Dang. Oh well I guess I am helping their cause by stretching it out to full screen.

The Shield and The Wire were both shot on 16 millimeter film or Super 16. Although the resolution is less than 35 millimeter (the movie industry standard) many film experts consider it far greater than standard definition, thus benefiting from a BluRay transfer. I don't think either show is out on BluRay.
EDIT:I really don't know how much of a stretch that is. 16:9 wide screen has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 while Super 16 millimeter has an aspect ratio of 1:67:1. Maybe one of the more technically savvy posters can help.

Was this the complete series collection pack? If so, worst packaging for a dvd set ever. It's a disgrace how the collector edition is crap. I find it disrespectful to the greatest show of all time.

I was so hoping it was like The Sopranos complete series or even Six Feet Under at least. I love how the dvd sets were for season's 1-3.

Finally finished watching this show. I'm gonna say it: best show of all time. It really is brilliant in every way. I've never liked a TV scene more than the one where Stringer tells Avon he had D killed. Oh and Wee-bey f'n rules.

Just added Season 1 to my Netflix queue. I've never seen a single episode but have heard good things from many people.

David Simon didn't want to make the DVD set too nice. He wanted it to represent what you would find in the back of a barbershop in Baltimore.

I don't want to over sell the show so I'll try my best to be cautious. With that being said, "The Wire" is a show that will make you re-evaluate everthing- not just other tv shows, but everything.

In season 2 now. In regards to the convo on page 1 about the wire making you want to go to Baltimore.... The show had the opposite effect on me, I now NEVER want to go there lol

It takes a little while to get into it. You'll be watching the first couple episodes and like bits and pieces, then all of a sudden you'll be midway through the season and realize that not one scene in the show was superfluous and all of sudden it'll hit you that this might be the greatest tv show ever made. From there, just enjoy the journey.

And I'll warn you that not one person I've talked to thought season 2 was as strong as the other 4 - that's not to say it's bad, but it is very slow at the beginning - so stick with it. Once you get past season 2....3, 4, and 5 may be the strongest of the series, in my opinion.

                        It only gets better.

Season 2 the first time is pretty bad by The Wire standards. I was pretty bored the first five or six episodes, but the end of episode 6 kicks up like episode 3 of season one does.

Season 2 the second, third, fourth, etc time is the second best season after season four.

It's such a change of pace from season one that you're thrown off when you first watch it because it's the first season to partially depart from the drug dealing, but the characters (and boobies) beat anything but season four.

I'll have to go back and watch it again sometime. I've only seen it once and, as you said, it was rather boring for the first half.

Season four is definitely my favorite as well, but I can never decide the rest. It's always been 4-3/5/1-2 for me, but maybe re-watching the show again would help.

Watching The Wire once is like watching TV without sound.

You catch so much in seasons 1 and 2 the second time it's almost embarrassing what you miss (most notably Bunny laying out plans for Hamsterdam in season 2).

For most of us in Maryland the order is:

                              Four

                              1-3

I've seen every season but 2 twice, with 3/4 each getting 3 views and about half of season 5 getting 3.

Why don't you Baltimore people like 5? For me, the entire Omar/Marlo storyline was awesome - but I don't know if there's some unrealistic part of season 5 that I'm missing. I like Marlo and Marlo's crew (Chris, Snoop, Cheese, Michael) more than I liked Avon's, which is a big thing to say, I know. Something about them was more entertaining to me.
