Most of those suck.

They will get better, I'm sure. I wish Apple would do 3rd party titles like MS does XBL arcade games. Why don't they just give the development software to comanies that want to design for it and then have apple certify it.



Well my contract doesn't end until 8/1/07 and I'm goign to get an iPhone. I'll just keep current phone and cancel in August. Then I'm going to try and port my number over. We'll see how that goes.

Where are you going to buy one?

I'm assuming the only places will be cingular/AT&T stores and Apple retail stores......or can you buy them at best buy?

Not best buy. Who knows maybe that will happen later.

I live in a smallish city 125,000. So I don't know what time I should get there. I don't want to have to get their noon. If that's the case, I'm going to log onto apple.com and try to get one.


This can't be like a 360 or wii launch. While they will run out stores aren't going to get like 10 and run out. I would think maybe small stores would get 25 to 50 and huge stores in huge cities 100 plus. They hype for the iphone is huge but does that translate into a horde people lining up on day 1 for it. Or a lot of people getting one in the first few months due to contracts, money etc.

I don't see how there will be such a huge rush due to the price and the contractual issues people have with cell phones. It's hyped, but I doubt you'll not be able to get one if you really want one.

So I got a job for AT&T wireless today and stopped by to make sure everything was in order and the store (which is located in a hick area) got 10 4GB models and 10 8 GB models. Got to play with the display for a few seconds and loved it. Was going to take a few pics(esp. for you dagger...gotta help out a fellow mac fan) with my cell but the boss was right beside me while I was playing with it. The outside of the box is similar to the ipods(all black with pictures of the actual size on it with a silver mac logo on the top). I tried to describe the size of the phone for my friend and he had no idea what i meant so here goes. If you took a can of chunky soup and put it in a box so all 4 sides of the box were touching the can is how big I remembered it. The bags all have upc's on them which you will need for activation. Once the phone is sold it will be placed in the bad which has a ziplock top. I don't know about other stores but our's has a red carpet which ends at the iphone display. I don't believe I will be buying one because I want to see other's impressions etc. so Dagger please let us know what you think!

20 that doesn't sound like a lot. Haha probably 19 more than more gamestops had of the Wii. I kid.

Patience is a virtue that I don't have. I'll probably have to order it online as I'm not going to wait all day at the ATT Store. Maybe I'll drive around the one store we have around noon and see what kind of circus that is. Otherwise I'll probably check around 4 or 5.

Just a little something I ran across..... My Mom was gonna buy both her and myself one today.... but I think we might wait....... The killer for me is the internal battery.

All of these have been confirmed and verified as factual at this time. One hopes that as word of some of these things gets out, AT&T and Apple will loosen some of the more onerous restrictions. This is not supposed to be an Apple-bashing/Apple-worshiping flamewar thread. The Battlefront is that way if those are the droids you're looking for. This thread is merely to provide useful information to prospective iPhone buyers and nothing more.

(1) All iPhones must have a voice plan AND a data plan, or you won't be allowed to activate it on AT&T's network. Period.
(2) iPhone is not only SIM-locked to AT&T, it is locked to the specific SIM it comes with. No other SIMs will work.
(3) There is no way to transfer your existing contacts from your current SIM within the iPhone. Putting your existing SIM in the iPhone will cause the iPhone to lock and not even start up. You need to buy a USB data cable to first transfer your existing contacts from your old SIM into iTunes, and then to the iPhone. If you already own a USB cable for your current phone, then you're good to go. Otherwise if your current phone doesn't use a bog-standard mini-USB connector for PC connections (most recent ones do), have fun hunting on eBay for the appropriate USB data cable for your phone.
(4) iPhone cannot be activated in the AT&T store. You must go home and activate through iTunes with a valid credit card.
(5) If you buy an iPhone to try it, remember there is a 10&#37; restocking fee if you open the box even if you are within the return period. This falls in line with Apple's standard return policy, but not with AT&T's. It's an Apple product being sold at the AT&T store.
(6) The return period is 14 days instead of the usual 30. Again in line with the Apple return policy, not the AT&T one.
(7) Currently the iPhone does not support Adobe Flash, and it is unknown if it ever will as Apple is currently embargoing all 3rd party application development.
(8) Just to reiterate point (7), currently no 3rd party application development is allowed for iPhone. There is no SDK, and it cannot run ordinary Mac OS X applications. Furthermore even if you made an app there is no way to install your app on the iPhone as iTunes won't allow it.
(9) Just to reiterate point (8), there is also no Java support so you can't make applications that way. Apple has said there might be Flash support down the road, but there will never be Java support. Teh Great and Mighty Steve doesn't like Java.
(10) The battery is internal, just as with iPods. After 300-400 charges, you need to send your iPhone to Apple and they will replace the battery for a fee. Heavy cell phone users will probably need to send their iPhone in for a new battery in a year or less. I suspect that most Generation 1 iPhone buyers will upgrade to Generation 2 iPhone the moment it comes out anyways, so this point may be largely moot.
(11) iPhone only supports AT&T's 2.5G/EDGE network at this time, though Teh Great and Mighty Steve has already commented that there will be a 3G/UMTS/HSPA version of the iPhone when AT&T rolls out 3G in enough areas to justify support. I've been a Cingular/AT&T customer for a long time now, and knowing the glacial pace that AT&T rolls out network upgrades, that means the wait for a 3G iPhone could be long indeed.
(12) There is no iChat at this time, and since 3rd party apps are not allowed, no other IM clients can ever be released for iPhone.
(13) Currently the iPhone cannot use ordinary music tracks from iTunes as ringtones. It's not known at this time if you can create your own ringtones in iTunes and then send them to your iPhone tagged as ringtones, or if this won't be allowed because AT&T wants to rape you for additional fees to buy their premade ringtones.
(14) The iPhone is exclusive to AT&T for at least 2 years. So, learn to like the restrictions that Apple and AT&T have placed on the iPhone, or don't buy it, because you're not going to see a Verizon or T-Mobile iPhone anytime soon. Remember, Apple never uses lube.

I hope this PSA has been helpful to prospective iPhone buyers. I would suggest that anyone interested in iPhone wait for the 2nd generation product rather than put down $500-600 for a device which seeks to restrict everything you can do with it while simultaneously finding creative new ways to siphon money from your wallet by doing things like forcing you to buy a data cable for your old phone just to transfer your old SIM card's contacts.

Great post but this is simply not true. If a web based application is developed through safari supporting IM clients you will be able to IM.

An app would be a better solution, however, and like you mentioned will not be available unless 3rd party apps are allowed or Apple includes it in a firmware update (the most likely solution).
