Ironicly you're referring to the rumored reveal, which we've known for a while wasn't happening this month.

If the price rumors are true, no way I'm buying this thing anytime soon. Xbox Live subscriptions look to be horribly overpriced for the limited amount I use it. In addition, $500 for the new console and ($300 with subscription)? No.

I just don't play my 360 enough anymore to warrant this (CH 2K8 and NBA 2K13 is it and maybe NCAAF 14 when it comes around). PC gaming FTW.

Polygon: The next Xbox rethinks DRM, Achievements and Xbox Live friends

Microsoft is also trying to come up with a system for video sharing though all of the details are still being locked down. According to our sources, currently the next Xbox will capture your gameplay as if it were a DVR, allowing you to go back and select highlights. That function can be turned on or off, or a player can set up the console to automatically capture a recording when certain in-game events occur, like a headshot or collecting a specific achievement. Auto capturing those "magic moments" will be a feature only available on next-gen games.

Those videos can then be uploaded directly from the console to social sites, like YouTube, for sharing.
Sources tell Polygon that the next Xbox will indeed have some form of an always-on requirement. That will be both to support the suite of non-gaming entertainment applications that will be launched alongside the console, like streaming video services, but also as a possible anti-piracy tool. Currently, the console will support digital rights management and anti-piracy checks using an internet connection. Under Microsoft's current guidelines, which may still be changed, the decision of whether a game will require an internet connection to work and if that is a one-time authentication or a constant connection, will be left up to individual publishers.
With the next Xbox, developers and publishers will be able to add more achievements to a game after launch, without the need to add DLC. This is designed specifically to allow developers to tweak player behavior, perhaps urging players to check out specific areas of a game or get past a difficult spot. Next-gen achievements can also be tied to broader events, like a weekend challenge or a communal goal, like contributing a set number of kills to the bigger goal of 10,000 kills over one weekend. Companies can also create cross-title achievements, like awarding points for finishing the first chapter in two different and unrelated games published by the same company. Some of these bigger, cross-title, communal achievements will be a requirement for all titles.
Microsoft is also looking to adjust the way Xbox Live functions to more closely align it with the way other social networks, like Twitter or Facebook, work. The next-generation Live won't have a cap on the number of friends a person can have. The way players add friends will also change. Now instead of it being a two-way friendship only, people can choose to follow one another, sort of like Twitter.

See I strictly play online other then a franchise here and there. Since I'm already paying for Xbox Live so it's a good deal for me to go with the $300.

Maybe i'm having a brain freeze but a little confused about the subscription deal. I thought it also said 10$ a month with the 300$ one which would be 120.00 a year. Its 50$ a year now unless I heard something wrong its going up big time...but guess it will all get answered next month

The math isn't supposed to add up to the cost of service, it's the cost of the convenience of paying less, in addition to the service. $500 out of pocket before the cost of live and $300 and a monthly subscription that includes Live could be the difference between waiting years to own one and standing in line release day for some people.

Even if it means being less financially responsible, paying people will eat up the subscription model should it prove to be true.

Its paying $500 now or $540 over two years. If you're going to get Live anyway then the $300 is a deal cause you're looking at $600 vs $540 over the first two years.

I wonder what MS is going to do when people stop paying for Live. Are they going to have Repo people show up to take back the console? They will most likely ban the box if they don't get it back. This is going to really hurt the used market. MS is going to have to provide something to lookup the serial # to determine whether it is "owned" or "rented".

What? They already have a subscription model with the 360 for $99. This isn't anything new.

That started last year. If MS is going to start it at launch, you will potentially have a much larger group of people getting it as it will be cheaper than purchasing it and buying Live.

We also don't know if these boxes are truly ever owned. Most deals like this in TV, the boxes are not "owned" even though you pay a fee to get it. Do you have to return the box when you end service, yes, but people don't always do that.

Take DTV as an example, you don't own the box unless you pay a lot upfront, when you cancel you return it or pay for it. DTV provides a way to check the serial # of the box to see if it is owned or leased before you buy it.

MS will have to do the same thing. If they don't, you would never know until you got the box and a month or 2 went by. The seller could continue to pay for 1 month and everything would be fine, then bam they stop paying and the box it banned.

Which is why you have a contract, etc. I don't see MS going into the leasing business and haven't seen any rumors of it.
