well there was a huge splashdown from something, I would assume that was the helicopter, but with this show, who knows.

I think it crashed because when they heard it it didn't sound like a normal helicopter. Its sounded like it was having engine problems or something to me.

Thanks for responding. I thought so, but after they said she landed in the woods I wasn't sure if the sound I heard was the water or the woods.

Does anyone think that "maybe" since Desmond didn't let Charlie die, that Penny then wasn't the one in tree? Kind of an alternate timeline (maybe she went down with the copter or something...however tragic). I mean Desmond was so certain that it was her, but by changing the sequence of events, maybe it forced a different timeline/future.

I'm sure Desmond and Penny will get back together and that the reunion will lead to the end of the show. However it's curious as to what other ramifications Desmond's saving of Charlie (this or the other three times) will have on the island (by saving Charlie someone else dies, something else happens where he's not supposed to be present, etc).

It was a shocking start though last night! My wife and I were just staring mouth agape!

I can tell you this with 100% certainty. Penny is not dead, because she is too hot to be dead.

This is how I interpreted it as well. If he had let Charlie die then it would have been Penny but since he didn't, well...it wasn't. Also, as for it not being Penny, I think they strung that scene out a little bit too long. I figured it out about 20 seconds before the big surprise. But otherwise it was a great episode!

I thought the same thing after the episode last night. It's an interesting dynamic because it begs the question "What else in the future did Desmond change by saving Charlie?".

I don't want to get all weird and "Back to the Futureish" but how does Charlie living or dying affect whether or not Penny gets in a helicopter?

It plays into the Catch-22 theme. Desmond had to make a decision: let Charlie die and find Penny, or save Charlie and possibly alter the future. Also plays into the story of Abraham and Issac.

Not only that but this isn't like Back to the Future where it's simply about time travel, this has a moral choices and higher power type issues involved. In a real time travel situation I don't see that saving Charlie could affect the other event but this isn't typical time travel.

Also remember about this theory that Desmond's decision about Charlie's life happens well after the helicopter pilot, regardless of who it is/was, parachutes on the island.

An interesting tidbit from the IGN TV review, the "Catch-22" book was in Portuguese, which apparently was the language the two guys in the arctic monitoring station from the Season Two Finale were speaking...hmmmm.

I first noticed her on Sleeper Cell (showtime show)...I find her really, really attractive...and I think you are correct that she is still alive - I'm pretty sure she will become a big part of the story soon (no insider info, just my feeling)

I read that as well. We have our connection! Hopefully we find out the whole tie in soon.

I don't think saving Charlie had anything to do with Penny being the jumper.

Charlie was in Desmond's flashback when they let the girl down from the tree. That would imply that Charlie is actually saved by Desmond.

I think the real catch-22 is questioning how much of what he does or sees is what actually happens.
