      Re: PlayStation 5

I've spent so much time this console gen playing games that barely take advantage of what the PS5 can do. Indie games, older games, etc. Can't imagine feeling the FOMO to buy a PS5 Pro. Plus, using the "if a game releases on PS4 or vanilla PS5 too, it'll hold the quality of the game down" logic, will it really be much of a leap forward when we see these games? The PS4 Pro made some semblance of sense because of the push for 4K, but would this get us significantly more 4K60fps games? I somehow doubt it.

There's some old games I can't get into because of 30fps, if they were to optimize it for the PS5 Pro, then maybe I would be interested. But, for the games I'm talking about, they would've already.

If the PS4 Pro made sense because of a push for 4K, the PS5, and every subsequent console should make sense until 4k can actually be reached on a regular basis.

I guess if you’re happy with 30fps it’s kind of close enough already, but your average experience targeting 60fps comes with some major tradeoffs at times. A PS5 Pro should close the gap as well as anything could that has to shoot for a roughly $500 price tag.

I would wager there are enough people who are more sensitive to those tradeoffs, that a Pro console will justify it’s own existence. Plus, I don’t think that so called “logic” of the older console holding the new one back will hold up in this case. It really does seem like they’re shooting for more simple and streamlined scalability for developers to take advantage of the extra power.

I personally feel its geared towards GTA6 and all other games similar in stature and structure when they become released next year. Even though we'll be able to play it on the current modeled hardware, its the bells and whistles the hardcore players will want and the pro will be able to offer that.

GTA 6 is the first game I immediately thought of that could take advantage of this new console. But, thats a full 13-15 months away. Yeah, there are some new release that could show off like Silent Hill 2, Assassin Creed, and COD. But, for me i would've been ideal to release a PS5 exclusive with it or something within the past calendar year.

Maybe its a situation where i can sell my PS5 for at least $400 and some other stuff, so where I'm not really going to new money on the Pro. But, I dont really consider myself a hardcore gamer. We're 4-5 years away from next gen. I don't play a heavy amount of games, FPS, or online mutilplayer games. For me, it'll just be for the better Graphic options

It's the open worlds I'm thinking about. Crimson Tide, Kingdom Come 2, Death Stranding 2, The Outer Worlds 2, etc, alongside GTA6

Edit: Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if it were released and then Ubisoft delivering an update file for Star Wars Outlaws.

I do think almost every major release this year will provide an update for the PS5 Pro. I can also see most of the major releases of the past few years to get an udate. If there is an Pro update for Red Dead Redemption 2, then maybe I'll be interested.

But as was said, we haven't seen too many games that takes advantage of the PS5. Maybe we start seeing more games starts to take advantage since we're seeing less cross gen games. But, most of this is at developer discretion. We barely see third party AAA publishers take advantage of the DualSense capabilities. I like the Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers, but we don't see too many publishers takinf advantage.

It's really Sony being Sony. Since I've been a child, Sony was always in the Product hardware business. TVs, Cameras, Gaming Consoles. They've always need to maximize tech hardware improvements for the market demand and meet the competition. With so many new games coming out and if they can play with their pc counterparts, especially the open-worlds, they'll be thrilled. Sony doesn't want to lose gamers who jump to pc when you get just as a powerful setup in their console.

I went into the generation not really wanting a mid gen refresh. I just don't feel like we're at the point where we already met the hardware limits. I agree it's like they are trying to compete with PC. We hear all these PC Specs terms. I just want to hear how this makes future games better, not just Visuals/Performance.

I had the PS4 Pro. My wife got it for me as a gift because my base PS4 was having the eject issue. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer. My gaming time has been limited since I graduated HS a long while ago. I don't see myself getting the PS5 Pro. I'm content with Visuals/Performance and it looks great on my LG C2. I couldn't see myself being a PC gamer, my stepsons are. I would always have FOMO when it comes to new graphic cards and things like that

Give me the Batman Arkham Trilogy, RDR2, Mafia Definitive, and a couple other games at an upscaled 4k60 with RT on the PS5 Pro and I'll change my tune lol

What's changing is the market competition for Sony. Game Pass helps pc dramatically and they want to start jumping ahead of the game fast unlike the debacle of watching Meta Quest take the mantle away from them on another. Now, with Xbox, it's a fast and changing market.

I just thought the PS4 Pro made more sense as a one-off because of the push for 4K TVs, and PS4 only had 1080p out. So in that case it was a simple binary choice and upgrade. A PS5 Pro would be "better" 4K, which to me feels like more of a muddy distinction. Hitting 60fps will clearly be the biggest (and loudest) conversation around this potential console, and specifically whether a game like GTA6 can do it.

What's so interesting is the rumor specs almost sound like for a PS6 yet the gaming community didn't necessarily debunk it. 60fps should be met but 120? Don't think so, especially the part of doubles processing. The teraflop increases are crazy!

According to the pixel-counting wizards over at Digital Foundry (via the team’s weekly post advertising their DF Weekly pod on Eurogamer), the long-rumored PS5 Pro will get a 227% teraflop increase over the OG PS5. That’s a ludicrous bump in power if true, with this incredible number coming via Sony’s developer portal. For context, this fresh speculation says the upgraded console will sport 33.5 Tflops compared to the 10.23 teraflops of both the 2020 launch model and last year’s PS5 Slim.

There is a fairly major caveat according to longtime industry veteran Richard Leadbetter, though. “The same Sony documents suggest only an extra 45 percent of actual throughout,” reports DF’s Leadbitter. “Part of the explanation comes from the RDNA 3 architecture with its dual-issue FP32 support, which doubles the amount of instructions processed, but which does not typically double game performance.”

Wasn't there reports that 60 FPS was not a given for GTA VI. I do think hitting 60FPS will be the loudest distinction. For me, if we can get to the point where we could get a consistent 4k60(it can be dynamic) with RT, then I'll be good or to the point where don't need to have an option besides maybe unlocked FPS mode.

GTA VI won't ever be 60 FPS on consoles with anything above 1080p, that is my guess anyway. This is even true for the PS5 Pro. The game is too monstrous. Only top-end PC's at that time (2025) might be able to achieve that greatness.

The problem is they'd want it to be 60 FPS all the time, because if you're 60 FPS at 99% of the time and drop to 20 FPS 1% of the game, that is frustrating gaming. They want a target that they can maintain, even if they use motion blur trickery or something to make it feel smoother after the fact.
