Washington, D.C. (August 29, 2007) -- DIRECTV told TVPredictions.com tonight that it will likely add from 20 to 40 new High-Definition channels by Sunday, September 16.

That date coincides with the 59th Annual Emmy Awards and DIRECTV has scheduled a post-awards party that night in Los Angeles to promote its new high-def lineup.

Asked tonight if the HDTV expansion will have taken place by the Emmy party, Eric Shanks, DIRECTV's executive vice president of entertainment, said "it will be real close" to that date.

DIRECTV launched a new satellite in July to expand its High-Definition capacity to 100 channels by year's end. (The satcaster plans to launch another satellite to increase the capacity to 150 HD channels next year.)

In an interview with TVPredictions.com, Shanks said DIRECTV will have added 70 new high-def channels by the end of the third quarter, which ends at the end of September. He said it will have the 100 HDTV channels by year's end.

Shanks added that DIRECTV will add a minimum of 20 new HD channels on the first day of the expansion.

"It will be more in the 40 range if all goes well," he said. "It's still fluid so we can't say for sure."
I will believe it when I see it, I was thinking about switching over to Direct TV my self, but took a pass as of now, I got optimum right now ans we get over 40 hd channels right now and the list keeps growing, I was upset at firt with Optimum/cablevision, latley there always adding somthing. Plus I look at the Direct tv Packages and was like blah, plus you have to pay extra for HD with DTV, when I pay nothing for my HD channels...

Also I have my phone/computer and cable with cable vision and pay like $140 a month, so If I got Direct TV, then I would be paying more, a lot more witgh someone else...

See what? There are now over 70 channels, if you include RSN's. And if you get the channel that has an equivalent hd channel you get it. D* will begin charging for some of the hd channels, such as hdnet and discovery hd theater, but i believe you get all other channels depending on your package.

150? oh wait, maybe i read it wrong, but i was under the impression that it was UP TO 100 channels by year's end?

EDIT: its 150 by NEXT year's end.

been a longtime d* customer and have never had a problem with them. Experience will vary though, but i love it. Using the CE program lets me working with the latest software to see all the changes and cool little things added to the receivers; not sure if other providers have a program like that.

Sweet, Comcast has added TBSHD and CNNHD in the last two months. Way to catch up.

Are you D* people actually seeing Speed Network in HD? I ask because the last I checked, a couple weeks ago, Speed wasn't even going to be broadcasting in HD until 2008.

Edit: Nevermind. Just went out to DBSTalk and learned this is basically just an upcoverted channel until Speed officially goes HD in February.

D* is not responsible for the content that a channel shows, so all they can do is provide the feed. Alot of channels start of slow, but then start providing the content in hd. Others have a mix, and looks pretty damn good. premium channels look fantastic in hd compared to their sd counterpart.

TBS seems to stretch alot of their non-hd content, but they are getting better. Watching some of the final brave games in hd looked real good.

                        B151, what's this you're saying about OnDemand?

And FXHD sounds great for the Nip/Tuck crowd....but I don't really care to watch that show so maybe they'll show old Married w/ Children reruns in high-def.

VOD is coming to d*. if you are interested in getting on the CE ( cutting edge) program, then you need to visit the dbstalk.com forums.

The last few software updates has allowed you to begin getting VOD feeds thru your network. So you plug in the cat5 cable to the back of your reciever ( if it supports it) and you can check out all the VOD content.

Again though, you need to update the software your receiver is running. Usually the window of opportunity to do this is friday and saturday nights for a couple of hours when the announcements are made. Eventually those updates you get will go national, so you are basically a guinea pig; havent had a problem with a receiver ending up not functioning, and you can always rollback.

make sure the channel says hd on it. And just because its hd, doesnt mean all programming is...yet.
