Just because you and some people believe it is a myth doesn't change the fact that there is a boatload of evidence pointing to it being true. Nobody has answered this question though: what harm is there in trying to do what we can to prevent this threat of global warming from affecting us for as long as possible? You can think nothing will ever happen all you want and I would hope that you are right. But if this threat is real and we do not do anything, we will all look like a bunch of stubborn fools.

When the United States receives a threat of national security involving a terrorist group or another state, the government does what it can to prevent that from happening. We should be doing the same with this threat.

Like I said previously, not every threat comes true but we have to still be aware of them to prevent the few that do come true. Just because I think I am safe walking through a bad neighborhood doesn't make it any less likely that I will be shot one day so if I can potentially avoid that neighborhood, I will do everything in my power to protect myself by finding a new route.

Wonderful, why don't we all stay inside with a loaded gun and then we're really safe.

LOL, there is a big difference between staying in with guns and moving away from old technologies that pollute. We can maintain the same life we have now if we just work to be more fuel efficient. It honestly would not take much for us to improve. If we all drove hybrids, it could make a huge difference if this threat is real without changing our way of life much at all.

new scientific study in the journal "Nature" states that "living plants, leaves and grass emit methane into the atmosphere".

the amounts are estimated to be equal to between 10-30% of the total methane in the atmosphere - caused by trees(and other plants i guess).

lol... this sounds like a threat to all humanity. we must stop the trees to save the children

Obviously we can't control what plants do. But if we can do something to protect ourselves from ourselves than we have to do something.

Everyone should watch the Al Gore movie, An Inconveniant Truth. Take it with a grain of salt, but understand that the threat is no longer a threat, it's a promise. The planet has promised us that if we continue to do what we do, we will not exist.

Take what I say as hyperbole, I don't care personally. I am doing everything I can to change how I live that negatively affects our planet. But we are now into January 9th and we here in Toronto have not received any significant snowfall. That is not normal and neither is a string of days with the high temperatures we have been having. I golfed in freakin' January in Canada. Normal?

Re: Global Warming Never Felt So Good

I think some of you are missing the point. Global warming (or stopping the recent trend of global warming) isn't going to stop hurricanes, tornadoes, or any other type of natural phenomenon. Those thing have existed long before us, and will continue to exist long after we're gone.

Also, the amount of methane that plant emits, or the amount of methane that cow farts emit are all known scientific facts. And again, no one debates those facts or numbers, or the fact that both plants and animals have ALWAYS emitted methane in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.

What also is not up for debate is the general warming trend of our earth's surface temperature. I'm not going to take a stance as to whether or not human activity is causing this warming trend, but it's an undeniable fact that the earn has warmed almost a degree Centigrade in the past few decades. That might not seem that much, but in the grand scheme of things, it is.

Take a look at this chart.

                  or this one
                  http://www.research.noaa.gov/climate/observing2.html

That shows the earth's surface temperature for the past 1000 years (although the record for only past 100 years is definitively accurate). Don't look at the projections, as I am also a skeptic as to the doomsday scenario, but up to the year 2000, it's obvious that it is getting warmer. We can see it in our polar ice caps, mountains that used to be snow capped, lakes that have dried up, etc.

If the treehuggers would take the restrictions off of using Nuclear power our dependence on coal and oil would greatly be reduced.

Yeah and when terrorists blow up a nuclear reactor then who's to blame huh huh?

Have you ever been to a Nuclear plant? Nothing short of a nuclear bomb could penetrate the concrete walls those plants have.

There's a flaw to everything....You are right tho that generally speaking nuclear power would be a lot safer and efficient then the fossil fuels we use right now.

What about Colorado and what about the "worst hurricane season ever" we were supposed to have in 06? From what I can remember there was possibly 1 or 2 hurricanes in the US and no major ones, when they predicted something like 3 category 5 hurricanes and at least 10 total ones. I wonder what happened to that.

I just don't like the label global warming for one. And I have nothing against scientists but it's tiring hearing how everyone is going to die in a hundred years or however long it is now, because ourselves and how there's going to be 15 hurricanes and getting a single one, etc.

How about the U.S. takes some money away from that ridiculous military budget and uses some of that money to research alternative fuel sources?
I could divulge into the military budget but I'm sure someone would take that and get the topic locked, so I'll just say this - How about the people that are making ridiculous income (gas companies) take some of there income and research fuels (oh I forgot they are supposedly doing this, but I'm talking more than 20 million) considering they have tens of billions they can spend at will whereas the US is trillions in debt?

To make a statement like this is to turn a blind eye to a real problem. To each his own.

And of course there have always been hurricanes and tornadoes, like another poster mentioned. But you can't deny the factual eveidence...in the last decade, these particular storms have increased in frequency and strength.

I am not going to comment in here further, as this will turn into a political debate, which is a no-no around these parts.

I'm not going to come out and say you're mistaken without any factual evidence on my part (i'm still looking for hurricane data)... but from what I remember, the frequency and strength of hurricanes have been pretty constant since they've been recorded. There are 2 main reasons why people have this misconception of increasing frequency and strength...

                                1. Just more happen to hit land. And this phenomenon is completely random. No one can predict if it'll hit land or not, but no evidence exists to suggest that changing weather or global warming has any effect as to whether or not a hurricane will make landfall or not.
                                2. Again, in the random category... but because coastal cities have become much more populous, if a big hurricane happens to hit land, more devastation and more deaths will result, which means more and more people will know b/c of the news. Again, a hurricane hitting land is random, but there's nothing to suggest that global warming has anything to do with hurricane related deaths.

                                edit:

It seems that there's some evidence to suggest that although the pure number of hurricanes have decreased, the number of category 4 and 5's have increased. So interpret that info any way you want.
