    Re: Xbox One

The EA pre-rendered stuff, I thought, was trash. It didn't even look that good (can't say I'm surprised).

MS does sound like they might be doing some back-peddling for damage control over used game fees and the various always-connected requirements.

I'm waiting until I see the games, particularly the exclusives, before making a final judgment on the system. The TV stuff doesn't appeal to me but there are features on every console nowadays that aren't for everyone while meaning to appeal to a wider, more casual audience.

          1) used games; I understand the desire to get those dollars by developers and to a certain extend the console manufacturer - however I'm still blown away that it's going to happen in the way that they want for the most part.

I understand software is different than a lamp or a desk or a magic bullet. HOWEVER, I am actually a little mystified that the prospect of charging money for a 2nd hand buyer to play is even LEGAL! Where is the justification in all of this really? When I bought my used Jeep years ago, - did the maker get any money? NO! I just don't see why a game is any different. I remember selling all my old VHS's tapes in a garage sale and sort of wish I had done that with all my dvd's... how are games so fundamentally different than other products to be able to legally justify consumers paying for the same product twice.

A major thing to note here is their own justification that "those dollars belong to us" ... no they don't. The used buyer didn't care to buy your product when it was new at the new price, they wanted to buy it later when nobody cares anymore and get it way cheaper from someone who no longer cared to own it - thus transferring their ownership to the used guy. There is no NEW product being sold here, just someone else's undesired property.

Further to that, the real issue with $ being lost is not the secondary market. It's piracy, it begins and ends there for reals. If everyone paid for their copy of a game on xbox360 - would there be any revenue issues? No.

Finally - I'm aware of "licenses" and I'm aware I might not interpret "property" in the way the law currently does, but in the case that I am "wrong" I fundamentally disagree with it and think such a "law" might be fundamentally "unlawful" lol Currently I can buy a CD, listen to it for a month, and give it to my friend (or sell it to him) and he can do as he wishes with it.

I look at it like an ecosystem of sorts haha, I buy new games, I trade them in when I don't want them for credit towards more new games. The used guys who loves deals and don't need new stuff (I think lose out on fun times) complete the cycle. So if I can't sell my 'property' than I never actually own it do it and thus in a sense shouldn't pay for it as if I do (which is currently the case in terms of prices etc) An interesting thought is this could fuel piracy on a philosophical level and perhaps create new pirates? ...maybe.

** final note on that before I forget is every single game must have a demo and have a try before you buy aspect if they are going to get their way and kill the rental market!

          2) Always online: I'm undecided literally. I see privacy issues, but also don't see the benefit. We really need it explained very clearly WHY it would be TOTALLY AWESOME to have it always be online. If there is no such justification...then there is no legit reason to do it - they may want to monitor us which is totally unreasonable and enough to get me to jump ship. Currently it's really unclear and confusing.

In the end, I'm not excited, not pissed off, but overall it's more of a "whatever" feeling which isn't good.
Isnt it just great that you will STILL be able to trade in your copy of your digital game BACK to Microsoft for credit and buy a new game....just all from your console and not through Gamestop.

You arent losing your right to sell the product, they are just limiting where you can sell it at.

The market changes and evolves, if you dont want to purchase the product...no one cares. There is an entire generation of new gamers that have never seen a console release that will eat this up.

Both the Xbox and PS4 will do just fine with the current market. Market and strats have changed, you either embrace the change or move along.

Always on. It's always listening to you. "In the absence of any internet connection, you're going to be able to play Blu-ray movies (Uh, thanks?). There are likely going to be some game modes that you'll be able to continue to play but the Xbox One was really designed to take advantage of the Modern era." "May be the last console that you'll ever need to buy."

Haven't read this entire thread. They are pretty much saying you will be always online without just coming right out and saying it. You will have to have an internet connection to play games on this system, period. After all, how would they enforce their drm solution without it? So too bad for all those people still without internet, or even the people with internet whose connections goes out for whatever reason. You'll be able to watch your blu-rays at least.
              PS: You guys are great.

Nice article by Eurogamer : Phil Harrison tries (again) to clarify game ownership, second-hand sales and always-online in Xbox One

So, think about how you use a disc that you own of an Xbox 360 game," he began. "If I buy the disc from a store, I use that disc in my machine, I can give that disc to my son and he can play it on his 360 in his room. We both can't play at the same time, but the disc is the key to playing. I can go round to your house and give you that disc and you can play on that game as well.

"What we're doing with the digital permissions that we have for Xbox One is no different to that. If I am playing on that disc, which is installed to the hard drive on my Xbox One, everybody in my household who has permission to use my Xbox One can use that piece of content. [So] I can give that piece of content to my son and he can play it on the same system."
"I can come to your house and I can put the disc into your machine and I can sign in as me and we can play the game," he explained.

"The bits are on your hard drive. At the end of the play session, when I take my disc home - or even if I leave it with you - if you want to continue to play that game [on your profile] then you have to pay for it. The bits are already on your hard drive, so it's just a question of going to our [online] store and buying the game, and then it's instantly available to play.

"The bits that are on the disc, I can give to anybody else, but if we both want to play it at the same time, we both have to own it. That's no different to how discs operate today."
"We will have a system where you can take that digital content and trade a previously played game at a retail store," Harrison said. "We're not announcing the details of that today, but we will have announced in due course."

"Our goal is to make it really customer-centric, really simple and really understandable and we will announce those details in due course."
                About always online :

"Some bits of the system will work offline," he said. "I think the key point to make is that Xbox One requires an internet connection, but it does not need to be connected all the time. We think that most of the biggest games on Xbox One and most of the games and experiences and services you want to use will be internet-connected."

"I think where people have anxiety understandably is what happens when the internet connection goes down for a few minutes or a few hours. On our side, with the infrastructure investments that we as Microsoft have made in Azure and Xbox Live dedicated servers that we will have for Xbox One, we are very confident that we have the infrastructure to support all of the players and all of the connections. And although it's not directly an Xbox issue, it's something Microsoft is proven to be really good at with Office 365."

I do own a TV, a Blu-Ray and an iPod that all give me the option of connected, though. Not one of them forces me and I can still use them when my connection is out, or I can bring them (obviously not the TV) somewhere that doesn't have a connection and still use them.

I don't think so. MS just wants a piece of the used gaming $$$ that all these companies get alone now. I bet there is an agreement in place with all these companies to continue the sale of used games, but now some of that profit goes to MS in some form. I can see Sony doing this as well, so we will find out all those details at E3.
