you could lend it to another profile before it automatically transfers back or charges them a small amount until it's returned.

Lastly, perhaps they could use this system to let you trade directly with other users. When you verify that code is going to be linked to the other user, perhaps it gives you a choice to lend or "gift" the code to them. At that point, it could just charge the buyer like $10 (the price of one of the current activation codes) after the game is gifted to them. Typically people who sell games charge a price that will be more than what they would get from Gamestop/Other used game sellers, but less than what Gamestop/Other used game sellers charge to buy used, so you'd still probably be able to get a good amount from these trades as a seller.

Just a thought I had. MS probably doesn't have this idea, but it could help from a PR standpoint for them somewhat at least. I'm sure there would still be a lot of people complaining, but at least this way you could feel more like you own the license at least.

Microsoft is also reportedly mulling over the idea of special "exemption codes" that could be provided to those in Internet-free scenarios, like active-duty soldiers.
