Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Bad Day At Black Rock was pretty good, especially the loutish behavior of Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin. Five Oscar winners are in this film including multiple winners Spencer Tracy and Walter Brennan. Definitely different for it's time.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I had pretty low expectations. I figured there'd be some good scenes because I'm a fan of both Shepherd and Pena, and some nice boobs to look at. It had both of those and more. I won't see it again in the theater, but I could see it being one of those movies that whenever it's on TV, I'll watch it no matter what part it's at.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
I saw Life on a few days ago. I liked it a lot. The creature is pretty damn cool and CGI is well done. Jake G. (I forget how to spell his name) is his usual stellar self and the whole cast does great. It's a small cast, obviously, but they do well.
I agree with what a lot of people have said. It really isn't super original and kind of feels like an even mix of three or four other very popular Sci-Fi movies. One thing I did think was cool is that this is the first movie like this that I can think of where it isn't super-futuristic tech. This takes place on the ISS and it's modern day astronautics. I guess in that sense it is kind of like "Gravity" (in a sense?) as far as dealing with an extremely dangerous situation out in space with just our current technology/knowledge/capabilities.
I guess some people have different thoughts about the themes or the message, or whatever, regarding the concept of what "life" need to do in order to thrive, or the dangers of discovering new life. I dunno. I just liked the film. I like the whole "claustrophobic space horror" thing that made Alien so awesome.
I do have one major gripe. It isn't about the film itself. I tried to write it in a way that wouldn't spoil anything, but couldn't, and if I had posted it as is, without a tag, I would have been a hyprocite doing what I am slamming other people for doing.
So fair warning: dont click the spoiler if you dont want the movie ruined. Also, this is a pretty lame rant, I admit
Spoiler
I ****ing hate when people spoil things with anti-spoilers. Meaning, in this movie's case, every single site or tweet or anything was all about "OMG THE TWIST ENDING" "LETS TALK ABOUT THAT SHOCKING ENDING" "OMG THE SPOILER IS INSANE" that kind of thing. In a movie like this, you ruin the twist by saying this, because this isn't like an M. Night movie, or some deep multi-layered drama where anything could happen. When it comes time for what happens, to happen, there are literally only TWO options. There's one capsule, and there's another capsule. That's it. There is literally noooottthhhhiiinnnnggggg else that could have happened, so when every single public reaction was OMG CRAZYYYYY TWIST ENDING BROS GO SEE IT, of course we are gonna know what happens when it gets to that point. Nobody would have freaked out if she landed safely and he saved the world by trapping himself and the creature in spafe
Don't do that. Consider the specific material you are referencing if you say things like "wow you're not gonna believe the ending." If it is a movie where a lot of things could happen, that's fine. In this case, it is clear as day that there is only one of two possible outcomes and knowing that the ending is "Crazy" makes anyone automatically assume its gonna be the "Crazier Option" in the end.
Edit: This rant is directed at news/media/pop culture sites, not any posters here. What I described in the spoiler is related to social media headlines and website articles, not forum posts.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Saw The Searchers (1955) for the first time on Amazon Instant and was super impressed by the stunning landscape and the remastering of this classic. I would assume it would look even better on Blu-ray. Hard hitting no apologies western, but given the reviews I thought I would like it a little better.

Man I'm hearing pretty good things about Ghost In The Shell. Everyone seems to agree that the film is at least visually stunning

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Patriots Day. I'm surprised it came out this quickly. I think the movie got smashed around here, but I didn't think it was that bad. It was interesting to see how they depicted the operational doings to find these guys. The integration with real events was a bit odd, but I understand why they did it. It's more of a tribute movie. It certainly can lead to political discussions as well but of course won't get into that here.Comment

The Magnificent 7
I thought it was was great. Funny, great action and loved all 7 of the heroes. Denzel, Pratt and D'Nofrio were my personal favorites.
D'Nofrio really transformed, great actor

D'Nofrio was definitely my fave character in this. Was just too little of him, but what he said on the porch was profound.Comment

Self-Less
Starring Ryan Reynolds.
I really liked it and so did my wife. I really like character-driven sci-fi anyway. Sure there are some moments where you question why someone is doing something, but overall I found it to be a very good little flick! cool concept, executed well.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Passengers
Maybe I'm just a Chris Pratt fan but i liked this one too. Jennifer Lawrence never looked better and thought she did well.
I'm a sucker for future technology in movies and enjoyed all the concepts.
Kinda hope they can do more stories with Homestead and going to a new planet.

The Nice Guys. It was pretty good, say a 7 out of 10.
Re: Patriot Day. I will never watch that movie because I am sick of the whole rah-rah genre, perfectly encapsulated by Wahlberg's line in the trailer: "They just messed with the wrong city!"
Which city, pray tell, would have been the right city? Toledo? So freaking stupid.
