Sounds like my wife, I bought here a 30" HDTV for the living room so she can watch them in style, I retreat back to the family room for my 34" XBR.

Never knew that. I might've been the one that told AF that the plasma gas will leak out over time. I thought I read that somewhere?

Is it just newer plasma's that last that long? I thought I had heard that you should get 10 years out of a plasma.

Maybe I'm way off on plasma's..

your older plasma tv's (most of them) have a 30,000 hour life span. So you can expect them to last 15 years if you watch 5 hours per day. The newer plasmas out now have a 60,000 hour life span.

How long does a plasma TV last? While the manufacturer figures are getting higher and higher we offer some tips to get the most out of your plasma for long, long time.

A sales guy at Futureshop said the gas will eventually leak in Plasma's.

I guess the newer Plasma's are better in quality.

BTW has anybody seen a tv with 1080p yet? I'm just curious what the quality is.

when a sales person tells you a Plasma can leak, they most likely want you to buy something else. They don't leak. I have heard lots of stories about sales people saying that. This leads me to believe that TV sales people don't know jack.

Here is some good info on Plasma and LCD tv's.

First question : Which HDTV set is known to have the best HD tuner for converting channels into quality picture, because i dont have the spare change to get a new HD cable box so i have to stick with my old one.

Can i still receive good quality picture, even tho its not techincally HD ?

One set im looking at has 2 component and 1 HDMI...

If i get the xbox HDTV adapter that would work through the HDMI port am i correct ? and then i could stick my cable box and home ent system in the component jacks

depending on the brand will depend on the picture quality. Sony, and Phillips are really good brands. But i've recently discovered an underdog, LG. i picked up a LG 30'' widescreen, hdmi, hd tuner, and the picture w/o the hd box was really good, for under $1000. then i got the comcast dvr/hd (begged the wife for football season), and the xbox hd pack. WOW! the hd receiver makes the picture a hell of alot better. and the xbox hd pack only works on component connection (don't belive there's a hdmi connector for the xbox) , but trust me, the picture quality you'll get for your games will blow you away.

the hdmi is new and the only thing that can use it full potential is a dvd player with hdmi connection. with an hd box, the hdmi will only convert great digital picture, but not the audio (you'll still have sound) because the hd boxes today only have the dvi connection. you'll need to the dvi to hdmi cable or just use the component cables.

soooo, even if your hd has a tuner you'll need a box or hd card (for some sets) to get your hd cable stations. you should have no problem getting your local hd, cbs, fox, ect.... think of them as a key to opening the door to hd. if you have a hd ready or monitor, you'll need an addition hd antenna. if you hook your cable up to the hd w/o the above, chances are, your picture will look the same as it does now. the box is $7 or the card $3 a month provided by your cable company...

^ Thanks a lot for that, i was looking at a LG 42 inch. It's selling for a nice price here in Tdot. I wont be able to grab a HD cable box for a while tho, so ill have to be left with normal cable and hope i the picture isnt horrible or anything.

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

This weekend, there was no sales tax in Massachusetts and I had a coupon given to me by a friend that got me a gift card worth 10% of my purchase. So I went to Circuit City and picked up the Sony 34XBR960. I researched this thing forever while I saved up for it. Luckily, it came down in price recently to $1,900 which got me a gift card for $190 and the HD TV I've wanted for too long!

This is my first High Def television, so what is going to make this thing sing? I've got some generic component cables for the DVD player and some pretty good ones for the PS2. Now here's the catch. I'm going to work for Comcast on the 22nd (starting my new job there), and they hook you up with everything from premium cable to the HD DVR and cables. Should I take that and smile or use the gift card for some monster cables or something else that'll maximize the new TV? Personally, I'd rather buy a nice piece of furniture for my audio/components, but I'm open to suggestions being new to HD.
