Looks like a couple agree with user 23. Unless you guys were simply referring to the micro usb cable itself only, which wasn't really the concern when I made my post. I agree any micro usb cable will work to charge the PS3 controller, but my biggest concern was finding a compatible ac wall adapter. The important component in reference is the ac wall adapter, not the usb micro cable.

For those that say or believe any wall ac outlet adapter will work to charge the PS3, it would be greatly appreciative if you guys can take a picture of that specific AC wall adapter that shows a PS3 controller being charged.

This would greatly help since ac wall adapters are probably cheaper than $10. Knowing a compatible alternative to Sony's ac wall adapter (MSRP $24.99, currently discontinued, but still available on ebay at about $10 dollars) would be great for future reference.

Note: As specified in my previous post, a PS4 controller will charge with any usb micro cable and any ac wall outlet adapter, while a PS3 controller is ridiculously specific. The Sony OEM charger is the only ac wall adapter that I have that will charge my PS3 controller.

Loving my PS4 so far, between The Show and The Last Of Us, I haven't touched my Xbox.

My one gripe though is I just don't love the controller, playing FPSers is a struggle for me. Hopefully some 3rd party controllers can start rolling out soon.

From what I understand, the DS3 requires a USB handshake in order to charge the controller. All of the chargers that you tried only use two of the four leads to charge a device...a DS3 needs all 4 to charge. Back in the day, it was likely a way to require you to purchase Playstation-only accessories or ones that were Sony-approved/licensed, but this doesn't seem to be the case for the DS4. Most, if not all, cell phone/accessory chargers do not have this capability. For your application, it appears your choices will be extremely limited to PlayStation accessories or something that can see the DS3 as a device, like a computer or something.

Any suggested input on a compatible alternative to the Sony OEM ac wall charger, specifically for the DS3/PS3 controller?

What is the technical description to one of these "usb handshake, four lead" ac wall chargers?

I tried running an internet search with the words "4 lead" and "usb" and "charger" and "ac wall" am coming up empty. Knowing there is a cheaper alternative and more importantly, something still produced by a manufacturer, would be great for future references.

Note: For anyone thinking, just buy one of those large official charging cradles ... the problem is they are bulky, an eye sore, pricey, not compatible with BOTH DS3 and DS4, and you can't simultaneously game while the DS3/DS4 are charging. The Sony OEM ac wall charger that I just bought takes care of ALL of these problems ... absolutely loving it. Still would love to know of a compatible alternative.

EDIT: Side note. A possible alternative failed the test. I have one of those ac powered usb hubs, namely the Best Buy Insignia 7 port hub. It doesn't necessarily charge the DS3/DS4 but does keep the DS3/DS4 still forever useable even when the battery is completely drained if and only if the usb hub is plugged directly into a computer (defeats my intended purpose and essentially turns your wireless controller into a wired controller). However, it fails to charge the DS3/PS3 controller/DS4 when the ac powered usb hub is plugged directly into the wall outlet/extension cord.

I've only owned my PS3 for a little over half a month, but considering the battery life of the DS3 I've only charged my controller twice and both times were while playing.

The DS4 really needs a charging dock because the battery life is laughable in that thing. I love the controller's design overall, but the battery is a big negative.

No idea, sorry...you may be searching for a white elephant. Short of running an active USB extension cable from a PC, I don't think there will be anything cheaper than what you have already found.

I bought this to charge my tablet and phone along with my bluetooth headset when it was on sale for about $9 bucks last year but this also charges my ps3 and ps4 controllers when it's connected to the 5v2.4a ports. Best tech buy outside of ps4 and htc one m8 phone.

Yes. I finished UC2 on Hard this weekend. I haven't decided if I want to jump into UC3 right away or pause and go through UC1 and 2 on Crushing and do some trophy clean up.

                        UC2 was phenomenal, but I've heard UC3 isn't as good as 1 or 2.

I'd go right into UC3 and finish out the series. It's still really good, just hard to compete with UC2, that game was near perfect for its time.

Sweet. An alternative to the Sony OEM ac wall charger?

Can't exactly make out from the pictures alone ... so it serves specifically as an ac wall charger to charge your DS3/PS3 controller exactly like the Sony OEM ac wall charger that I recently got? I would be able game while the PS3 dualshock is charging in my existing setup pictured below?
