Re: Another HDTV questions info thread
no, you don't need a HD receiver for xbox/dvds .If I were to purchase an HDTV monitor, would I have to purchase a HD reciever to play Xbox or DVDs in Hi-Def?My Fan Page http://theusualgamer.net/MyFanPage_Heelfan71.aspx

Same with DVD players? So, basically, all you need a HD reciever is to view TV shows in HD? Can you view local channels in HD without a reciever?Originally posted by Heelfan71no, you don't need a HD receiver for xbox/dvds .

yeah, that is the only reason you would need a HD receiver. You can't view your locals though unless you have the HD receiver. My Fan Page http://theusualgamer.net/MyFanPage_Heelfan71.aspx

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread
Anyone with any advice on this for me? I'd like to start looking come November. Thanks in advance.Originally posted by CWood2Alright guys, since you've guided me perfectly to the XBR960 in my first purchase, I come to you all again as we approach the holidays...where my sister and I will be getting the folks a nice flat panel for the living room. I'm reading up on LCD vs. Plasma so I can get a head start before we pull the trigger. Since burn out is not as big a problem as I thought and color fading and TV life is estimated to be pretty comparable to tubes, I'm now beginning to give plasmas some serious consideration.
Any suggestions on an amazing, can't miss television if I want to spend around $3,000 for a 37-42 incher? Important to note: working for the cable company, I get a great discount on Panasonic and Phillips (the ambilight models included), as well as a discount on a TV & extended warranty at Circuit City until mid November (and that's on all brands). So if there's a TV for $5,000 that's too good to pass on, let me know as I may be able to get it cheaper.
One quick question based on some preliminary browsing. I'm noticing that a lot of the good LCDs have a picture resolution of 1366 x 768 whereas plasmas are at 1024 x 768. Why is that, and which is better? I would think it'd be the opposite since plasmas are so highly regarded for home theater use.

well, I don't think you can go wrong with either one (plasma or lcd). here is a good article to read on a comparison of the two:Originally posted by CWood2Anyone with any advice on this for me? I'd like to start looking come November. Thanks in advance.
Panasonic make really good plasma tv's and very affordable. here is one:
Get full-length product reviews, the latest news, tech coverage, daily deals, and category deep dives from CNET experts worldwide.
Here is the Panny at CC: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Panas...oductDetail.do
And 2 nice LCD's at CC:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sharp...oductDetail.do
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsu...oductDetail.do
I would personally go there and look at them in person to see which one looks better in person. As far as the resolution goes (1366 x 768 whereas plasmas are at 1024 x 768) , the higher the number the better. Those are pretty close though.
Also it depend on if you want a built in HD tuner. The Sammy LCD has one, but the Sharp does not. The Sammy is 40" too, anything bigger than that LCD wise is going to cost a lot more. LCD's are just now starting to be bigger. The Plasma is 42" and you can even get some 50" Plasmas at a decent price. My Fan Page http://theusualgamer.net/MyFanPage_Heelfan71.aspx

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread
Heelfan, you are truly a resource and a half. Start a consulting business or something.
I'll check all of these out in person in the coming month along with a few others and post my impressions before I buy anything. I'm giving myself a lot of time so I can make a good choice...so feedback very much welcome along the way. Many thanks.Comment

Re: Another HDTV questions info thread
I get a big discount on that plasma from Panasonic, so if I go that route, that one will be hard to pass on.
How are the LCDs from Phillips (where do they rank), particularly the Ambilight models? That's the other brand I get a huge discount on...but should I be worried about the life of the TV because of the ambilight technology? My main concern is picture quality, so if the Phillips LCDs lack in that category, I have other options.
Two that I'm looking at from Phillips mainly because of the discount I'd get:
42PF9730A/37 (42" with ambilight)
37PF7320A/37 (37" without it)Comment

Thanks. How many different screen ratios are there? I know the 16:9 widescreen and I know there are others, just not sure what they are.
