Well, see, I had one... it was a Sharp 19" LCD HDTV. Problem is, it didn't have a built-in tuner and I didn't have a system to really play HD games with. My roommate is supposedly getting a 360 on Friday, so hopefully it will be that "congrats" that I've desired for so long!

Hire a professional to do the calibration. You won't be disappointed. I hired a guy named Chad Billheimer. His site is here: www.hdtvbychadb.com. It will cost $300-$400, but it's worth it.

You can also get a calibration DVD, but there's only so much those can do. A professional will give you the best picture.

With that said, SD channels will never look very good. HDTV's show the imperfection of the signal that much more. Junk in = junk out.

Anybody know of any 5.1 channel speakers (w/ receiver) that I could buy that wouldnt be too expensive (<$100). Sound quality isnt that big of a deal to me, I just want the sound split between 5 speakers instead of just coming from the TV.

What do you mean by calibration? Do you just mean settings? Or do you mean some actual under-the-hood stuff?

If it's just settings, couldn't you like just post your own or something? I'm confused I guess.

BTW, I'm going to get a TV with contrast and backlight options. It will probably start out on 75 and 10, respectively. What do you think they should be at to "save" bulb light, etc? Should brightness, color, R/B tint, and sharpness remain at 50 (or whatever default is)?

Blzer, calibrating the TV yourself will only get you so far. Having a professional do it will be night and day on your set. Any of us can post our TV settings, but the lighting, setups, how far you sit, etc. are all different in the room where we watch the tv. It's going to vary from TV set to TV set. Someone can give you their settings, but at that point you have to use them as base settings. Then, you will also have to go into the Menu Settings (not the basic menu settings) of the TV which is a bit harder to do and calibrate through there too.

                            And it's worth $300 - $400 to do that?

I'll configure my own configurations via configurating mechanisms.

Everything that I have read from the people over here, AVS, and Highdefdigest..............I would say yes. I have seen 2 of the same TV's also at Tweeter right next to each other with one calibrated and another not calibrated, there was a difference. I haven't done it on my set at home yet, I just used someone's base settings and then worked on the picture.

One thing to remember, when you make drastic changes to the PQ settings.....you need to walk away from the TV from anywhere a few hours to a few days, your eyes need to get accustomed to these new settings or you will look at these new settings as poor if you look at the changes right away. This is confusing, but anyone will tell you the same.

Any TV I ever purchase in the future will be professionally calibrated. After Chad did my TV, I highly recommended him to MJB, who then had his done. It was a great investment IMO, as my TV looks incredible once he was finished.
