Re: New PlayStation 5 Details Revealed, Arrives Next Holiday Season

Well this article on the SSD and storage for PS5 was pretty good. My guess is that the graphics won’t be that much better this gen but the removal of loading times will be a huge improvement. The load times on AC Odyssey were very long. Open world games should see a huge improvement.

One small immersion killer in sports games cut scenes for me is the pause before switching to the next cut. Just watch the first 40 seconds of this FIFA video to see what I mean (everything before kickoff). Every time there is a new cut, the old cut stops, and they fade into the new cut for it to not look as jarring.

Next-gen will hopefully see better framerates, alongside instant cuts without any hitches and pauses like this. Again, it's minor in the grand scheme of things, but it really does make a big difference when you see a game that doesn't have that (like the games that run everything in real time).
      Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60

Yeah, if someone is expecting a 6th to 7th gen type visual jump, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Plus the bar is already set high. Until we get to the point where we have photorealistic in-game gameplay, then we are already so accustomed to high visual fidelity the past 2 generations. But, I do think we will se higher res textures and overall higher level of detail in games. So think of the UE5 demo with the 8k texture gravel. I think of a game like MSG4 on PS3. It was a great looking game, but a lot of surfaces had low res textures and it did stick out. I do think the SSD will play a big part in how open world games are rendered. The data is now able to be streamed in at extreme speeds now. You don't have to fully load environment. You can stream in the data that is only needed to be seen and SSD I/O is fast enough to load in a lot more data as you are turning your character. Which means by only needing to stream in data what is needed to be seen, all the textures can have higher level of detail and resolution and you aren't wasting RAM. I think we will see the 1st Party Exclusives take full advantage. I can only imagine what a game like HZD2, GoW2, or Spiderman 2 is capable of.

The cuts are something that we are accustomed too, but it is an immersion killer. Hopefully with these SSD and stronger CPUs, they can have these cuts happening in real time. But when it comes to sports games, I don't have high expectations this year. Year ones are either next-gen ports with higher Resolution and framerates or separate version but usually stripped down game. Usually Year 2 or 3(when they start dropping resources for previous generation), we start seeing next gen benefits for sports games.

Re: New PlayStation 5 Details Revealed, Arrives Next Holiday Season

While I do really like that PS5 exclusives won't be held back by PS4, I feel that puts more pressure to deliver those major AAA bangers early on in generation. This past generation the first big exclusive didn't really show up until Uncharted 4 in 2016. But, I do think Sony set themselves well for 1st half of generation. HZD, Gow, Spiderman are set for sequels. Then the obvious GT7. Then, possibility of a Uncharted type game(whether LL2 or UC5). So, I see them focusing on those sequels in early first half generation(first 2-3 years). Then by Year 3-4, I expect new IPs and reboots of older franchises. We know the quality of Sony's major exclusives and can only imagine what those publishers are capable of when they truly know how to push console to limit later in generation. But with coming out and saying no major cross-gen(not sure they are mandating all 1st party), that put pressures to show almost full capability of console within first year. Outside of Gran Turismo(which will definitely show up power), their first major title has to deliver in a big way, especially if TLOU2 and GoT are well-received. As it is now, the first major title seems to be HZD2.

Wonder how they are going to approach remaster vs Boost for PS4 BC titles. I imagine the top 100 played PS4 titles will get the boost and not necessarily a remaster. Unless they are trying to do a "Definitive Edition", I feel most of major games don't need a Remaster. Think of major games from 2016 and on, they don't need a remaster. I rather most games just rely on Boost to just raise resolution, framerates, and take advantage of hardware features. I rather see more remakes this generation in general compared to remasters like this past. There are plenty of great PS2-PS3 would be great reimagined and expanded on PS5. Also, while I do think PS4 titles that will get the Boost treatment at launch, I wonder how long do we have to wait for PS5 patch. Where title like TLOU2 will get the PS5 Boost at launch most likely, but how soon will we get patches. I'd rather wait until those Boosted games get any additional content/features before I play it. I'd hate to play a game like that at launch then months later it gets a patch that improves the overall game.

I'm curious, what are you really expecting at launch and in 2021? I do believe that we'll get a top tier major exclusive earlier than how long it took for us to get Uncharted 4 which was approximately 30 months after PS4 launched. I would say this time, it will be cut in half. My guess is 15 months with Horizon 2 in February 2022.

Launch wise, im expecting their best launch lineup ever but it's going to be for everyone. Demon's Souls Remake, Guerrilla's FPS/TPS which could be an online only game, the Online MP for TLOUP2 (which I do believe will be cross-gen but free), Housemarque's new IP and Ratchet & Clank 2.

2021 wise, im expecting Street Fighter 6 as a PS5/PC console exclusive in early 2021 and Gran Turismo 7 in Fall 2021. In between, I believe will be filled by third party multi-platform games. Plus, I do believe 2021 in general will be slow because it will still be a cross-gen year and due to Covid-19, im expecting a lot of games to get delayed into 2022.

The PS5 reveal is hopefully this Thursday since it was revealed in a Twitch Ad which is obviously legitimate since Sony had to pay for it.

I agree with your prediction a few pages back. I expect Ratchet and Clank, Demons Souls Remake, GT7 (I think they push for it to be a launch window game), Godfall, a few other AA titles, and along with cross gen titles. I do think that HZD2 could be a launch window game. Early 2021 would be 4 years since original release. If they could have it out by April 2021 at latest, Demons Souls and HZD2 is a strong 1-2 punch.
I just hope they show off Those BC titles that are PS5 Boost capable and compare to original.

I do believe it. At the end of day, you cant delay it too much or risk leaks and obvious they want to reveal it before TLOU2. Its setting up for a great 8 days for Sony. PS5 event Thursday, TLOU2 review embargo lifted Friday, then TLOU2 release following Friday.
It just seems as if all the events just got pushed back a week to give the ongoing concerns its time.

interesting day with it being June 11th the day before reviews start on TLOU. I guess its better to do it the then instead of waiting in between it and GOT.

Yeah, but with that, Futures event, and EA Play getting pushed a week, it feels like they all communicated to push things back a week.
TLOU2 is big enough to withstand PS5 slate of news and see reviewers gushing over it so far.
Just glad it is on a day that I'm off and around a time, I should have free time.

Except for Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon 2, we pretty much agree in regards to the PS5 launch lineup. I don't think that Horizon will be ready by Spring 2021 plus Sony will delay games and give their first party studios as much time as they need. I'm not expecting them to showcase any BC games until later on. My theory is that they're having trouble because of the SSD as they need to get all those PS4 games that were designed for a mechanical hard drive to run and play on their SSD. Plus, as far as I know, they don't have a dedicated BC team like Microsoft does which probably adds to the workload.

The PS5 event for Thursday is official via PlayStation's twitter page. This Thursday, June 11th at 4pm EST / 1pm PST.

EDIT: Sony has confirmed the live stream will be 1080p at 30FPS. I really don't understand why all these companies do this crap. It's been recorded already. We know it's not "live". Why not just upload the video at 4K/60FPS? No one is skipping any of it anyway. UGH. SMH.

I can see logic in that. I just think Sony would want a strong launch lineup. It's safe to assume that Demons Soul will be one of first games to show a glimpse of whats possible on PS5. But I feel it'll be good to have multiple major titles early that can show off power.

Yeah, I don't get that it since it will be a pre-recorded stream, that they can't have it 4k. Or at least 1440p. But hopefully it is a solution where they release a higher resolution version a day or so later. We should still be able to see the changes to next gen and fidelity possibility even at 1080p, but still takes away from it.

Yeah, Sony could have a strong launch lineup but they never have. The top three in my opinion would be N64 with Mario 64, Xbox with Halo and Switch with BOTW. I do believe that PS5 launch lineup will be the strongest in their history but in all fairness, that wouldn't exactly be hard to accomplish.

                              - Killzone 5, Socom 5 or a new FPS IP
                              - Ratchet & Clank 2
                              - TLOUP2 Online Multi-Player

The above would be a very strong lineup and let's just say that in 2021, they have Street Fighter 6 early in the year and Gran Turismo in the fall to end the year. That's very strong. One title that I wouldn't be shocked to see in the Spring would be Lost Soul Aside which has been in development for years and while it was said to be a PS4 title, could have always been moved to PS5 or cross-gen. I also expect a new Crash Bandicoot game being a one year timed exclusive in the Spring or Summer. So looking at it that way, PlayStation 5 would still have an amazing 13/14 months going into 2022 which is when the heavy hitters start to get released. I'm not expecting launch windows or release dates on the PS5 showcase except for the launch lineup but we'll see.

After the showcase ends, the games I add to my futurelog list, I will re-watch in 4K/60FPS.

One game that can bring back an old timer to a genre that he couldn’t careless about anymore is Socom......socom 2 gameplay for that matter.
