Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

The inputs are right (two HDMI and component), as well as the inclusion of a Game mode. I would play with the settings a bit and change them to "Pro" or "Movie" mode, which will net you a more accurate picture. You should be able to more accurately judge shadow detail and black level then, since the 4000:1 contrast ratio is awfully exaggerated. Most calibrated sets will have a contrast ratio less than a quarter that, but will have much better black/white performance. Most manufacturers must judge it on a pure white screen to the TV's being off.

Check the regular review sites of CNET and avsforum to see what they have to say. If nothing else, look at Circuit City online as they have customer reviews.

    Good luck!

ODogg, what kind of warranty did they offer? or do you have to go through Samsung?

i actually didn't ask because i didn't have the money and they didn't offer (no pressure from this company though which I like, from what i've heard alot of these companies really pressure you to buy a ton of extras)....but when i get the tv next week (i'm out of town now) i am going to recontact them and/or see what sort of deal samsung offers in the box. i'll keep you guys posted. just got into charleston, sc today after 6 hours of driving so i was going to check my email and hit the hay!

dunno if this has been asked before but i think i'm gonna bite the bullet and finance a RP HDTV... anyone know how good the Sony KD-E42A10 runs as far as HDTV programming, SDTV programming, and XBOX360 gaming goes?

from everything i've seen, those are pretty good tv's, i'm seriously considering picking up the 50" version of that tv. There is a review on cnet of the 50" I believe. Also, you should be able to find that tv for around $1400 or 1500, especially with the 4th of july sales coming up

got the 56" sammy with 1080p last week at circuit city.

it is the bombest tv i have ever seen in my life.

the 360 looks amazing, there's no point to playing a 360 without an HDTV.

looks like I'll be picking whatever tv I decide on next weekend and hopefully take advantage of some good 4th of July sales. I've got the 12% off coupon to use at Best Buy, which should help.

Best Buy and even Circuit City don't carry the HLS5x88's as of last week or so. The HLS's have picture in picture, cablecard support and tv guide on screen. I've got mine on order from Vanns and actually it came in last week but I was out of town, I ordered the 50" model. So I should be getting it this week either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Check out www.vanns.com as that is where I ordered my set from and so far i've been impressed with them greatly. My TV was ordered on a Thursday and it was ready to be delivered the following Tuesday (altho as I said I was out of town). The company usually answers their phone in an English speaking voice on the first several rings (none of that push this button for this and push that button for that crap) and the sales people did not ask me to buy more stuff. Plus the price charged to my card was exactly what was on the site without any tax, shipping is free or any surcharges for insurance or whatnot (the 50" samsung was advertised for $2699 with a free sony dvd upconverter and that's exactly what was charged to my card).

I'll post impressions on the actual TV when I get it later in the week. But so far I'd highly recommend Vanns because with free shipping and no tax you end up spending several hundred less than any Best Buy or CC.

yeah and believe me you guys will know about it right away too but on my invoice it says HLS-5088 and i'm thinking it's just they just ran out of the tvs since I know the samsung DLPs are the hot ticket right now (circuit city said they won't have the older model 56" HLR5688 in stock for several weeks for example and they don't even sell the HLS5x88 series as of yet, well as of a week ago anyways..)

i'm going to call them tommorrw and ask them what it means just to find out for my own sake as well as for any of you guys here who may want to order that set from them and i'll post what they say.

What am i doing wrong here?

ok, what am i doing wrong her guys....

                          I just got this: http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ...cfkmdffhdfgo.0

Its the LG 23LX1RV.....just alittle something for my room.....im getting good HD picture for my cable....but when i try and hook it up to my xbox 360, the picture is in black and white...also, when i switch to the component the 360 is on (example: component 1 is the cable box, component 2 is the xbox) it always says "out of range", instead of the normal 1080i that I should be seeing....I made sure the blue and the green cords were in the correct slots but still no luck.....like i said, i get HD fine from my cable box...i even tried hooking up the 360 thru the same hookups where i had my cable (there are 2 hdav hookups in the back/side of the tv), but no luck for the 360 (yes, i remembered to switch to HDTV on the xbox cord). any help?

Ok, i called Vanns just now and they said that pre-order should really say back-order as they are simply sold out of the HL-5088SW's and they should get more in around the first week of July. Mine should be here tomorrow by 5pm so hopefully if all goes well I can post impressions by Wednesday.

Alright, new to the HDTV thread so I'm just asking for a little help from those of you who know what you're talking about. I'm looking into purchasing a cheap HDTV just to get the experience, but since I am a poor college student I know I can't afford anything too great. So I was looking at http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=4810693 this model. It's low-end pricing and I have had good experience with Philips TVs in the past. So I was just looking for a little input for what you guys think bang for your buck wise.

I was also wondering, since this has a Built in Tuner, I would just need to hook it up with our digital cable box and order the channels from Charter, right?

Any help you guys could give me would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure about how good that TV is or isn't, but as far as Charter goes, you'll have to call them and set up a time for them to come out and give you a new cable box. You also have to order the HD channels, but they will bring a new cable box out that has component outputs.
