Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I took the HD plunge today. I bought the Sony SXRD KDS-55A2000. $2400 plus taxes and I bought the 4 year extended warranty. I thought I did OK.

I have watcehd the TV for about 1 1/2 hours and it's great. I have been watching the HD channels and boy, they are wonderful. I plan on picking up the DVE DVD soon so I can get the picture right. It's great out of the box, but it's way too bright.

I haven't played the 360 yet, but I am about to.

So far, I have watched (HD) NBC, CBS, FOX, Outdoor Channel, ESPN, TNT, HDNET, and Universal HD.

    WOW.

Jpup - Congrats on the new TV. I have been following this board for some time and plan to make a purchase in the next 6 months. The TV you just picked up is #1 on my list so far. Post any other impressions or settings that you find after playing with it for awhile. I am very interested. How does the 360 look on it compared to other displays? Thanks for your feedback. Did you get a stand as well?

The 360 looks very good. I set it to 1080i and played 1 game of NBA 2k7. I was pleased. I am very glad I chose this TV, it looks so much better at home than it does in the store, it's like night and day.

That's the problem with buying HDTV's and looking at them in stores. It's really a lot different when you get home because the lighting is much different. It's even better when you calibrate it with calibration disc's and even better than that when you get an ISF guy to calibrate it.

I'm in the process of asking ChadB to come calibrate my TV. After EG said he was excellent and it made a huge difference, I was sold. I can't imagine my DLP looking much better, but that seems to be the case when it's calibrated by an ISF tech.

I'm in the market for a new T.V. and I'm really interested in DLP and Plasmas. I went to Circuit City to check out a few TVs and the 65" 1080p Mitsubishi DLP really caught my eye. It blew the socks off every other TV there, I just loved the clarity and crispness. I didn't notice the rainbow effect on any of the DLPs, but then again I wasn't really looking for it. Anyway, my main concern for the new T.V. is picture quality and the ability to play games without a ton of problems.

I looked at the 720p sets and frankly I was disappointed in the picture quality. Better than my current, but still not worth the upgrade. 1080i was kind of "meh.." too so I'm really only thinking of 1080p.

Right, so back to Circuit City, the salesman was talking up the DLPs and told me they are the only way to go with what I'm looking for. He said the only reason I'd want a Plasma is if I'm looking for the sleak look.

My question for you guys would be, is this CC salesman pretty much right? Are there other TVs (preferrably over 45") besides Plasma and DLP that would offer me the same things I'm looking for? Would the 1080p be a problem with gaming? I've read on these boards that 720p is the best for 360 games. Thanks for all your help guys!

If you want 1080P, you don't want a Samsung DLP. They are not truely 1080P according to everything that I have read over at AVS. As far as the picture quality, the Sammy DLPs do look very good.

IMO, as I finally took my pick, the SXRDs are the way to go, but you can't go wrong with the Sammy either. Go back and read the last few pages of this thread. Don't judge the picture by what you see in the store.

I thought the newer versions of the Sammy DLP's were true 1080P jpup? If not, then I may end up selling this one to family, lol... and buying another.

According to what I have read on AVS, the Sammy's are not truely 1080P. I don't know all the technical stuff, but that's what I read. I could be wrong, but if I were you, I would go over there and read up before buying. The way I understand it is that they are only capable of 1080i.

I got a question for you guys, those of you that have bought the discs. Which one would you recommend? The Avia or DVE?

Thanks for clearing that out EG... I knew the first models used some sort of mirroring, but I thought the new ones were true 1080p... I won't have to sell my TV now :y4: lol

Yeah, if you have the all black ones, you're fine.

Got it then. The black and silver ones were not true 1080p, but could display it through mirroring.

                            Ok... I'm good now...

I've touched on this a few times...just search the thread. Also, make sure you are running your SXRD in "Pro" mode. You are adding loads of edge enhancement and are miles from a reasonably close grayscale in any other mode.

Good news on that calibration EG. I wish I had a good calibrator in the area. I might pick up SpyderTV to calibrate my grayscale, but all the service menu tweaks (plus ChadB owning my TV) is what makes the calibration gold! Enjoy!

That's another thing. Chad said the best 2 TV's on the market in his opinion were the SXRD's and Panasonic Plasma's. His words, not mine. He also stated my TV was the best TV under 40" ever made.
