heh....it's Windows 8 all over again...only difference now is that it has competition...

Well, if anything Win 8 is changing some things to make it a bit more user friendly...so maybe later on Xbone will do the same....by that time I will get the Xbone and the games will be cheaper....hopefully...

Technically Windows is it's own biggest competition there.

I don't know anyone that is on Windows 8, with anyone building a machine (myself included) still opting for 7. 7 is a masterpiece, though, once you cut out the BS UAC stuff.

The changes are too little, too late. I was hoping Win8 would do the Vista thing where they realized it was an abomination and release a good OS (Vista --> Win7 was amazing) but it looks like they are still trying to kill off the desktop in Win9.

That's neither here nor there though.

          Right.

Another thing that REALLY bothers me in any argument is comparing the XBone (or PS4, though that comparison is never drawn) to Steam and PC gaming.

Steam isn't the only way to get games on the PC, nor will it ever be like MS is doing with the consoles. There are plenty of people out there (I am not one of them) that hate Steam. Any game I can get on Steam, I can get elsewhere without DRM restrictions and for just as cheap, if not cheaper. I use steam for a lot of my games due to the centralization of it all, but even then a lot of the times it's just launching the games from Steam after I've installed the no-DRM version.

For those that want to see what kind of sales the PC gamers can get without DRM, check out http://www.gog.com/ right now.

Ryse is the only game that has me wanting an X1. Titanfall looks pretty good too but I have a feeling that I'd bore of that game after a month or so.

Microsoft is saying Sony isnt a threat, which shows their arrogance.
And their trying to "educate" us on how DRM is a good things. Showing they're blind to what people want.
They also ignore the fact that most military members dont use the DoD network to play online. again showing that they're blind

As to your first point... Sony isn't really a threat. They are going after different demographics.

MS is taking the gamble that less gamers will buy the system (conceding that niche of the public to Sony) while getting their box into more homes. That or they expect core gamers to get both. It may be arrogant, but not due to them considering Sony not a threat.

Also, it's looking more and more like Steam is going to enable game sharing in the near future. It'll be interesting to see what kind of checks they have - and how good/bad it will make MS look in comparison, considering MS is saying the 24h checks are a necessity for sharing.

You said you want to play online with people you know. The people you know are getting a ps4. You seem to be the odd one out in that group.

Heck, you could just get both and plug the quads HDMI into the XBone if those features are that important to you. I'm also not sure that the PS4 won't have some form of Skype or chat program. The Vita has it currently if I'm not mistaken.
I have both pre-ordered, will make my decision closer to release and I will sell the other one for profit, but I rather have the XO.

                            Re: Xbox One

A well written article about why MS and indie gaming still don't go together, no matter what they say. Also why big publishers aren't helpful at all to them.

                            And a snippet.

To explain why, I caught up with Brian Provinciano, who released the game Retro City Rampage on damned near every service and console there is. He gave an illuminating talk about what he learned from the experience, and he’s become an outspoken critic of Microsoft’s policies. His platform summary for Xbox Live Arcade was short, and to the point: “Most expensive, a bottleneck, damaged PR, hindered other platforms’ success.”

“Self-publishing basically means that the developer can release their game directly to the stores without a middleman,” Provinciano explained. “We're able to sign straight distribution agreements with them, we get a simple revshare, and that's that.” The problem is that Microsoft does not allow developers to self-publish, you have to have a third-party publisher, or you can be published by Microsoft Studios.

So you have to pitch Microsoft Studios if you want to be on Xbox Live Arcade, and the negotiations and contract portion of this process can take six to nine months, according to Provinciano, if not more.

“Like any publisher, Microsoft Studios takes more from you than a simple platform revshare,” he said. “In addition to their publisher cut, Microsoft Studios also requires at minimum a timed exclusivity, so you won't be able to release on other platforms day one.”

So you end up with less of the revenue for yourself, Microsoft gets a cut as the publisher and the platform holder, and you have to be exclusive to the platform for a set amount of time. Or you can go through a third-party publisher, since Microsoft will only allow companies that release retail games to have slots on Xbox Live.

While this may be true. Sony is their competitor and is taking customers from them. to not see them as a threat seems incredibly foolish.
