Problem is it's a video game system first and foremost. I know that's becoming less and less of the main focus for both Sony and MS, but it still just seems dumb to me. To not let people play the best and latest games is like giving someone a TV and saying you can't watch the best channels.

I agree. But depending on how they advertise (and differentiating between the two options would be key) I think it'd sell. They'd have to market the watered down one as a competitor to something like the Roku or the Vizio Co-Star.

It makes a lot of sense, just comes down to how well they execute it, pricing, etc.

A lot of people are using 360s for media, even if they don't plat a lot of games the casual/media SKU could be a reason to upgrade anyways.

Yeah, I think Microsoft's last data said most people are using it for Netflix, etc. I think it's a good idea for them, depending on the pricing like mestevo said.

Hence the two options. Here's what we know, video games are popular, and these set top boxes, such as apple tv are popular. Also, the apps that the 360 currently provides are popular. Which means this is potentially a terrific marketing strategy, if executed correctly. You cover two markets and two markets usually equals more $$

They have a wildly successful video game console being used more for media than for games. To charge those people hundreds of more dollars to get them to upgrade to the next generation of their ecosystem is to essentially ignore the most popular usage for the platform because they're not going to bother. They have to provide an option, and if done right they won't be able to make them fast enough.

We've got a Roku, 360, and BD player in the bedroom. Roku gets the most use because it's always on, don't have to wait for it to boot, apps to load, etc. It just works. 360 in the living room serves all the media there, just so we don't have another box and remote to keep track of.

About time. I was thinking about it today and I see some pros and cons here:

Cons:

- Disappointing for those who have built up a huge stack of 360 games and have yet to play them...*
- Not good for series like NBA 2K and FIFA, who have really hit their stride recently.
- Likely to be $400 out of my wallet
- Most would agree that the 360, RRoD aside, has been a tremendous console. It will be disappointing to see it go.

Pros:

- ... This won't matter if the system has backwards computability*.
- Good news for series like NCAA and Madden which could definitely use a makeover. At this point, we have to wonder whether or not its even worth it for NCAA to implement a who new engine only to give it up a year later?
- Good news for college basketball fans? Possibly. Most would agree that if a college basketball game were to happen, it wouldn't be until a new system came out.
- For gamers, it has to be exciting news when you consider that a lot of the limitations that exist in todays game may be fixed with a new console.
- Good for gaming in general. As everyone knows, the market has been down for a little bit and I think that has a lot to do with the new consoles hanging over like a black cloud a little bit. I'm not sure developers were too keen on the idea of developing a game and have it come out right at the end of a consoles life span.
- Could Valve get back into the picture? We'd have to think yes. Maybe a Half-Life game? More likely, a Left for Dead 3 considering how hot the "zombie" market is right now.
- No more paying for Xbox Live? Its certainly possible. With the PS4 likely to follow in the PS3's footsteps, I'd be surprised if Microsoft is gutsy enough to rival Sony with everyone have to pay an additional online fee as they do now.

No BC for me just means no buy at launch. I'm one of those "just give me a gaming machine" people.
So I'll just hold off until there's a good selection of games for it. Might lead to a price reduction etc.. By the time I buy.

No biggie.

I'm the same way. The only system I ever had at launch was the N64 and I plan on waiting it out for a while after the new systems drop.

BC plus 400 or less is a yep. At lease then I can play 360 games while waiting on new 720 games on it.

I'd guess it will launch at $400-$450. If $400 I don't see any way that I won't buy it, unless of course, there is no BC. I have too many games still to play, and I don't want those to go to waste.

If it is BC, that is a huge selling point at launch. I know I have a collection of games sitting on my shelf that I have yet to dive into. I don't want to lose that ability right out the gate.

Now another big concern for me is price point. If it is 400 for the bare bones model then I will just wait. I have a 360 slim now with 250 HD, I'm not going to go backwards for a new system.

There is plenty of options to weight. Mainly because the current systems I feel are plenty powerful enough still. Look at the graphics of Halo 4, GTA 5, NBA2k13 for instance.

Faster load times, more on screen characters, higher poly count, etc is all fine and dandy but does not sell me on "HAVING" to have a new system "NOW".

The system, currently, is being referred to by several code names, online, including "720", "Durango", and "Loop". This is awesome news for gamers, serious and casual alike. In a world where reports are coming out saying that the upcoming movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is said to be so sharp, immersive, and hyper-realistic that watching it can make some people to feel motion sick - the idea of a next-gen game platform is certainly exciting news! To those ends, this next-gen Xbox seems, according to early leaked specs, to be a dream come true.

In fact, you'll probably hear it here first, Microsoft has taken out a Patent that would allow their game system to project images into the room you are in, thus creating an even more immersive experience:

According to a patent document, Microsoft is working on technology that will enable its next-gen videogames console to project 3D game environments onto the walls of a room. The tech is linked to the forthcoming Kinect 3D glasses - rumoured to be called Fortaleza - which will presumably allow players to see the environments in 3D.

The tech has been described in Microsoft's patent reads: “Interactive media experiences, such as video games, are commonly delivered by a high quality, high resolution display. Such displays are typically the only source of visual content, so that the media experience is bounded by the bezel of the display.”

"Even when focused on the display, the user may perceive architectural and decorative features of the room the display is in via the user’s peripheral vision. Such features are typically out of context with respect to the displayed image, muting the entertainment potential of the media experience further, because some entertainment experiences engage the user’s situational awareness (e.g., in experiences like the video game scenario described above), the ability to perceive motion and identify objects in the peripheral environment (i.e., in a region outside of the high resolution display) may intensify the entertainment experience."

Microsoft's Xbox 720 will unveil a new version of Kinect, a Blu-ray drive, and an A/V port for watching and recording broadcast TV, at least according to details leaked by Xbox World.

Other features will include directional audio, an input and output for watching and recording TV shows, and an "innovative controller," noted gaming news site ComputerAndVideoGames.com (CVG). Last February, Xbox World said that the redesigned controller would come with a built-in HD touch screen.

Codenamed Durango, the new Xbox would be powered by a CPU with "four hardware cores, each divided into four logical cores" and 8GB of RAM.

Kinect 2 so accurate it can lip read

Microsoft plans to release a next-generation Kinect device so accurate it can lip read, sources have told Eurogamer.

Kinect 2 will come bundled with future Xbox consoles, we understand.

The intention is that Kinect 2 will offer improved motion sensing and voice recognition.

One development source told Eurogamer that Kinect 2 will be so powerful it will enable games to lip read, detect when players are angry, and determine in which direction they are facing.

Kinect 2 can track the pitch and volume of player voices and facial characteristics to measure different emotional states.

The above article goes on to state that the current Kinect technology is limited because of how Xbox's deal with multiple USB connections ( the controllers, and so forth" which keeps the data speed low. But making the machine with an internal, already installed Kinect? That speeds things up considerably...

The Xbox 720, on the other hand, may be “the most powerful of all the next-gen consoles.” Gaming Bolt said that the new Microsoft console may be 4-6 times more powerful than the Wii U and 2-3 times more so than the PS4/Omni. A soft launch is rumored to kick off in November 2013, with the actual release taking place in the summer of 2014.
