    Escape Plan (2013)

A nice synthesis of '80s action cliches with modern movie storytelling. I thought Stallone and Schwarzenegger were quite good especially Stallone who actually showed a bit of acting chops with facial expressions and his looking around the facility trying to figure a way out.

The movie does have a couple '80s cliches such as the "buddy" formula, vaguely foreign villain and the finale gave in to the "million bullets in a gun" cliche. One cliche that could've been used but was upended was the Javed character. He was at first your typical "bad Islamic extremist" but he soon developed into a credible and real person who you weren't quite sure where he stood. Faran Tahir was EXCELLENT in the role, so much so that I think I will have to find some other stuff he's been in. I've seen him on the new DALLAS show and thought he was quite good there so I should've known he'd be equally as good here.

Jim Caviezel was quite good as the evil warden though the connection between him and Sly's character could've been expanded upon. It really looked like Caviezel was a great student of Sly's escape proof prison plans and such. There are little bits dropped about that but it would've been nice to have an expansive scene where the two discuss it.

Everyone was uniformly good in this movie and while the plot is slightly complicated and the plot twists are predictable (except one to me)
    Spoiler
it's still a highly enjoyable movie. This movie doesn't drag at all and while the action is heavily slanted towards the end of the film I didn't mind it because I understood this to be a blending of the prison flick genre with the action movie genre.

    I give this a solid *** stars.

Blitz with Jason Statham. I was tempted to put the subtitles on. Decent movie nothing great but a bit of action.

The Treasure of Pancho Villa (1955)

As I said a couple weeks ago this movie was ahead of its time. The look and feel of this Western is comparable to that of The Wild Bunch or early Spaghetti Westerns. Rory Calhoun gets top billing in this but really it's Gilbert Roland's film as the revolutionary colonel Juan Castro serving Pancho Villa and transporting the gold. Shelley Winters plays a somewhat cuckoo American school teacher who wants to very much be a part of the revolution but hates Calhoun's guts as he's a mercenary working with Castro. She castigates him for profiting from revolution yet she's the crazy one willing to put her life on the line for a cause that she doesn't fully understand.

I flesh things out in my blog but if you're a fan of The Wild Bunch or Westerns of that ilk you'll love this one. I give this **** stars.

The Lego Movie: One of the funniest, most surprising and more meaningful animated films I've ever seen.

Lord and Miller are now 3 for 3 in terms of feature films. With Legos, they continue their streak of telling irrelevant charming stories with a ton of energy and heart, using familiar tropes but lampooning them as they go without ever coming across as smug (a tricky line they continue to walk with great skill). It's also a great love letter to the creative spirit of anyone who has ever had a creative moment.

The only nitpick I could possibly have towards this movie is that it felt almost too fast and manic the first time seeing it. It just moves moves moves to a point where it might hurt the story, but since it's working with such well worn tropes, it was never a real problem for me. And it does slow down a bit when it really matters.

              Thor Dark World.

I thought it was pretty good, it was a nice change in the fact that it definitely felt like a comic book movie with all the different worlds, etc.

LOVE both of the Thor films. Hiddleston's Loki is such a great character, would love for him to get his own set of movies, or a prequel to Thor...anything.

Chris has done an amazing job bringing Thor to life as well; we can all admit that this was probably the EASIEST major Marvel hero to screw up with a bad performance. He does it with humor, grace, a bit of edge, and wink, and some warmth to offset his 'godness' and grander dialog styling.

We watched 'The Wolverine' last night. Very enjoyable, and a great sequel to Xmen: The Last Stand.....allllthough.......

                        Silver Linings Playbook.

Obviously, I had heard great things about it. But I wasn't sure it'd be my type of movie. But I love it. Lawrence, Cooper and De Niro were all great.

The funny thing is, I looked up the scores from that season and they were all correct in the movie, except for that one game.

Twister - Its ridiculous how many people I recognized in the cast from TV shows and other films. That was almost as big of a distraction than the dialogue. Not to mention how I always confuse Bill Paxton for a Quaid or exactly how white Helen Hunt's shirt stayed until the very end water-pipe burst. Despite all the distractions it is still an insanely fun ride for a low-brow romance story that was written by the most obvious and efficient writers ever. The effects still hold up surprisingly well and the soundtrack is still a treat for surround sound.
