The best is when you have idiots like this on ebay thinking he will get $30 for White Noise 2. LOL!

I think they'll be around for a good while, since HD-DVD held equal footing with the BD camp for quite some time while HD-DVD backers sunk a lot of money into the format. There's definitely a market for the combo player and there will be for quite some time, imo.

Also, comparing HD-DVD to DIVX is a little bit extreme. DIVX never even got their foot in the door and they had an absolutely terrible consumer adoption rate. I don't think I knew one person who had a DIVX player....

Plus, expect Toshiba to have a combo player whenever they decide to get back into the business of HDM.

A buddy of mine swore by DIVX, I thought it was junk. It was basically a rental machine.

I do agree, HD-DVD compared to DIVX isn't fair, and hopefully companies do realize that there are plenty of HD-DVD owners out there who will continue to support the format.

I'm sure HD-DVD will be a lot easier to keep alive than say Laserdisc because of the similar format.

True especially if microsoft uses HD-DVD for the next gen console but I guess only time will tell.

                Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

It's going to be very interesting when the high-def DVD format war ends and the attention shifts back to the consoles. All of a sudden the PS3 has all the sports games that the 360 does, it has a few near-system selling exclusive titles (The Show and Uncharted), and it's looking like a better all-in-one multimedia system than the 360 right now.

If I were Sony, I'd spend every last dollar building something to compete with Xbox Live. If they had a competitive online service, even if people had to pay for it like they have to pay for XBL, they would eliminate most people's only reason for choosing the 360 over the PS3 for gaming.

And that's not even discussing the hardware reliability of both consoles....

Their (ps3) live service is the one and only reason I have a 360 still. If Ps3 is anything close to the 360, I would see no need to own both consoles. Bluray winning the war will be HUGE for Sony. I think PS3 sales would really start to get moving if anything becomes official.

It will be huge in the long run but not in the short run. We have to remember that people like us are in the minority. The average consumer doesnt even care about HD media yet. Shoot the majority of people are playing their next gen consoles on standard definition Tvs. I think Bluray winning will help the Ps3 in a few years but not this year.

Exactly- in the short run, this is not going to matter. Remember, HDTV penetration in the US is pretty low still. Nielsen reported in October that it was around 13%. Now take that 13%, and filter out the part of the population that is perfectly content with upscaling DVD players. Also, it would be naive to suggest that all 13% of that group are in the market for videogames.

Completely random estimate, but I think in 2 or so years when the economy (hopefully) is rolling again and HDTV penetration has increased, then we'll start seeing some real momentum a la PS2 sales during this generation. This definitely gives the PS3 lasting power and they'll be able to keep the system without moving on to the "PS4" for a lot longer than Microsoft now. Microsoft will again be forced to go to "next-gen" quicker than PS3.

Using OS as a microcosm to represent the larger public is a mistake. I'd say on a whole, we're a population that is willing to spend more of our disposable income on multimedia goods.

To piggyback some of the above comments, I think I'm in the minority here on OS but I might reflect the majority of consumers because I prefer having my DVD player (whether HD DVD or Blu Ray) as a standalone player.

I have NEVER watched a DVD on my 360 and don't ever plan on doing it.

Many people who buy HD DVDs and Blu Ray DVDs don't even own a 360 or PS3.

I will be buying a separate Blu Ray player regardless of which console I own.

You aren't the only one. I never played a DVD on my Xbox, 360, PS2 or any other console. I preferred standalone players as well.....until the PS3. I even bought a Toshiba A3 HD-DVD player instead of the 360 add-on.

The Blu-Ray players are too expensive right now so I opted for playing Blu-Ray's on my PS3. It's actually a pretty darn good player as well. Even better when considering the price as compared to standalone Blu-Ray players.
