    Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

When I get my PS4 Pro, since you guys have killed a bit of my buzz for it, I think I'd like to get like a special edition one, like not just a stock black but maybe a branded one with a game.

Can you guys think of what might be the first specially designed PS4 Pro version and for what franchise/game it might be?

RDR 2 would be my best guess.

I'm a visual person, so I'm going to have to see the Pro in action before I jump on board. I've said the same thing in the past though:

me: I don't need a blu-ray player, dvds are perfectly fine
*see's a Spiderman on blu-ray displayed at Best Buy, buys PS3 partly because of blu-ray player.

me: what's the big deal about 4k? My Plasma and LCD look great in HD.
*see's a 4K TV displayed at Best Buy, buys 4K TV

me: I don't need a PS4 Pro, my PS4 looks awesome and from what's been shown so far I haven't seen anything that has wow'd me.
        * ???
        My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

        Alabama Crimson Tide
        Green Bay Packers
        Boston Celtics

        New Orleans Pelicans

That would be awesome, a red PS4 Pro...what about Gran Turismo?

After I posted I stumbled upon the article that actually called out the 2 GPUs in the Pro, which makes more sense as to how it only uses one when in PS4 standard mode. Bummer. Still, being a big sports gamer we should see NBA2k17 support it fully. Madden....I guess probably not. Next spring the show.

Oh....one thing that I think will be important for all games is I think I saw that it will record full 1080P 60fps gameplay now and stream 1080 to PC if you use that feature.

Anything else I am missing that makes it worthwhile without a 4k tv?

I am thinking of creating a new PSN account. I don't like that my real name and first letters of my last name are in my ID. I guess I would lose all my digital purchases though, right? Probably a dumb, no brainer question, sorry about that.

Guess I just have to decide how much it does or doesn't bother me and what that's worth.

I think you're worrying too much. Just make sure you have no credit/debit cards linked to your account. I've had my PS4 for about 18 months now and nothing has ever happened to my account.

No need to assume anything here. SATA3 speed is a huge improvement. HD drive speed wise there is going to be a substantial improvement across the board. I think the SATA3 upgrade is getting under-hyped. The overlock to the CPU will help this even further. The extra gig of RAM available for gaming should pitch in something here or there, I would assume? Everyone should notice faster HD related performance, and guys who upgraded their HD to hybrids or SSDs, or even high performance standard's, should get pretty huge jumps unless I am misunderstanding something.

                  Also

The GPU on the Pro is overclocked in comparison to the standard PS4. So even if it is just half the GPU being used (like in "regulare PS4 mode") wouldn't it get the same slight bump that Xbox S gets over XBone

I hope you are right but where do you get your facts that having a SATA3 drive will be faster? If the drive is still 5400RPM the bottleneck in the system is the drive speed. Unless you have an SSD that can actually saturate a SATA3 bus then I fail to see how we can assume it will be faster. Trust me....I do video editing and have a high-end PC with SSDs galore and have a hard time ever saturating a SATA3 bus unless I have 2-3 SSDs being accessed simultaneously.

In the PC world SATA3 is not a magic wand that makes things faster but simply an extended bus bandwidth to allow device/devices to have more room to go faster if they can. Simply being a device that supports SATA3 is not any indication that it will actually utilize that extra bandwidth. 5400 RPM drives are way slower than even SATA2 so sticking one on a Sata3 bus doesn't make it faster. It just leaves a lot of room for other devices to use it at the same time without slowing down....which is not currently an issue on PS4 console.

I'd have to re-buy BF1 right off the bat, which would suck. A lot of my other digital titles I guess I could live without.

I'm probably worrying too much, like JB said.

I see. I guess there is no room to assume that stock drives will show speed improvements. For gamers like myself with an SSD in the PS4 (or any upgrades HD) the speed increase seems like a sure bet. I guess I assumed, and that was my mistake, that most people who would spend money on a Pro would also want a premium hard drive as well but that probably is not a safe assumption either.

Yeah, I can't say for sure that the HD drive performance will be better out of the box. Thank you for correcting me.

Hopefully sites like DF or other great resources will provide benchmarks to answer these questions.

When it comes to the Pro, I honestly feel like most people either want to like it or want to not like it, and a small minority of people are genuinely unbiased and/or undecided. I guess we will see what happens soon enough.

And yeah, I fully admit I am in the "want to like it" camp and that makes my opinion pretty unreliable

I am in the "want to like it camp" myself....but the hard drive speed was not one of the factors that lead me there. I am disappointed that most games will see no improvement unless the developers release a patch. Also....if someone can prove that using a higher end SSD will actually increase load speeds I might try one. But in the original PS4 I am pretty sure the very very minor increase in speed was offset by the ridiculous cost of SSDs. I considered it back then but deemed it too expensive for too little return on investment. If that has changed now....yippee!!!

What is there not to like in the PRO....As a 4K tv owner this is a great console and I will be able to enjoy the fruits of having a 4K set

Nobody with a 4K set is going to sit and tell you the Pro is not a good buy.

SSD hybrid is the way to go, not too much more but get a nice performance boost. That's what I got in mine and I timed the difference and it significant in some cases

As for me, I'm mostly concerned that a lot of the NEWER games support the Pro out of the box, not the older games per se.
