Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Watched the new Conan the Barbarian last night and it was a bit of a let down. It had a few decent moments and the occasional bit of decent special effects but overall it was just a pretty forgettable film.

It seemed to have heaps of those little moments where you just know they aren't trying their hardest like he will have blood on one side of his face in one shot then he'll turn around and suddenly the blood has magically disappeared etc. Those sort of things seemed to have happened a fair bit in this movie and I normally don't even notice that sort of thing.

I really liked that main guy as Kal Drogo in Game of Thrones but I think they could have made a better choice for Conan to be honest.

    6/10 from me....

I tried watching this with my wife this past weekend. We both looked at each other after about 20 minutes and turned it off and went to bed.

Same, I was let down even though I was told to temper my expectations. Thought it would be more about female escapades in a bachelorette party type setting. I was disappointed because there were some funny moments (especially by Melissa McCarthy) that they could've built upon but didn't do it. I really like Kristen Wiig I think she's funny, but they didn't really utilize her comedic talent fully IMO.

Cars 2- Actually not that bad of a movie. Critics were making it seem like it was the worst animated movie of the year and i'm pretty sure it wasn't. For one, the action was definitely there which is sort of different for a Pixar movie. it was heavy on action and i thought the whole spy back-ground was a good add on. Yet i see where people felt a detachment to the characters. Everyone was disposal-able.

Idiocracy- I know I'm a few years late but I found it hilarious.

The Caller- Very creepy suspense thriller.

The Snow Walker- Beautiful cinematography and a great performance by Barry Pepper.

Captain America: The First Avenger- Good movie, I've been impressed with the last few Marval movies I've seen.

The Big Lebowski - It is official - this movie never gets old. The cast in this thing is perfect. John Goodman is hilarious and Jeff Bridges is legendary, but PSH is the unsung hero.

I just finally got around to watching District 9 the other day. Very good movie in my opinion. It was different from what I was expecting but still very good none the less.

I too was tricked into watching this. I thought it was supposed to be the female equivalent of the Hangover or Bachelor party. Outside of a decent food poisoning scene, there were very little hijynx or shenanigans.

I knew I was screwed when it was about an hour into the movie and they hadn't been to Vegas yet.

Thing about the story is that the main character is an absolute loser. And when the movie ended, I turned to my wife and said, you know she's still a loser. If the movie wasn't going to be funny, the main character could have at least had some story of redemption.

If you have to watch a chick flick, get.....

there was some really funny stuff in that movie.

I thought it was fairly original. There was one "you gotta be kidding me, even for this movie scene", but entertaining.

Plus, I always thought this guy might be the illegitimate offspring of one of the Marx Bros. (the least known one, Zeppo, who played a straight love interest type man in several Marx films):

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011). Highly, highly disappointed with this one as this was a remake of one of my favorite childhood TV movies. Once I saw precocious, overacting child actress Bailee Madison, I knew there was a problem. I was hoping Guy Pearce could save this one, but he is sadly just a prop in the movie. The creatures resembled more menacing mutant rats to me than the original human/beastoid things. I don't understand all of the play with the child as I remember that the original was set in the vein of tormenting the household's wife, Kim Darby. Only thing I can think is that G. del Toro has this thing about playing off children to bring suspense and fear to the audience.

This is the biggest disappointment from GDT and especially in regards that he completely missed on a remake of a TV cult classic.

Didn't see your post. Yes, it was a very enjoyable movie. The story was interesting and kept a fast pace throughout. I didn't know what to expect, but it held my interest the entire time.

Been holding back on a couple of movies I've seen recently.

                              The Lincoln Lawyer

Made this a blind buy at BBY when it was on sale for $11.99 (in fact, I believe that it still is). Matthew McConaughey is deservingly given a lot of **** with most of the garbage he puts out, but this was not only a great film, but he was a great seller in it. The first and last 15 minutes had me kind of wondering where it would go/why it went there, but the middle more than made up for those relatively lackluster ends of the film. The supporting cast was decent enough, but the script was this film's strength. There were unpredictable twists and turns that occurred left and right, and at times you were caught under McConaughey's wing with narration and mindset, and other times you were left out of the loop, which served to work really well in here. I loved it, and would recommend anybody who likes crime dramas to check it out.

                              The Lookout

What did I just say about crime dramas? Here was another decent take at one, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and holding a recognizable supporting cast with Jeff Daniels, Isla Fisher, Bruce McGill, Alex Borstein, and apparently Ozzy Osbourne as well. The pacing is consistent in its own way for the first half of the film, then transitions over to another kind of consistent pace for the second half of the film. Basically, it's drama then crime. The opening scenes instantly leave you enamored by JGL's character, and your emotions tie in with his all the way -- from his frustrations to his confusions, and everything else in between. The plot is fairly simple, but the anatomy of true human character is the bulk of the film's telling. I caught it on some local channel with commercials, and I stayed on my couch the entire time, not wanting to miss a beat. I wouldn't call the film "cool" or anything, but it was good.

                              She's the Man

At the bottom of the pit is the movie my sister recorded because it ties in with Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," something that she's reading in school. She wanted company, so there I was. It's laugh-out-loud stupid and ridiculous. It looks like Amanda Bynes has plenty of fun acting, though... I don't know why she would have ever wanted to "retire" from it, especially so young. Anyway, nothing really to say here. You've seen it once, you've seen 'em all: one dresses as the other gender, insert private area jokes, have trouble coping and remembering which role you're supposed to play, crush on someone but can't tell secret...... and we all know what happens from there. I guess as long as it keeps my sister entertained, that's good enough for me. A worthy viewing for the teenies and A.B. fanatics, I guess.

I got the Harry Potter BD collection earlier this week, so I plan on getting some of those in this weekend. I'm sure everyone and their mothers (quite literally) have already seen this entire series though, so there's not really any kind of impression I can leave that nobody hasn't already witnessed for themselves.
