Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

I'm really confused here. I am getting comcast today and i wanted to get HDTV? I don't know ANYTHING about this stuff. All I know is that I want my picture to look like what I see in Circuit City and Best Buy. I had direct TV but since we moved to an apartment this past weekend, we are not allowed to have satellite (no holes are to be drilled anywhere ).....so i have to settle for comcast. My TV has some connections on the back that says HD connect or something like that. Does this mean that my TV is HD ready? Why is it that if I was going to get HDTV with direct TV I would have to buy a reciever for $300-$400 and I am being told from comcast that their box is free, and I would just be paying an extra $5 a month for HD programming????? Is this right. Am I getting the same thing I would have got with Direct TV HDTV?
I'm pretty confused. $5 a month is alot different than a $400 plus a $10 a month subscribtion for HD programming.

Is there any disadvantages to Comcast HDTV? as opposed to DirectTV HDTV?

    Please help me out here....

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

I have Comcast HDTV, and it has a fantastic picture. I have ESPN HD, INHD 1, INHD 2, Discovery HD, TNT HD, NFL HD, ABC HD, CBS HD, NBC HD, and FOX HD. As well as all the movie channels in HD. I also have the HD DVR which I didn't have to pay anything for unlike the satellite companies.

What type of TV is it? Manufactor and model...

ahhhhh....i couldn't tell you that. im at work right now.....its a 10 year old 50" Mitsubishi (sp?)...thats all I know.

So there is no difference in Comcast HDTV and Directtv HDTV?
Was your reciever free as well? I am just wondering if this customer service guy from comcast knows what he was talkin about...cuz if i have to shell out $300, i will have to wait for comcast HDTV.

I have another question......the picture on the TV isnt that good. The white is alittle too blury and the red is too high. Like when i turn the tv on and its one of those input 1, input 2, etc....or its just a blank screen....the screen is not black...its red. Will HDTV eliminate this problem. I've played around with the color, tint, brightness, etc......but nothing fixes it. My old 34" tv has better (clearer) picture than my 50".....and that drives me crazy. Is it just the age of the TV? I hope when I get HDTV, that the picture is crystal clear like i've seen it in best buy.

With Direct TV, you have to buy the HD reciever and dish which can run from 250-300. With Comcast, the HD reciever is free as long as you have Comcast Digital Cable. The only other difference is Direct TV has HDNET (a strictly HD channel) and Comcast has InHD.

Question: Is your Mitsubishi and HD ready TV or is it just a big screen?

HDNET will be on Comcast this summer, so that solves that problem.

A 10 year old Mits is not HDTV, I can assure you of that. If you want HD, you're going to need a new set, sorry.

I'm as confused as you are... It's gotta be component, I would assume. Was that even around 10 years ago either though?

Try to find out the brand and model number of the tv and post it here. That will help immensely. The fact that you said the tv is about 10 years old is really puzzling me, because it makes me seriously doubt that there is any type of HDTV connection or ability. If component cables were available 10 years ago, even on high end sets, I would be real surprised.

Just to try and clarify a little bit, though, there are 2 types of HDTV sets-those that are "HD ready", and those that have a built in HD tuner. The HD ready sets just means that they are capable of displaying a HD image. They do not contain an onboard HD decoder, meaning you would still need an HD source (cable/satellite HD receiver or a standard HD decoder/OTA receiver) in order to receive the signal.

The only difference between those and the sets with the built in HD tuners is obviously that these have a built in HD decoder. That being said, the built in tuner only works for OTA (over the air), meaning an antenna, either the big *** kind mounted on your roof or one in your attic. For this reason, it doesn't make sense for most people to spend more money on these tv's, because all you can pull in OTA are the local channels. Direc TV will be rolling out local HD channels all over the country starting this fall, so it becomes more of a moot point as time passes.

Ok, the comcast guy came over and looked at it. He was confused as well. The connections on the back says "High Defintion interface" with some kind of connections on the bottom. It is not the regular (RCA??) audio/video connections that comcast uses. Thats what the guy was confused about. There is also "HDTV control, HDTV audio/video" with the RCA connections under each label.

The guy said he has never seen the interface connections before and i would have to ask the guy who will install my HD cable box (if im able to)...(the comcast guy was just there to hook me up with regular cable for now btw...just so i can have something in the meantime).

Its a Mitsubishi...and it says HD1080 on the front.

The model # on the back is "vs-50803".

                        Hope this helps.

apparently that connection is called a "RGB" connection and you will need a converter for it to work. Mitsubishi sells them, it is called "RGB-CV10" . They used to be $300 but may be cheaper now.

Even with the converter, if you can find it, your tv doesn't sound like it'll be true HD. You're better off buying a new HDTV IMO.

I am very depressed now. So you think it would be a waste of money to get the converter? What do you mean be true HD? So it would not look like the pictures i see in Bestbuy or Circuit City?
