Escape Plan (2013)
A nice synthesis of '80s action cliches with modern movie storytelling. I thought Stallone and Schwarzenegger were quite good especially Stallone who actually showed a bit of acting chops with facial expressions and his looking around the facility trying to figure a way out.
The movie does have a couple '80s cliches such as the "buddy" formula, vaguely foreign villain and the finale gave in to the "million bullets in a gun" cliche. One cliche that could've been used but was upended was the Javed character. He was at first your typical "bad Islamic extremist" but he soon developed into a credible and real person who you weren't quite sure where he stood. Faran Tahir was EXCELLENT in the role, so much so that I think I will have to find some other stuff he's been in. I've seen him on the new DALLAS show and thought he was quite good there so I should've known he'd be equally as good here.
Jim Caviezel was quite good as the evil warden though the connection between him and Sly's character could've been expanded upon. It really looked like Caviezel was a great student of Sly's escape proof prison plans and such. There are little bits dropped about that but it would've been nice to have an expansive scene where the two discuss it.
Everyone was uniformly good in this movie and while the plot is slightly complicated and the plot twists are predictable (except one to me)
I give this a solid *** stars.
