    Avon hired him too right?

Because IIRC, Stringer wasn't really cool with him initially.

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire

I just rewatched season 1, something I'm wondering...

At the end of the season Daniels, Mcnulty, San Angelo all get buried. But Lester, who was behind a lot of the stuff that the bosses had issues with gets out of the pawn shop unit and into homicide. Why is that? Only thing I can think is that they just needed to replace Mcnulty and saw him as the lesser of two evils.

Homicide: Life on the Street has to be somewhat linked to the beginnings of The Wire, being that it is based on a book written by David Simon and centers around the Baltimore Police Department. The series was a huge break for Andre Braugher, who I can't imagine in a dramatic role because of his great comedic performance on Brooklyn 99. It also introduced Richard Belzer's John Munch character who has appeared in multiple series and his 21 years in TV noses out Kelsey Grammar's Frasier and James Arness' Matt Dillion.

My brother was talking this up yesterday and mentioned Belzer's record. Has anyone else seen this series?

I think it had more to do with Daniels and McNulty being a bigger problem than Lester. Daniels was told to keep the case on the streets, but let it grew to where they had wiretaps and seeing it point to political contributions. McNulty from the get go was the judges source and he really didnt care who he pissed off when he needed to get anything. Daniels always seemed like a company guy, so he took responsibility for what his people did while he has the lead. McNulty just pissed off the wrong people, mainly Rawls.

On season 4 of the rewatch, where Carcetti wins the election and the Omar/Marlo beef starts and already seeing things I didnt recognize the 1st time. Plus Amazon prime has trivia for each show and it just adds to it.

Homicide is/was a classic. One of the most stark (and starkly out-of-character for a network series) TV dramas from the 90's, totally different from anything I'd seen before that. Until "The Wire", it was the gold standard for cop shows IMO.

I have no idea how it stands up over time, having not seen it since it was originally on, but at the time it was a revelation for me. It was a completely different kind of show than I was used to seeing on network, and definitely the roots of "The Wire" are visible. Still constrained by the 1-hour w/ commercials network TV model, but nonetheless it was well worth the watch.

As a side-note, it's funny that you can't picture Andre Braugher in a serious role, because "Homicide" was the first time I ever saw him, and since then I can't picture him in a comedic role. Frank Pembleton was McNulty before McNulty was McNulty. That's why his character on "Brooklyn 99" is so funny to me; because it seems so out-of-character for him.

The people that buried Lester were long gone, and in season one he didn't do anything to put any stink on him. He worked the case, flipped an informant and stayed out of trouble, because he could see what McNaulty and Daniels were getting into. In later seasons he showed he just couldn't help himself.

Slim was new muscle in season three after the fall of towers in season three, he was a guy who didn't agree with "product over territory" which is why him and String bumped initially. While string was handling "business" Slim ran the streets until Avon came home then he became chief muscle (taking Wee-Bay's position).

After Avon got locked up he took his skills and reputation to the Prop Joe.

As for his "origins" you could just assume he was a west side solider who took advantage of an opportunity with so much Barksdale muscle locked up.

Ok im late I know, The Wire

Just shows how much of a BOSS Lester was from the jump. The first season he just went about his business making some of the biggest breaks and leading Prez and Sydnor through the paper trail.

I can't wait to rewatch through S2 and on. I don't remember much of the original crew in S2, just the longshoremen stuff. I'm sure I'll be "ah ha!"-ing at a lot of stuff this season.

Well he was behind digging into the politicians and campaign donations. Though your right, he managed to do it quietly and avoid blame for that when the bosses found out

One of the big "a-ha"'s for me was that re-watching season 1 (I don't remember the episode), there's a throwaway conversation between McNulty and Bunk at their desks where McNulty is saying he'd really hate to be assigned to the patrol boats in the harbor, because the diesel fumes give him headaches. There's no reason for anyone to remember that comment if you're watching the series for the first time, but I always thought it was interesting that they already had season 2 planned out halfway through season 1.

Also, there's a conversation (I think between Freeman and McNulty) where Freeman advises McNulty not to tell them where he'd like to be assigned when they come asking after the sh*t all hits the fan, because they'll give you the exact opposite (hence Lester ending up in pawn shop). Makes you wonder who spilled the beans about McNulty not wanting to be on the boat....

It was Landsman. I just got done the first two episodes of S2, and McNulty owed him $10 for, I assume, knowing that he'd end up on the boat.

Landsman is such a sloppy, nasty suck-up to Rawls it makes me sick. I guess he's (Landsman) their sergeant and they gotta be cool with him, but I'd never be out drinking with his suspenders-wearing, jock-riding ***.

S3E1 - McNulty is in the cheap seats watching his ex wife and his kids hang out with her new bf in seats right behind home plate.

                            That's gotta be humbling.
