Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
The Mechanic:
I enjoyed it for what it is, an action movie and seeing Jason Staham kill bad guy after bad guy. Staham and Ben Foster had good chemistry and turned in good performances. I can't think of a dull moment in this movie. The movie did feel short though, we watched the 7:40 pm and were out of the movies by 9:15 and that included approximately 10 minutes of preview. But the movie did not drag at all or have too many sub-plots.
The Social Network:
I thought it was interesting to see the behind the scenes of how Facebook was created and all the drama that occurred after. I never knew about the settlement or Facebook going to court. And it's amazing to see how it grew so fast, going from Havard to worldwide. Jesse Eisenberg had a great performance and the dialogue was entertaining throughout. I also liked Timberlake, and think he is a good actor, I liked him in Alpha Dog also.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
I see you can get all 4 of them for 36 bucks on Amazon. Might have to pull the trigger on that when I get some extra cash. The only one I own right now is the first one, but I definitely want to own the next 2. And the way you're making it sound, I'll definitely want to own the 4th as well.
I've been robbed of high def audio for 2 and 3 (watched one on TV, the other on DVD) and I know for damn sure I want to feel and hear the lossless version of the 2 plane explosions in Die Hard 2 and the helicopter crash in DH3.
And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Die Hard 2 has lossless audio. It says it does, but my receiver doesn't seem to decode it as such. I was explaining the movie to a friend and she guessed who it was without even seeing it. I still enjoyed the movie.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

No Strings Attached
My wife dragged me to the theater to see this one. She complains that every time we go to the theater, it's to see either an action or horror movie. Honestly, it was pretty good. Natalie Portman is always great (and very easy on the eyes), and there was some pretty witty dialogue going on. I'm just glad it didn't follow EVERY cliche of chick flicks, although the ending is exactly what you think it would be.
Also, Dayman, I don't think you'll be disappointed with Live Free or Die Hard. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Olyphant was a very good villian, and Bruce was great as always. Throw in some great action scenes, and you've got a what I thought was a great action movie.Comment

Faster-9.0
What an excellent movie. A very generic movie with a great cast to pull it off. The rock needs to stay on this path making movies like this, not The Gameplan etc. The plot has him going after the people who killed his brother. The best thing is that he hardly talks, he just gets the job done and the fact that he put on more weight for this movie, he looks like a BADASS
Can't wait to see him n Fast FiveComment

Live Free or Die Hard is one of the better looking/sounding action movies on Blu-ray anyway, so you're probably going to want to pick it up for that reason alone.
And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Die Hard 2 has lossless audio. It says it does, but my receiver doesn't seem to decode it as such. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
Die Harder arrives on Blu-ray with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track that sounds about average for an action film of its 1990 vintage. Meaning, the effects are kind of clunky, stocky, and artificial, directionality lacks subtlety, and the track's mid-range sounds slightly hollow. Real speaker usage is frequent but not entirely convincing. Airport ambience seems canned, movements through the surround channels are heavy handed, and machine gun blasts feel as if they were selected from a sound effects library and simply dropped into the track with little concern for acoustics. When Michael Kamen's score kicks into high gear and the action scenes really ramp up, some of this artificiality is lost in the sheer amount of sound, but it's always there if you listen closely. The track's low-end is adequate, but the two or three massive explosions in the film, which should rattle the picture frames on your walls, seem to lack any real heft or presence. Overall, the sound is suitable but it doesn't really bring anything new to the experience of watching the film—not that that's necessarily a bad thing.
Do note that some viewers have reported problems with their players being unable to decode the DTS-HD Master Audio track and forcing the Dolby Digital mix instead. For the record, I had no problems on my PS3 with up-to-date firmware.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Yeah, well my old receiver did passthrough which decoded it to LPCM, but I didn't believe that it was giving me lossless. It didn't sound so great anyway, but it's an old movie so I can't hark on it too much.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
I know, but Nolan spliced in many subtle things for Inception (which I posted in the thread) that cause many things to be debatable, all because of the ending of course. I would only call Memento linear in that the end appears pretty clear-cut to me. I see people arguing the other way but I'm not quite understanding how that argument really holds up well at all.
I'm not trying to outright compare these films because the ultimate puzzle of each are very different psychological monsters and both have different layers. For me, Memento is more thought-provoking and has more depth. With that said, Inception is probably easier to watch, but I feel more rewarded watching Memento and putting all the pieces together (and usually in different places).

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Right, but Memento has just as many (probably more) subtle clues and red herrings as Inception does. Throughout Memento there is doubt not only for the narrator (Leonard), but the actions as well. There are multiple running levels and themes throughout that simply cannot be processed, much less picked up on after the first or even second viewing. While the ending is a great revelation (basically the opposite of Inception dropping its hammer on your head) , I don't think it comes close to completely solving all the puzzles of the film.

Faster. Very cool action flick. Reminded me a lot of Taken. Very little dialogue but just enough to keep the blood bath going.
The Rock needs to keep taking roles like this one.Comment
