The visual style in the trailer makes me happy. It's very artful in a comic-book way.

Although the visual style will remain, Nolan always tinkers with the color timing of his films after these trailers are released. Chances are we'll get something with a little less yellow and cyan, and a little more magenta (a little darker too).

Batman Begins and TDK had two very distinctive, contrasting styles. I don't think we've seen enough to see what direction he'll go, but the way he's framing the shots, and the visual effect of that Bane close-up and Batman and Bane fighting has me excited to see it. TDK really drove some emotions into you with some awesome visuals.

I know what you mean. I don't know which shots were filmed with IMAX cameras (though I can take an educated guess on a few of them), but it seems like his scope is much different this time compared to the last two times. I'm not saying that he and Pfister are resorting to less handheld camera action, but they are certainly taking in a larger amount of information per frame, and probably giving each shot more consistent "flow."

There was something Steven Soderbergh once talked about in the Ocean's Thirteen commentary track known as objective filming versus subjective filming. I wish I could just transpose exactly what he said onto here, but Nolan's filming style has normally gone the way of the "subjective" style, with some exceptions here or there. This time, it looks to be a bit more "objective," and in spite of the content, it is probably a good idea. But again, a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that they want to remain as consistent as possible between their IMAX shots and their 35mm shots (and whatever other cameras he uses).

But even still, I expect the green/blue hues to tone down significantly from the trailer to the end result. That's just his M.O., even if it wasn't as significant in BB.


EDIT: I know these are two completely different films (and in fact, these are two completely different takes as is), but here is an example of what Nolan did from a trailer to the final release of Inception, which is pretty similar to what was done in The Dark Knight:

I'll look on AVS, because I think some people do comparisons from the trailer to the Blu-ray of TDK, because of the edge-enhancement complaints (complaints which I have had as well ).


SECOND EDIT: Found a perfect one on AVS, especially since we're going from the TDK Prologue that was released in theaters to the one that was seen on Blu-ray.

This particular post actually shows what they do when converting something to IMAX in theaters. Unfortunately, they also left this on the Blu-ray (referring to the sharpening and contrast increase, not the color timing, which however also shows the difference between the trailer and the final product, which leads me to believe they'll be making changes close to this for TDKR as well).

Again, I know they are different films, but for consistency's sake, I'm expecting more of the same from Nolan and co. when it comes to TDKR, even though we seem to be venturing more areas of Gotham (as well as places outside of it) than we did in either BB or TDK.

Judging by the look on Bruce's face when he sees her in the trailer, he does too.

Also, I found the last shot of the trailer interesting. Two tumblers and the Batwing (or whatever they plan on calling it).....

The thing I just love about Nolan's movies are the amount of depth that they have. We saw terrific shots of what will probably be terrific scenes, but have we even truly yet seen anything? In a two minute trailer, we probably only even saw about five seconds of Batman. Even with that, there will still be a lot to see with Marion Cotillard and JGL, there is Catwoman, we haven't even seen a glimpse of Lucius Fox yet, then obviously Alfred and Gordon... I mean, I'd be saddened if a film of this substance is under 160 minutes. There is just so much here.

I seriously can't wait seven more months until this film comes out. How did Cartman do that freezing trick again?

As I was watching the trailer, I was struck by the contrast in compositions between this and The Prestige. It even reminded me of parts of Memento, especially in the sections where you could tell that something had taken place in a different period of time than the scene preceding it. To confirm my suspicions I decided to saunter over to imdb and have a discussion with a friend of mine over a virtual beer and a cup of coffee. In our discussion we went over our various points of view as far as the trailer was concerned but in the end, we were unable to come to a consensus on what had been changed on the way from Nolan's earlier movies to TDKR.

I was also curious about the black levels and white balance in some of the scenes so, while taking great care to not spoil anything for myself, I went through the trailer frame by frame (without sound) and noticed a bit of fuzziness in the picture. I have complete trust in Nolan but this is a bit worrying, I'm hoping that by the next trailer he will have cleaned up those issues. I'm afraid that instead of ignoring this small imperfection, my eyes will be unable to not notice it since I have spent so much time searing it into my memory. It won't detract from my enjoyment of the movie but it will be unfortunate if this isn't fixed. Again, I completely trust Nolan but this is a little scary.

Sometimes I feel as if I need to repeat myself and/or keep talking so this next paragraph will vaguely touch on the movie but will mostly be about another movie and whatever else I deem necessary. So, the particular brand of colors that I saw when looking at the trailer reminded me of a particular scene in Little Giants. This may not seem like the most apt comparison but look at the 1:23:37 mark and you'll see what I'm talking about. The colors are very saturated while at the same time being completely muted. This isn't the contradiction that it seems to be initially, when you put your mind to it anything is possible. For the people who have read this far I offer up my deepest condolences, for you have just been subject to utter nonsense but I felt that it was needed so that I could prove my point.

Did anyone notice the shot of the dinner table? It's looks like someone was holding a cane? Like someone was broken?!

I really hope this movie is at least 2HRs and 20 mins

Blzr, I like to think myself as an analytical person (for better or for worse), but you've pretty much upped it to another level with that post.

Anyway, from a trailer which is composed mostly of shots that are 2-3 seconds long maximum, I find it hard to determine any kind of visual theme or pinpoint a distinctive tone in the camera work (objective v. subjective). The shots that are in the trailer look amazing as is (well, hopefully the football scene looks better) and while the color scheme of this film doesn't present itself, I like what Nolan has shown us thus far. I know you're far from familiar with comic books, but there are distinct comic-book visual points being hit upon in a very artful way, but emotionally heavy way.
