The only time it's on the console maker is when they run & host the servers. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that DRM "on-disc" is entirely managed by the console manufacturer (in your example, Sony).
That publisher could say, even for this single player game, you have to "log in to our online pass first", essentially disabling the folks that have their PS4 off the network. But that exists today in 360 and PS3 land. The point is, Microsoft requires you to phone home, PS4 disc DRM does not.
One thing that maybe someone else might've caught, can you play the PS4 games entirely off the hard drive? Or does it still need to be in to play?
In many cases with PS they don't host servers, the publisher does IE:
EA, UBI, Activision

Re: Xbox One
I really wish we'd stop with this "pure gaming console" fallacy too...
No matter what MS or Sony or anyone else says both of these consoles are the same and do the same things...
Now where MS dropped the ball big time is in the fact that I believe they truly thought consumers were ready to latch on and embrace this entire "all in one entertainment hub" idea instead of the old "video game console" adage and it blew up in their faces...
Look I love games and gaming to death but I'm not naive either...I understand that consoles nowadays are an I'm cool with it, I happen to like a lot of the integrations on the entertainment side...
I just can't wrap my head around the PS4 being more of a "gamer's console" than the XBO just as much a the same with the 360 and PS3. I guess it's all in how it's worded and what people want to believe...Patrick Mahomes > GodComment

It's all about which console has what games, and how many more features that console has for gamers.I just can't wrap my head around the PS4 being more of a "gamer's console" than the XBO just as much a the same with the 360 and PS3. If one console has a whole boat load of games which the 'old-school' gamers love, and the other has a bunch of titles which are less focused, it's the first console that becomes the 'Gamers choice'. As well, if one console had in-built recording and streaming, that would be huge.
It's just the way the so called 'console war' has developed. It's no longer about enjoying the game for what it is but comparing yourself against others.. your apparent 'skill' level in games, and then picking out every feature of the console you purchased to make yourself and your side seem supreme. It is ridiculous.
This DRM thing, it's unfortunate. But at the end of the day, just enjoy the game you bought. But people will still continue to boast how much bigger their stick is.

Re: Xbox One
Which is actually something I don't understand. Why does it even matter to people? Playstation has been the system I've used since the very first Playstation came about. But with that said, there are things that the XBOX and 360 simply did better. You can love your system and still understand why people would be drawn to the other system. At the end of the day, we're just playing video games. It's all about which console has what games, and how many more features that console has for gamers.

Im a gamer.
I like to buy new games.
I like to trade in those games to any retailer and buy new games with that money.
I like to rent games.
I like to buy used games.
I like to play my console even if my internet is not working.
With one console I can only do one of those things. With another I can do all of them. Thats how one is more gamer friendly and how another isnt.Last edited by aholbert32; 06-11-2013, 02:31 PM.Comment

I can't quote the bottom of the page but it says Microsoft will enable gamers to share their games & trade their games
3rd party Devs can opt in or out
Update on June 19, 2013: As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog. Some of this information is no longer accurate — please check here for the latest. With our modern architecture, Xbox One games will load more quickly, will be always accessible from the cloud, […]
This to me sounds like MS published games will not have DRM but it's up to 3rd party devs
Not to mention they will continue to look @ these policies & may change them @ anytime

"participating retailers" is troubling. Could be normal retail language or could be restrictions regarding where and how I can trade in games.I can't quote the bottom of the page but it says Microsoft will enable gamers to share their games & trade their games

This is true. Right now we know GS is in, but what happens to my buddy on the corner who's business thrives on trades
This I'm hoping MS comes up with a system that helps all stores & not just the big box stores
