127 Hours... good movie. Well done considering what the movie was based on. I imagine it was quite a challenge finding ways to keep the viewer interested, but I was interested throughout.

Yep. I went to see this at the $2 theater....ended up walking out. Not the worst I've ever seen but it bored me to tears.

I just watched The Greek Tycoon (1978) (though IMDB seems to have the runtime wrong as the copy I watched was nearly 2 hrs)

Now, I only watched this movie for Anthony Quinn who was one of the more underrated actors of legendary status. This is probably due to the fact that had to first put up with ethnic roles early in his career and the varying quality of films in his later career. This was not one of the better movies however his great acting and personal magnetism made the movie very watchable.

It was a stroke of genius getting Quinn in this role as written this role could've been way over acted. The movie is the most thinly veiled fictionalization of the Aristotle Onassis/Jackie Kennedy relationship and marriage. It's a very paper thin film so the acting of Quinn kept it afloat. His character Theo Tomasis is rich beyond words, a bit of a mysoginist (sp) and a boar at times however he has some principles as well especially when it comes to his son Nico who he values above anyone else. He also has a strange notion of marriage with his first wife. He truly loves her but prefers the attention of another woman.

The rest of the actors do a passable job and I must say Jacqueline Bissett was pretty damn sexy back in the day! Anyways, this isn't really recommended for the film itself but if you want to see an actor take very average material and make it worth seeing than by all means see it if you ever come across it on TV or whatever.

Awesome movie. I'm not sure why they took so long to release the film when they had it done for several years now. The movie was pretty good. Sort of suspenseful as well as action packed. Just when i thought Nic Cage had lost it completely this movie has redeemed it by .01

Really? I thought the trailer for that looked terrible, and doing a quick scan of the interweb's reviews...you seem to be the first person to people "Awesome movie" after your review.

What was actually good about it?

And I don't mean for this to sound like a "you couldn't like that movie" kinda post. I'm sure I own a couple of movies that most people/reviewers hate, just kinda wondering why this one got such a high rating from you.

I went in there with pretty low expectations. I like suspense movies and the idea behind this one was sort of interesting, sort of like fantasy movies etc.

Now about the movie itself, Cage did a good job carrying his character and Ron Pearlman is a win in anything he does. The whole concept of getting "the witch" to the monks was very plain and simple but the trip there was entertaining.

I guess your right in a way, there was nothing EXCEPTIONALLY good about the movie, but it was a fun watch. Sort of short but it kept me entertained more than i thought it would.

Awesome movie. I know everyone raved about it, but i wasn't interested at it at the time. Watching it tonight, it was definitely awesome. Movies that makes you laugh, cry, scream etc etc.

Watched this about a week ago and I agree. Not enough action for me, and the intertwining of some of the characters was a little hard to follow so I lost interest less than half way through.

Also I saw Green Zone a while back and I thought it was OK. Nothing special but I like those kind of movies so it was tolerable for me. I felt it had a similar sort of feel as The Kingdom. But there was a lot of behind the scenes political jokeying between government officials over the whole WMD issue and the governing of Iraq, which made it a little more interesting, to me at least.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

For movies made within the last 5 years I won't bother with long arse rambling but anyways.....

Unstoppable (2010) Not a bad movie at all really. In fact, I think Tony Scott did a great job with this as he took a more low key approach to this than he usually does with his movies. The real credit has to go to screenwriter Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard) for taking a very understated approach in writing the material. You really get the sense that regular every day people can be heroes in this world. It's not like your typical action movie where the hero is some bombastic guy who KNOWS he'll solve whatever problems he's presented with.

Denzel Washington gives one of his better "man of the people" type of performances and Chris Pine does well working off of him as well. The tension built up between the both of them (Denzel on 3 weeks notice before forced retirement and Pine this young guy who represents all young guys taking over from the older folks) is paid off richly when the crap hits the fan and they have to work together. They form a bond and mutual respect in a very honest and realistic way unlike most "buddy flicks".

Rosario Dawson also does a pretty good job in a role that's a bit against type for her. She doesn't have to do too much other than trying to figure things out and getting PO'ed at the way the train company is handling things but she manages to be likable enough.

The last 20 or so minutes of the movie is really intense and had me on the edge of my seat even though I knew the end result already. In short, Unstoppable was a mishmash of '70s style disaster flick, buddy film and actioneer. One other thing to note is that the runaway train isn't JUST a train but the multiple failed attempts to stop it actually make said train a character in the movie as well.

So I give this a hearty recommendation.

                          Just got back from Paul.

It was pretty funny but I expected better out of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. There are some really funny moments but most of the jokes/remarks are a little obvious and not really that funny. It also kind of bludgeons you over the head with the anti-religious stuff. I'm definitely not all hardcore religious or anything but the broad mocking gets really old IMO. I'm not much for getting preached to one way or the other in a generally low-brow comedy.

I'd say it's worth seeing compared to the other comedies that have been released lately.

That's disappointing to hear about the anti-religious stuff. Comedy CAN have an agenda and point the viewer to a way of thinking but if it's pro or anti anything it needs to be a bit more subtle about it. I'm sorry to hear that they went overboard with things.

I'll still catch this at some point though.

The Green Hornet. Are you kidding me? Who's idea was this? An absolute crapfest mainly chalked up to Seth Rogan and some pretty bad writing. This could have been incredibly better as the dude who played Kato would have worked in other conditions.

Ong Bak 2. Much better production value than 1, but dubbed is not the way to go. I'd rather read subtitles and have the more authentic sounding voices. The ending left a lot to be desired, but overall better storyline and, of course, Tony Jaa's moves are just ridiculous. Begs the Bruce Lee vs. Tony Jaa hypothetical question battle.
