Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I mean there are only so many things that you can do. My Picture sliders here on my 52" Panasonic at home only include Picture (contrast), Brightness, Color, Tint, and Sharpness. Other options are Color Temp, Color mng., Video NR, MPEG NR, and Black level. Are there hidden options I don't know about?

I just don't see it being justifiable to give anyone two-thirds the cost of what I spent for the TV itself (the 23" Sammy that's being shipped to me at my SDSU dorm). I can't imagine anyone could make the picture $300 better, but really, I don't know enough about what they do exactly.

Again, are there any other options that I'm not accessing? Another part of the remote, maybe?

Yes, there's a service menu that literally has thousands of tweaks to your picture.

With my Sony, Chad made over 500 changes to internal options.

          Huh, that's interesting.

You know, I'm still not willing to pay even over $50 for it (well... I am, but my mom would think I'm insane. It's just all about my parents), but if this is accessible through just the remote, I'd be willing to try this out for myself. Of course, I'll take note of all of the default options and such, but hell, a professional had to start somehow, didn't he? I'll have fun with it.

So is there a way just through the remote, or do you have to do something more? Like, something more professional?

Plus, I don't trust any more Chad's. The last Chad that I invited over accused me of attempted bro rape.

Blzer, like EG said, there are so many options in the Service Menu that can be calibrated with that it would blow your mind. One reason why the service menu is hidden from the public is that you can royally **** up your TV if you do something wrong. I had a CRT HD that I went into the service menu and actually fixed a few things, but I don't recommend toying around in there unless you know what your doing.

You will get your basic settings off of the remote by going into the menu settings, but the service menu needs specific button codes based off of the remote and on some TV's also the buttons on the TV. They make it hard on some TV's to get into the service menu.

You don't have to give anyone $300 if you feel its not worth it, that's your call. Were just trying to tell you that it makes a world of difference if the TV is calibrated by a pro. If I were in a dorm, I wouldn't bother getting it calibrated by a pro until you move into your own place. But that is just my opinion.

Blzer, must you tell your parents every little thing you do?

Sign up over at AVSforums and if you kindly ask in their forums, someone will help you with the button combos on the remote. Or another way, type in the TV name and model into google with "service menu" in the search and you might find it that way. Just be very careful, yeah, these people had to start somewhere but this is something that they do for a living on a day to day basis. Your doing this as a 1 time thing......................................I CAN'T WAIT FOR

Thanks for all of that. Believe me, I understand that the difference is phenomenal. However, if it were that large, wouldn't it be just as plausible for me to have spent that $300 toward a bigger and better T.V. instead of the one I have now (or will have, for that matter)?

It's just a lot of money. I assume most of it goes toward his plane ticket or whatever he needs to get from one place to another, but it's just a lot of money. If it truly makes a world's difference, I'll find somebody or something else for cheaper. Only if I can exactly determine the difference will I be able to judge for myself whether $300, especially for a 23" television, will make my standard HD viewing seem like the leap from SDTV. Because, really, that's the price you're paying.

Not really Blzer, because that bigger and better TV could also be calibrated as an option to look even better. It's a no win situation, but its only an option that people are suggesting. Plus, if you find a base set of settings over at AVS for your TV, you can work from there to configure it to look better than factory. Like I said before, if you have your own place and have a larger sized TV than the 23" it might be worth investigating in the future.

You can do it yourself with help from a dvd.

or i read somewhere that Another interesting way to do a calibration is to use a starwars DVD and use the THX optimizer. This will walk you thru the calibrtion and it makes a big difference

DVE is highly recommended and the Star Wars DVD's help too if you really don't want to spend the money to have a pro do it.

I got the polaroid 32'' from walmart yesterday and i picked up an hdmi cable for my ps3 and when i set up the resolution on the ps3 1080p worked. Also the tv display itself says 1080p. This tv isn't supposed to be 1080p. Does it just say this because its using hdmi, or is this some kind of miracle

Could just accept it for some reason but still displaying in 1080i or 720p. My 4 year old XBR960 actually says 1080p if i set my 360 or PS3 to that output and send it to the TV. I know my CRT does not do 1080p, but still says it.

Wow now you guys are really persuading me, as if I'm only getting half the quality I should be. It seems like it's impossible to push it so much more that it would be worth $300, but I don't know...

I'll definitely wait, though. I don't know if a 23" Sammy will be as different as larger TVs. Perhaps I'll just try the DVD.
