I don't have surround sound yet - not really feasible for my current space anyway.

Then of course there's the problem of what to do with my HD-DVD player and HD-DVDs.

You can download the firmware updates off of the net and burn them as ISO file. Then you just perform your update off of the burned DVD.

I had a Panasonic BD30 for 9 months and never had 1 problem with it or any discs. The Panasonic's are very reliable. Same goes with the Sony that Extreme has. The difference with the BD55 or S550 over the BD35 or S350 is if you are going to use the 5.1 audio jacks in the back of the BD player to connect to your receiver if your receiver is not HDMI compatible so you can get high resolution audio.
Also, the Sony comes with a 1GB memory stick you could take out and copy the file over to, it's a USB memory stick.

That is nice the 550 comes with the USB memory stick. The Panny's take SD cards, but I was able to get a 2GB for $15. Not too bad. I always stand by having a SAL player, considering that they now can almost match the PS3.

1 title that didn't work right on my PS3 was Planet Terror. It comes out next week and I was working on my review for the film, so I pop it in to the PS3 so I can get the run times on the special features. The movie hung for a good 2 minutes waiting to load on the PS3 vs. no issues on the Panny.

I don't see how people can't even see the edge-enhancemet/halos in these images. It is already disturbing to me.

I honestly think it's one of those things that's like... once you notice it, you can't go back. It's like that spinning girl thing we saw a long time ago... you either see her going clockwise or counter-clockwise. If you can do something to your mind to get her spinning the other way, it's almost damn near impossible to get her spinning back the original way.

I don't want to have to do this, but click on this link at your own risk. If after you read this you're scarred for life like me and always see halos when they're present, then I'm terribly sorry. However, this is an example of what I see and why it bothers me so much (and yes, it's very bothersome):

Again, I'm not complaining to complain, and I'm not taking other people's ideas and making them as my own. This is a legitimate complaint and edge-enhancement is destroying the image much more than it is helping it.

bigfnjoe...why, oh WHY did you have to feed the troll?

The sad thing is, it's not even a greedy I live under the bridge and am pissed off troll...it's an "I'm not complaining while I'm really complaining" denial troll.

And Jesus Christ Blzer, the spinning girl thing was an easily manipulative optical illusion, to make her go both directions, you only had to have half a brain. I was able to toss that sexy back broad clockwise, counterclockwise, upside down, inside out, and everything.

EDIT: And Blzer, your link is a total POS...the least they could do is compare apples to apples, rather your link compares apples to watermelons and expects me to be pissed off. Sorry, why not show the original theatrical reel of 'Braveheart' and compare it to the DVD...nope, they compare 'Braveheart' to the ******* opening title screen from 'The Fifth Element' (was that the first, second, or third dip of that particular title!?).

Same thing with 'Titanic'...was it the first release, or the James Cameron SE, with the film spread over two discs and a good 30+ deleted scenes?

Re: **Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread Part II**

Johnny, my intent here is not to troll. I would not be posting if that were my intent... I have no hopes of getting in trouble for my posts on here. What seems to happen a lot when I post, however, is that people do not understand the points of my posts. I think you missed my point as well.

The point of the link was not to compare one thing to the other, I just don't think many people here got a grasp of what it is I'm seeing in the pictures. It doesn't matter if they're comparing halos in one movie to no halos in another, the point was showing what the halos are and how they're prevalent. For me, after really noticing them for the first time (I can't remember when it was... just may be a natural thing for me), they haven't gone away. The Dark Knight has them, and it's unfortunate.

Keep in mind that there was one thing I was hoping for this year, and it was to have the best possible Blu-ray ever with The Dark Knight. It is so close, but some EE and DNR is taking that away. It's just that close. I don't want to troll, I love this movie so much that I have seen it seven times since renting it.

And like I said, I was thinking that the link would be a great example for you to recognize them, and once you see them you can't go back. That was my example with the spinning girl thing. I know what it has to do with (left/right brain functioning), but the fact of the matter is it's hard to switch. I guess that wasn't the best example, but it was the first thing I could come up with.

And bigfnjoe doesn't need to "feed me" either. If you guys don't see it, you're lucky. But to say it's not there is simply incorrect. I have the same issue with high-frequency noises. In the beginning of Saw IV on Blu-ray there is a HFE that almost wants to make me plug my ears until it's gone, but none of my friends notice it. Again, they're lucky that they can't hear it, but that doesn't mean that it's there.

The last thing I want to do is hark on this movie. As my favorite movie of all time, the first thing I want to do is defend it... but if you don't see the edge-enhancement halos, I'm trying to give examples of what I'm seeing and how it isn't a minor annoyance, but rather a large one.

My intent was not to keep the DNR/EE Discussion going or to add to it. I usually post screens from all movies I purchase. I do as a contribution to the OS community. Personally I habe no problem with the way Warner treated TDK including the switching of Aspect Ratios during the IMAX & NON-IMAX scenes.

Here are some shots from WANTED, which BTW looks & sounds GREAT

Wanted is one of the better looking (and sounding) Blu-rays out there IMO. My resident is a PS3 owner and hadn't gotten into Blu-ray until I showed him that he wasn't taking any advantage of his 26" Toshiba without HDMI cables (he was still using composite). I led him to the cables at monoprice.com and told him to stay away from Monster. Once he saw the difference, he started doing Blu-ray shopping. He was the one that I showed the site of where to get The Dark Knight early, and since I have the "more calibrated" TV plus the surround system, we both first watched it in my room. He also picked up Wanted and we did the same thing... that's how I was able to see it again for those who were curious as to how I saw it without buying it, because personally I don't like the movie that much.

And bigfnjoe, I wasn't saying what your intent was. I've seen you post pictures before and I'm thankful that you do. I was just hoping that other people would see what I saw with the pictures. I want people to know that I'm not complaining just to complaining, but something in those shots really exists and it's something that could not only be addressed, but really make the picture look better and reference. I have zero problems with the switching to IMAX and 35 mm, but that wasn't Warner's decision. Nolan made up his mind even before the theatrical release of TDK (as seen in a couple of interviews), and I'm glad that he did so, because those shots are simply amazing. I just wish Nolan streamed sequences together entirely in IMAX so we're not only getting some of them, like the Lamborghini scene or the Hong Kong scene. Either way, it was the right choice. Not only that, but it really shows the difference in quality, which if you're a consistence fantatic (unlike me, I just want to see the best possible), this is not a good thing for you.

Again, thank you for posting images. What kind of camera do you have? I tried to use whatever kind of cheap digital camera I have (you have to put in new batteries, it's not rechargable), and I couldn't find a setting that wouldn't meet all requirements: 1) have no flash; 2) have no blur; 3) have no pixelation; 4) have no TV glow. With all of that said, I can't get the images that I would like to upload. I'm doing it for those out there saying that I am looking at an uncalibrated set at a Best Buy kiosk, whether they're joking or not.

Thanks again for the shots, bigfnjoe. If it counts as apples to apples, those shots look much better than the 35 mm shots on TDK.

Thanks blzer. My response wasn't directed towards anyone in particular just a general statement. As for Wanted it's reference all the way. Universal right now IMO is the top-dog in BD authoring. All there releases are Top Notch.

As much as I hate double-dippin Universal is making-it hard not to. What might push over is the Bourne releases.

My camera is a Canon Power-Shot sx100. I usually use manual mode instead of the automatic mode offered by the camera.

If your looking for a camera make sure it offers Image Stabilization. Preferably Optical Image Stailzation

Yeah, the one I have has Image Stabillzation (no OIS), but the image comes out rather pixelated, and doesn't do the PQ any justice. I guess for now I'll have to make do with that.

I think your own link answers that question...

"But EE starts to get bothersome when either the amount of EE used is not appropriate but exzessive or you get a bigger screen or move closer to your screen."

...so how close is it you're sitting to the screen? Even after reading that and moving up closer I still can't see them on a 40" screen, unless they're only in specific scenes but it sounds like something that would always be there.

I'll have to take a picture of my room and show you.
