Re: **Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread Part II**

I finally saw the new Star Trek movie.
Missed it during the theatrical run, so I decided to just wait out the Blu-Ray.
Bought the Blu-Ray based entirely on reviews.
    Two thumbs up.
J.J. Abrams did the franchise proud, the casting was solid (though I thought Chekov's accent was awful) and Zoe Saldana looked spectacular as Uhara.
Chris Pine was a pretty solid Kirk, Zachary Quinto could easily be Leonard Nimoy's son (or grandson).
Eric Bana was an effective villain.
Nice package of extras on the Blu-Ray.

Fry's made a pricing booboo on their website today listing Fight Club as $9.17. Needless to say, I had my friend in Phoenix take full advantage of it and I will be the proud new owner of Fight Club on bd for under $10 on Thanksgiving.

That's funny that you think Yelchin's accent is awful since he's actually Russian.

My thoughts pretty much exactly the same as Hidef Digest review. Great casting and performances, time travel plot was a brilliant way to create a whole new Trek universe (which was sorely needed). I thought Nero lacked depth but almost any villian in a new franchise's 1st movie is more of a cardboard villain along with his diabolical intentions as the movie has to concentrate more on character developement and introducing the backstory.

Also thought the action was too relentless at times (although very well done) with out enough time to give the viewer a breather and the movie was trying for too much comedy (the comedy was good but needed to be scaled back at times as it hurt the dramatic tone)

Those are really nitpicks for me as those things are common for reboot movies because as a die hard fan of the original series I think they did do the impossible and set off a new Trek universe almost flawlessly and above all it was entertaining and was the perfect launching pad for a more "serious" 2nd movie where the plot and villain can be more fleshed out.

Also the video was great and audio was reference quality (dynamic range and frequency was 5*) with some of the cleanest, deepest bass I have heard which is difficult to do. Many movies have deep bass but it's usually overcooked and messy.,

So I know this would be me trying to be cheap, but do you think I could Photoshop that $9.17 price back in for Fight Club and go for it? At least that way I'd have the excuse saying, "Well, I printed it on such-and-such date" or whatever if they don't allow it or something. That way I won't get kicked out of the store or something, I guess...

Star Trek was almost awesome until there was no option for DTS sound. For all movies that are out, how can this movie not have it. One of the biggest movies of the summer and if any movie needed DTS this is it. Warp speed, laser guns, explosions were all halfassed. I saw this at a cina capri and that has DTS sound in the theater and that was an amazing experience.

                      Very disappointing!!

Anything wrong with it being in Dolby TrueHD?

Gotta have the audio equipment to take advantage of it.

DTS and Dolby True HD sound exactly the same to me. Can you tell a difference between the two?

Ah, I see. So it's possible to get DTS-HD Master Audio but not Dolby TrueHD?

Similarly, although Fox Home Entertainment prefers to use DTS-HD Master Audio on its Blu-ray releases, at the present time there isn't much hardware that can decode the full lossless extension to the codec. Most currently-available Blu-ray disc players and A/V receivers instead extract the lossy DTS "core," so the majority of listeners aren't hearing the format to its fullest potential. That's not a knock against Master Audio, but rather a limitation imposed by the playback hardware.
